I am thinking about buying a comp to use for Internet, photoshop, music, and movies. However I am not computer literate so I was thinking about buying this:
AMD 4000+ X2
4gb OCZ Ram
1x 750gb HDD SATAII
1x black Samsung DVD+/-RW with Lightsrcibe...
Win. MCE 2005 with COA
Microsoft Office Pro. 2007
Asus mATX with HDMI Port.
All in a nice green gaming case with clear side window
also comes with matching Keyboard & Mouse...
Its being built by someone on the boards and I just want second opinions. ^_^

drop the 4 gigs down to 2. 4 is not all that necessary right now and you can always upgrade later. Try to go with Vista if you can. Is that a prebuilt rig or did you put together the components yourself?

seems like a solid computer...4gb of ram is too much, but its never to bad to have more....make sure you created a backup partition on that hd so you can backup your photoshop session files like i do.....
oh...and stay with xp (xp pro FTW) if you want your programs to work well....i installed vista and took it out the same day...

unless your going x64 O/S don't bother with 4gb of ram. The Windows won't see all of it and it's useless. Also I would get a better CPU then the 4000+ but thats just me. It's not a bad one, but I would get something better. Also Vista is where everything is moving, I don't like it that much, but I'm running ultimate x64, but I dual boot with XP pro as well. Office 07 is awesome.
My Xp pro sees 2.75 Gb of Ram
Vista Ultimate x64 4.00 gb of Ram

HOnest;y the 4000+'s are like around 50 bucks, you can grab a 5000+ or even an OEM 5400+ for like 50-60 bucks more. I like the 5000+ black edition, but I like overclocking. The Oem's come without a fan/heatsink, but they are cheap and easily put on. I would ask him to leave out 2gigs of ram (unless your doing the x64 O/S) and ask him to upgrade the CPU to a 5000+ or so. But either way the 4000+ is a decent cpu.
I used to run nothing but AMD's but the Core 2 duo's came out and Intel took the lead in the CPU market then. Granted the Core 2's are more expensive, but I love them. I went from an AMD Fx-62 to an Intel q6600 (Core 2 Quad) and it's nice improvement. But they aren't cheap.

The only issue is that I only have enough to buy what he is building. I gotta sell some parts and then I will begin upgrading a little bit. Its not going to see any HEAVY duty use like my laptop. I use it for gaming and everything else.

ah well, if you want to upgrade it then by all means go. I still think the 4 gigs is a waste given a 32 bit O/S. It's a decent system to watch movies on and all...

I also want it for Photoshop and multimedia use. I just want something fast and powerful for internet downloads and memory.

I know everyone seems to complain about it being buggy and crap, but personally, I think it's not much of a big issue. I have Vista on a notebook that I purchased when Vista was still fairly new and the OS hasn't given me any big problems. Also as mentioned before by someone, Vista is where everything is going currently. 32bit is out of production or is soon to be, XP Pro is a great OS; better than Vista IMO, but it's getting dated. Most builds you'll see these days on AnandTech or any other computer community site include Vista instead of XP. XP had many issues when it first came out, then it turned into the best operating system(forget Linux) shortly after. Vista is fine right now, and with technology advancing rapadly, you'll want to go with a future proof OS.

Im not too concerned about my OS. My friend has Vista and I like it alil. XP PRo hasnt let me down either. Im not to tech smart so I just mess with the basics.

You may want to look into a better processor then. The 4000 will due those kinds of things but if your really into that sort of thing there is no such thing as too good a cpu. I would seriously consider the 5000 even the 6000 but they are kinda up there in price. New egg has the 5000 for like 120 or so retail, about 2 times the price of the 4k but worth it. The last thing you want is to buy a comp only to find it leaves you wanting more power. I find it's best to save, spend a little more up front to get more power outta my comps... I had my FX-62 for like 3 months when I went with a quad core. I should've just went with the quader....
