Its just Cali though. I don't think there are any other states that are THAT strict yet.

One question though - say I drive a hypothetical modified car from GA to Cali and drive around on a vacation or something. What would they do?

Once Sung was stopped, they saw other signs of illegal street racing, including a fiberglass hood and a sway bar on the back of the car, said Officer Brian Nystedt. A peek under the hood revealed the vehicle identification number had been chipped off the transmission, which is a sure sign of a stolen part, Nystedt added.

That is stupid as hail.

I think modifying cars keeps a lot of kids out of trouble,

In a way. But at the same time, it gives a lot of kids a different avenue to get in trouble on with. People slap an intake on a Honda and thing they're Mario Andretti and start their racing every other car on the road.

just look at the decline of street gangs as a result of kids getting hobbies

Theres no proof of stolen parts.

His transmission was missing a vin number, so what, JDM swaps DONT HAVE VINs.

Even if he RECEIVED stolen parts, that shouldnt be grounds for him having his car CRUSHED. lotta good that did to people that had their stuff stolen :gay:

DrivenMind
11-30-2007, 10:42 AM
Sucks they crushed his car, but to be honest most of the people I've met who have legitimate swaps still have the VIN on their car. Filing it off, just makes the car look at much more suspicious. From what I've heard stealing Honda's and Honda parts is a big business out in Cali.

Can't you use the VIN on new motor, to prove that you purchased it legally, from a legitimate source?

If a fiber glass hood, is an indication of street racing, I'd hate to see what the cops in Cali make of carbon fiber doors, and roll cages. Probably just an on the spot street racing ticket.

Wasn't just missing according to the story, it was chipped off. So JDM trannies come with the place where the vin goes already chipped off? Interesting.

You don't accidently buy something like an engine or tranny that was stolen in a place where theft of such parts like that is highly prevelant. (sp?) Obviously, he could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he bought the parts from a legit source. Possesion is 9/10's of the law. He got pulled over for a modified exhaust, which over there happens all the time, and it snowballed from there.

As for the cops saying he's a street racer, lets be honest now, he did not put all those parts on the car to make the car slower. If thousands of other ppl run around causing accidents and racing with parts and cars much like that kid, why is unfair for them to assume he's one of them? I did not mod my srt when I had it cause I wanted better gas milege, I did it so I could be faster. I think the kid got off easy, a crushed car hurts for a little while, felonys ruin lives.

Or because I had an intake on my MSM I was a street racer? It's 100% presumption and that's bullsh*t no matter how you cut it. I'm Asian, so I guess I play Starcraft all day and work on a shrimp boat too.

Now I'm all for catching street racers, but to assume that he's a street racer just because of parts is stupid.

Strong point. The money parted out from the car could be used to beef up their street racing task force or some other good cause.Perhaps, but I don't believe it would be good for the local or state law enforcement to be selling off stolen parts. Kind of defeats the purpose. Now I'd be all for refitting the vehicles with stock parts and auctioning them off.

but see, he did not get busted for being a street racer. The article makes it seem that way, but there are legit reasons for him being stopped, arested and the car crushed. Not because he's a street racer. I've got a intake and pulley on my mini, no having mods doesn't make you a street racer, but when you do things that draw attention to yourself like that, you have to know it's gonna happen. Like it or not man, I'm sure you've seen some modded civic (or other car)out there on the road and thought something about them racing. Don't want to be labeled a street racer, don't drive a car with mods that ppl associate with it. Simple as that. Sterotyping happens everyday, to damn near everyone. Part of life. You do it, I do it, everyone has done it at one point in time. Maybe not about street racing, but other things. no sense in crying about how unfair it is. ( not saying your crying about it, just talking in general) **** man, I'm mexican and yet how many stereotypes are running the boards about mexicans? :D

That would be like frisking me for weapons and drugs just because I wear baggy pants and a hoodie.

Sterotyping FTL, even if it does happen everyday. It's even worse when it's by law enforcement.

EDIT for your edit: I know what you mean man. Still, you know just as much as I do how much labeling and stereotyping sucks. I'm not against the police in Cali taking a stand against street racers, I just wish they had a better system of going about it then just assuming every modded car is own by one.

11-30-2007, 01:19 PM
this author was obviously biased. out in cali, mod laws are strict. being pulled over and having your car CARB checked is a regular occurance. ultimately his car was crushed because he had stolen parts (vin filed off of tranny). did anyone read the part where it said that the only parts he could prove he bought were the wheels?

Ya but you can't charge someone on simple suspicion alone, just because he has parts to make his car perform better doesn't mean he's guilty of committing a crime. That's like charging someone with murder because they walked into a room with a knife, the mother ****** could have just been cooking.

And ya, "chipped off" sounds like some sketch ****. Chances are some poor guy worked his ass off for that swap, only to have a couple of spineless ****s jack his car, strip it, and sell the parts for cheap.

how can the police legally do this?

do what impound and crush a car for having stolen parts? Gee I don't know. Some people need to go back and reread the story. The original reason for being pulled over was a modified exhaust, which in cali isn't outta the norm. The car apparently had multiple parts that were either in violation of the code, or stolen. The judge determined that he had stolen parts on the car he could not prove were legit, and the punishment for it was the crushing of the car. The story's author obviously wanted to make it seem that he was a street racer, but.....he really was guilty of a crime. Also it's said the kid got a deal on the whole situation, he took a misdermenor and a crushed car as opposed to a felony. I think I would've taken the same. It's plain as day at the end when they say the ONLY thing the kid could prove he bought was the rims. Meaning, most if not all the other stuff was stolen. I think the kid got off super easy. For all we know that kid stole the parts himself. Yet all everyone sees is "ooooh he was labeled a street racer". I think they should've crushed the car AND gave him a felony...but I'm not a judge.

wth? so u can just get pulled over for just having a couple of modsto your car? what if you bought parts from a friend that he bought online and he also lost his way of sayin its his? i suppose it still consider stolen since nobody can prove its legit? its good that the law is out there bustin street racers and all but i still think it just fu*ked because of the false assumptions and how strict it is. and i hope yall know it just not only hondas that gets fu*ked, is also those s15 silvia and rb26 240s.
