ok I been reading up on th ebenefits of using a synthetic oil, while i was researching i read about a lawsiut that mobil 1 lost, apparently its not a full synthetic. Im not sure about castrol syntec either. royal purple on the other hand is fully synthetic, and so is lucas racing. but for some reason im not a big fan of royal purple, one its purple oil (why?), second how come car manufacturers never service higher performance cars with royal purple. I know lancer evos require mobil 1. anyway just wondering what you guys know about this.

I had not heard about Mobil 1 not being fully synthetic. But what I can say is that the 4 or 5 vehicles we have run with only Mobil 1 haven't given us any sign of engine wear and it seems to make a difference in the life of the vehicle. Regardless of how "synthetic" it may be, I am sold on Mobil 1 and will put nothing less in my vehicles.

all the way. i went to a oil test thing at a performance shop in chattanooga tn.and you could bring your own oil i brought mobil 1 15-50and it was out performed by far. they had this load bearing test unit where you press down on the lever yourself and put pressure on the bearings with your choice of oil. this unit simulated a bottom end.the cheaper oils autozone,wal-mart,havoline,valvoline,pennzol,would start smoking the bearings would start screaming when pressure was applied almost instant and if you pushed hard you could stop the rotation, royal purple, redline, lasted longer but failed mobil1 lasted longer started smoking then screaming from bearing to metal but the kept running no matter how much pressure no smoke no screaming and you could not stop the rotation..the oil is good for 7500 mile before change and about 4 bucks a q.can only buy it online or from a Schaeffer's dealer

I don't know what SPECIFIC oil you're referring to, as Mobil 1 has always had a full Group 4 based full synthetic oil. I don't know how they could have lost a lawsuit over being full synthetic when from the beginning they had some of the best base-stock of oil in the business. They're not THE best oil around, but they have always had good stuff. Castrol Syntec is not Group 4 at all, it is actually a Group 3 mix with a Group 4 style additive package. I have not seen any lawsuit about Mobil 1's stuff, but I have seen the chemical breakdown of the Mobil 1 I put in the A4. It's full synthetic, Group 4 basestock and all. I'd also recommend Penzoil Platinum, it's also fully Group 4, and has the best Euro Blend in the business as far as I'm concerned, I just can't ever seem to find it to put it in, nobody carries 5-40 anywhere near my house apparently except Mobil. Wish I could get some ELF, now that is HIGH quality oil, but I don't feel like ordering by the 6 quart case every few months. Anyone know anywhere that sells ELF?
Oh, and for what it's worth: Peanut oil, though some people are allergic.

For those that have asked, 5w40 is available in full synthetic from Valvoline. I use it.....since I get it for free....;) :D
As long as you keep up with regular changes as you're supposed to, it really won't make that huge a difference in most street applications. If you have an FI car or highly modded NA, it is probably more crucial though.

more info:
synthetic oils were considered to be of a Group IV or V base stock (non-mineral stock) but in 1997 Castrol highly refined a mineral oil (this is called Group III, hydrocracked) and called it a synthetic, claiming that hydrocracked oil resembles nothing found in nature. ln response Exxon Mobil filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. The NAD decided that the evidence "constitutes a reasonable basis for the claim that Castrol Syntec, as currently formulated, is a synthetic motor oil". So Group III oils have been termed "full synthetics" for quite some time in the US. Keep in mind that Group III oils can not be called synthetic in Europe. Here is a good post I found on that oil forum: "I have known for a fact Mobil 1 has been mostly group III basestock as far back as NOV. 2004. And YES this includes the regular Mobil 1 and the EP formula also. Now I know people will ask who I work for, sorry I cant let that out, I have four mouths to feed and I wont jeopardize that. Let (me) make this clear I am not a Mobil hater and they are doing nothing illegal, thanks to Castrol group III is termed a full synthetic."
Now that being said, the man who actually analyzed and blew the whistle on the M1 formulation had this to say: "Using Group III is a smart move for a business and not really a betrayal. Oil companies are not selling a formula, they are selling a performance level, and are free to change the formulation anytime they please so long as their claims match the performance level they are selling. To my knowledge EM (Exxon Mobil) has never claimed that their synthetic oils have no Group III (I think many would disagree on this point), only that they are based on “synthetic” base oils including PAOs (Group IV). It would be foolish for a company to take such a definitive stand against a class of chemistry as it closes the door forever on them changing their minds or responding to market trends. The purists have inferred from their statements that they would never use a Group III, perhaps because they wanted to believe it, but EM did nothing wrong in my humble opinion. As for the price, value is determined by each buyer. I am willing to pay more for M1, not because of its composition, but because I respect their history, quality, and reputation. There is value in that name that I will shell out a few more bucks for, just as many people continue to buy the Castrol Group III synthetics."
The current formulation of Mobil 1 is a blend of Group III, IV and V base stocks. It is unclear whether or not this current formulation is superior or inferior to any previous formulations but what is clear is that the use of Group III base stock in Mobil 1 reduces cost. However, as we all know, there has been no reduction in the retail prices to reflect this... shocker.

