View Full Version : Power Mods Lsvtec not making power as expected

I just finished my lsvtec and got it tuned and it is not putting out as much power as i expected.
I used a 1997 b18c1 head with about 100000 miles
I used a 1991 b18a1 block with about 200000 miles
crower 402a cams
pr3 pistons
stock ls rods with arp rod bolts
dc headers
no cat, but has a temporary bendy pipe
two and a quarter inch pipe crush bent all the way back

the car dynoed at 156 hp and 135 tq
I was expecting the hp to be much closer to 200 hp.

Any help or advice?

did replace all bottom end gaskets?
new rings w/ psitons? who set them? are they set correctly (clearances)
what do u have timing set at?

change the cams, and a better exhaust system made or bought, preferbably 2.5 inch instead, where do you rev too? hope at least 8, Itr cams would be better, is it a stock intake manifold?

Wrong answer. He needs to make sure the basic build is dialed in before he throws more money at it. There are B16s that lay down this power w/ minimal mods... he needs to hold off on that for now.

youre nowhere NEAR 200whp with that build. youll be lucky if you make 170whp.

156whp is about right for that setup, its nothing special just an OEM internals lsvtec. dont expect big numbers. your making great TQ and about stock GSR whp numbers. which is about right.

Some things that stand out are:
2.25 in exhaust, thats killing you, do a MANDREL BENT 2.5in exhaust. Either get a Thermal or Skunk2 "R" exhaust.

DC Header- Garbage, the worst of the best headers. if this is the USDM version, you might as well run a stock header. Pick up one of my Hytech/Rages for 7-10whp gain

What intake manifold? if its stock, then youll need an AEBS or Skunk2/Blox

But yeah hate to burst your bubble but thats not a 200whp build, not even close.

^^ You think he should dyno at 156whp Mike?? That seems low to me. * shrugs *

with a 2.25 in exhaust, stock intake manifold, USDM DC Header, sure absolutely.

those cams arent that great either, never been impressed with crower VTEC cams

Right on, I think I am keying in on the HP too much - and not theTQ #. Makes sense. Well - you REMEMBER my "new 3 piece crower cams" thread - since then Crower can kiss my ass. (Crower, not BC). You don't get 2 chances to f.uck up my motors... LOL

Here is the graph. You can see that it wants to make power because it ramps up nicely after vtec but then flattens off at the topend. You normally don't see long flat spots in a Honda all motor graph unless the motor is having problems breathing. With the higher compression you need to be able to flow more air in and out. Like Mike said the DC header with a 2in collector is killing it along with the exhaust. I would do a compression test also to make sure everything sealed up good on the build. Finally 200whp all motor in GA is hard to do esp with stock parts. Later.

I still think a compression check is in order. And as usual, I appreciate the education from you guys anytime I can get it. + a million

TQ numbers are pretty good but yeah HP seems about right to me. I only made 168.51 WHP/123 TQ when I dynoed last month.

they all said it.

your running out of air up top you can look at the graph those cams are somewhat comparable to skunk stg 2's and should be making power up to atleast 8500rpm before it starts to fall off. start with header and exhaust then go with a intake manifold bigger throttle body and tune from there it should pick up some power after that.
it should make mid 170's with a good tune

BORE IT OUT! make it a 2.0 or 2.1

and i take it you got it tuned at mainstream? since they are showing your run... what a waste of money

u should spray, but get tuned with it.

that would be a temporary fix. I would go with at least a jdm 4-1 dc and a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust. those cams you have are not that bad and I def. would not swap them out for ITR cams. and even after you do this and an IM/ TB you still should not expect more than 180whp

LOL, I make that (hp wise) with my b16

want more power
-get better cams
-upgrade your valvetrain to rev higher
-increase your air flow (better manifold, larger bore tb, larger diameter intake)
-open up your exhaust (replica hytec header with a 2.5in exhaust should do the job)
that should help
