View Full Version : Hmm...next car should be...

Man...I'm in serious debate over what I want my next car to be... Lookin' for some outside thoughts and opinions.

Ok, I know...it's the EF Squad. We're biased. "Keep the hatch!" "Get a CRx!"

No...not looking at that option. I want something that when I come home, or whenever I go driving, I don't have to worry about things breaking, dying, etc etc. I'm looking for something "sporty and fun" that I can take up to the mountains now and then, and have a good time, but is still comfortable to drive, and looks good enough to pick up the ladies... Also, it'd be nice to do a LITTLE bit of modding to...but nothing major.

Some of the main ones I've been lookin' at are...

1. 350z (Probably 2004 or newer)
2. 3-series (Probably like 98-03)
3. RX7 (93+)
4. Ram (04+)
5. IS300
6. G8 (coming out this year)
7. Charger (the new model...with the Hemi)
8. 300 (one of the newer ones...with the hemi :D )
9. GTO (The new one...04+)
10. Supra (the latest model)

I think that covers most that I've considered...?

with your list id say no to most of them except for the bmw 3 series you cant go wrong with twin turbo and it will def pick up the ladies, 350z a bit too small for me if you plan on being single for a long time then pick up the supra a big no to the rx7 i just havent met too many happy rotary owners as they tend to break down more than your everyday honda

why not be different and get that vette you want save the extra dough from not paying a car note and hook it up real nice

The vette I've been wanting is the old C3's. They're maintenance-happy because of their age, and it costs a buttload to restore one, anymore. And it takes time and patience. I won't have that while I'm with the military. I'll build one (if I can) when I come back home...

I agree with the Rx7. I REALLY like the bodies, though. But...rotary's are a paint to maintain (so I've heard) and I am DEFINITELY looking for less maintenance. As for the supra...yet again, beautiful car, but I think they're maintenance happy.

I think the biggest disagreements I've had with myself on the issue is the 3series, Z, and GTO.

I REALLY like the 300 and Charger with the exception of their gauges. 4 doors of glory helps insurance, they're safe, and have enough power to get around...but they're not exactly gas-friendly, either...

Oh, and the RAM is just cuz I miss having a truck...

...oh I won't? :D Whatever you say, cupcake... But both of those have overly stiff suspension and are a LITTLE more "sporty" than I'm looking for, I think...

uhmmm.... thats two seperate generations.
Are they, now... I'm still learning my bimmer generations, bare with me...but do please inform me.

All I know is the model that was around in 95 (again, bare with me...was it 95-98?) looks good when they've got the ground works. And then the model that was...I wanna say 00 (give or take) to like 02? I think it's 03 that has the tail lights that are kinda rounded off and un-BMW-like that I don't like...

BMW guy...throw me the generations or a site, please...it'll be greatfully helpful. But I DO know I love AC Schnitzer...and I also know it's $$$in the bank.

The E36 3 series ran from 1992 - 1999, iirc. This will encompass the 318i, 318is, 325i, 325is, 328i, 328is, 323i, 323is, and M3 there was a M3 4 door for a couple of years in there, too. The E46 was the next generation of 3-series after the E36. The current models are E90s.

Check out http://www.bimmerforums.com for more Bimmer goodness.

I like the E36 chassis cars personally. Probably the best all around chassis without losing too much of the BMW character. Depending on your price range, E36s can be found from $2500 all the way to $25,000+. M3s are included in that price assessment but typically start at about $14,000 and go up.

E36 M3. awesome car.

get a new miata. as dumb as it sounds, an MX-5 MER with little work can be faster than a lot of sports cars out. and no one has one built yet...that ive seen around here.

C5 Z06. period

new GT-R. have fun with payments...

EvasiveEF9

GT-R - Thought about it. Expensive as hell.

Miata - I just can't get myself interested in the bodies... I've seen them run and they are FAR impressive...I just...can't get interested.

C5 Z06 - I'd kill myself, LoL. naw...I just don't know that I can afford it, but funny ou mention it. I was thinking about a vette earlier today...

Charger or a good FC. :goodjob:

The Charger, Supra, and GTO are just too heavy, imo.

The only caveat that I offer about the E36 M3 is that the suspension design is so good that it can actually mask driving mistakes. Or said another way, it's a very easy car to drive fast.

I've been pretty impressed with the C5 Z06s at the track. Gobs and gobs of power and can be driven daily without a problem. I've heard of Z06s in the $20,000 range, so depending on your price range, Ben, it might not be impossible.

Wanted to bring this thread back up after I've been doing some research...

After some research and serious thinking, I've added a couple cars to the list, and taken a few off... I figure my justifications for adding and removing some vehicles may help ya'll throw out more advice and thoughts...

The original list (excluding cars eliminated)
2. 3-series (Probably like 98-03)
5. IS300
7. Charger (the new model...with the Hemi)
8. 300 (one of the newer ones...with the hemi)

To be removed from the list, and reasons why...
1. 350z - It's a two-door, so it's high on insurance...which I CAN deal with, but the trunkspace is limited, and the rear seat only tops off the "I don't like about it" list. I think it's a bit more sporty than I'm looking for as far as something to look good and comfortably get me around town (or interstate travel to see people). Maybe one day for a midlife crises car or something... When my insurance won't suck for driving a 2door, either.
3. RX7 - They're older cars, and I would want the latest one...the FD (if I remember right). Due to their limited availability...it might be rather difficult to find parts...and even if I can find them NOW...I might not be able to in a few years... Again, we face the 2door vehicle problem...
4. Ram - Gas prices are on the rise...and show no signs of stopping. If I get another truck, I want it to be a 4x4...which doesn't help. With insurance OR gas. Not to mention...as loyal as I am to Dodge and their trucks...their cars aren't good for much over 100K miles...
6. G8 - Pontiac, lately, has NOT impressed me with their cars. Powerful, perhaps...but damn if everyone I know with a newer pontiac doesn't keep having problems with them... Granted, they're the G6, and most everything has been covered by warranty...it's not saying much for the company.
9. GTO - Pontiac made. As powerful as these cars are, and as much as I've loved every single one I've toyed with...I queery their warranty and reliability because of the high-maintenance I've seen on the G6...
10. Supra - Granted, it's a beautiful car...we're again looking at a 2door with limited to no back seat. Trunk space, yet again, would be an issue in addition to the limited rear seating area. Again, it's an older car that seems like it would soonly be harder to find parts for it...

2. 3-series (Probably like 98-03)
5. IS300
7. Charger (the new model...with the Hemi)
8. 300 (one of the newer ones...with the hemi)

Added cars to include
11. Toyota Tacoma (new model)
12. Toyota Tundra (new model)
13. Altima SE-R
14. G35

To summarize...the BMW 3-series is still in the loop. I really like the cars and thus far seems to be offering me everything I'd want. I'll be able to tell more on the IS300 when i get to take one out for a spin.

Uh...think that's about it for now...just...kinda thinking out loud...