I used mobil 1 once, and won't use it again. I put it in one of my vehicles switching from castrol, and noticed that the more and harder I drove the car, the less oil pressure it would have when it was hot. The oil started to foam up when this was happening, which is why it had the loss of oil pressure. Changed that **** a week later, and went back to castrol gtx with no problems.
In my race cars, I use the valvoline non synthetic racing oil with the lucas. I put royal purple in my cobra. And my regular drive around cars get castrol gtx.

I'm really curious, not trying to bust anyone's balls about it. Just curious. :goodjob:Mobil was the first company to file the lawsuit against Castrol. Castol called their Syntec fully synthetic when it was really a Group III & Group IV blend, instead of 100% synthetic polyaphaolefins (PAO's) it was a mix of Group IV POA's and Group III base stocks (crude). Mobil lost the lawsuit against them because the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus ruled that Castrol could still market its oil as "synthetic" because their mix has similiar properties and qualities of a true Group IV synthetic.
At the time Mobil 1 was one of the few true full synthetics then shortly after they began doing the group III/Group IV mix...but the name and price remained the same. As far as I know Mobil 1 has not made a true Group IV fully synthetic 100% PAO oil in 5 years or more.

Mobil 1 is trash. I hear the high mileage M1 is a lot better than the normal stuff but I wont ever use it again. Royal Purple is what was in my car when I spun a bearing, so again I would stay away from it; it breaks down very quickly, I've read too many oil analyses of 5w30 Royal Purple breaking down to 20wt sheer strength over time.
Redline is good but pricy and is not a full synthetic. Motul makes good oil too. Personally I'm running German Castrol 0w30 and my car seems a lot happier than with the Redline 10w40, especially on cold starts. I've got a couple friends running Shell Rotella T 5w40 with great success, its cheap, fully synthetic, and made for diesel motors so it lasts forever under strenuous conditions.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ has good forums for researching other oils.
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ offers oil analysis so you can see how well your oil is holding up, as well as what other contaminants have made it into your used oil.

Castrol GTX is what I've run in other cars, I just feel that the extra wear and tear on oil caused by a turbo motor warrants a synthetic. Get your oil tested at blackstone and they'll tell you how long it should last, most synthetics will last upwards of 7K miles according to their analysis results.

you guys do realize the reason you change your oil isn't because the oil breaks down after 3-5k right? yes synthetics last longer. but the reason for oil changes is because of the carbon contamination due to the combustion process getting into the oil. hence why oil gets darker. synthetics and fossil oils alike suffer this same fate.. so those of you who run synthetics to extend your oil change intervals may actually be doing more harm than good.

Great point to mention that. If any of ya'll do decide to go longer between oil changes, make sure that royal purple isn't in your crank case. I personally think that it's highly overpriced. I found out that Shell Rotella has zinc in it and I was convinced that (well after my buddy ran it in his turbo car without any problems) it would do well in my vehicles. Yep, thats why I keep advocating getting your oil analyzed. Not only will it tell you what the actual viscosity of the oil is but it will also tell you the flash point as well as what trace metals or chemicals are in your oil. It costs $22.50 but is worth so much more than that.
