so, last week (perfect time right before christmas) we found out that our master bath toilet has been leaking around the wax ring. no, crap was not getting everywhere, just liquid. I have no idea how long this has been happening, for all i know 3-4 years since i bought the house.
the tile was startign to lift up sightly so i fugured i would take a look and pull a few up. Well, nedless to say, its been leaking for a while, the subfloor was starting to rot out, there was no concrete hardyboard under the tile, and thats why the grout was cracking.

So i made a choice, RENOVATE THE WHOOOOOOLLLLE ROOM!

i will be updating periodocly. heres the frst pix

HA, yea.. i know i throw that in the shower so the baby wont get it if its sitting on the edge of the tub.. our dog HAS top get a bath at least once a week so we jsut keep everythign in the bathroom for easy access

i was waiting on a comment on that!

Also, the tiles are in one of the top pix, its a greyish, with a little tan cermic tile, for the floors, and the shower walls, floor, celing, and around the jacuzzi tub are going to be slate.

also, i can dicide if i want to go with a doorless shower, or put a door on there.. im thinking a doorless would be nice and look great, but with the cold air comming in, it would suck! lol

cut up the shower lastnight, wish i had pictures of that!!! i loove my sawzall!!

im putting down most of the backer board down today (floor & tub surround) and getting the shower preped to build the shower pan. im also going to ho to home depot expr to see if i can get the kohler body spray's... i LOVE those things!!!

when i get done its gonna be a 3/4 million dollar bathroom!!! to bad the house isnt worth that.. lol

Jimmy B
12-19-2007, 08:07 AM
well, i have ran most of the plumbing to the other side of the shower, i still have to run it for the body sprays, and hand-held bar sprayer, but that shouldnt take to long.
got the shower pan all prepped to build it with morter, and the liner, and got the subfloor cut out out and replaced. ai also have almost all of the concrete backer board on the floor, and most of it on the tub surround, so, its almost ready for tile! (as soon as we finish the showerpan)

i poured the first layer of the shower pan, its dry now, i have to lay the neoprene liner and water test it... that will happen tommorow..

i have to finish the plumbing, and cut some studs out to route the pipes adn to mount the pipes.. i jsut finished all of the backer board minus the shower..

i should have more pix tommorow!

here is some of whats been happening in the last few days, in between Christmas shopping!

first is a some of the accessoried in the shower, handheld showerhead, shuare shower head, body jets and the controls for all of that

then some of the plumbing for the jets and temp control and switcher

then the tub surround all cement boarded up except for the hole where it will have a door for access to the heater and motor for the whirlpool.

Here are a few of the finished shower pan, morter sloped for draining, then a neoprene plastic liner, then more morter to finish the slope and level the sides out and then build the "curb" to keep water IN the shower.

oh and putting the drain in correct also! lol

Jimmy B

im about to upload some more pics, gotta resize first.. thanks for the complements

i got the shower all done and then half of the floor

Jimmy B
01-05-2008, 09:59 PM
so, i got half of the floor done, then the baby had to go to bed, so, no more cutting tile!!

the shower is all done, except the grout and we are doing that tommorow..
shower floor is all 4x4 slate squares at a 45degree angle to make it look bigger, and to offset the straight lines of the walls

the floor tile is a 16x16 porcelin(sp) tile at a 45degree angle also to give the room a bigger feel and to not be so monotine with the straight lines.

hopefully tommorow grout will be done and i can finish the floor tile so we can grout that also.

after grout is all done we have to sand down all the walls, patch the holes and then paint and put the trim up.

sweeeetness love how it's coming together. How much $$ spent so far on the renovation? :D

Jimmy B
01-05-2008, 10:35 PM
so far i think ive spent about 3 grand.. the shower fixtures were 950 of that though

the little things add up when you put them all together!! just in the mud to secure the tiles i spent 160...

im thinking(hoping) that i can get done with about 5K and doing all the work myself.. the big things i still need are vanities, sinks, toilet, and faucets, a shower doorm lighting then the little things like paint, towel racks, mirrors, etc..

thats not bad at all, my rents are contracting out there master bath and its going to be 30k, another 20k for updating fixtures in the other 3 baths so 50 k total. you save a sh!tload by doing it yourself thats for sure bc alota that money is in labor

looks great man, its a blast doing home improvements on your own.

Jimmy B
01-07-2008, 02:38 PM
it was a blast.. the grout was left on the slate a little to long, and being slate its porus.. it sucked all the water out of the grout.. now im stig SCRUBBING each tile to clean the dried grout off of it.. BLAHHHH

it looks good though! i will post some more when i get most of the grout off of the slate.. i will tell you, the floor looks great right now! hhahah

yep, by teh time its all said and done, it would have been a GOOD 15-18k job if i had contracted it out.. i will prolly go over the 5K mark, but hopefully not to much

Just curious, but is your house on a slab? If not, what kinda floor support do you have under all that slate?

Jimmy B
01-09-2008, 04:23 PM
no, its on a basement.. i have 10" joists under the floor, and its a corner with 2 walls close to being under it. i will be putting some more bracing under just to be safe, when i clean out the stuff that is in the basement in that corner. it is heavy, but nothing that the house was not designed to handle..
