Got this emailed to me today, seems there is a new virus out there that has casued a bit of concern! Just giving everyone a heads up didnt, see this posted anywhere else! :goodjob:

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner:

It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title:

'You've received a Post Card from a Family member'.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so

that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+a lt+ del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York , according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails with subject: 'A Post Card from ' As soon as you get the mail, delete it !! Even if you know the sender !!!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to TransAxle again.

Yeah, I get tons of "e-cards" from people sent to my UGA email account. I am glad that I always delete them.

A quick Google on "Sector Zero" and came across this (http://virusbusters.itcs.umich.edu//hoaxes/virtual.html) and this (http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=98893). This appears to be an ongoing hoax going on for a couple years now. I searched CNN and couldn't find anything recently on this.

Another thing, you guys really don't have much to worry about. This happened in early '07, and was patched sometime in June. Most patched windows machines are good now.

Another thing...that whole "sector zero" is garbage. Its just a collection of malware and what not.

The "Sector Zero" point is probably a sensationalized tid bit, but the whole "You Have a postcard from xxx" is true. Just old...nothing to get riled up about though. If you've updated windows in the last 6 months you're fine.
