OK, so I turn 21 in a couple weeks, and I plan on getting my carry permit. I want to know what some of the gun buffs [Julio, Ruiner, etc.] carry with them most of the time. Now I'm a 'gun guy', so don't flame me for this being some whim. I have uite a few guns that I inherited from my dad when he passed away, and that I've gotten as gifts over the years. Anyways, the two I've been looking at are the Walther P99's and the S&W M&P. I really don't like the feel of a Glock, they don't fit my hand well. Julio, I know you had a P22...how was it?

The P99's are great guns. Very reliable. Good prices and good accuracy also. Me personally wouldn't enter a gunfight with anything less then a .40 but that's just me.

I agree totally, mainly I was just wondering how the p22 was as far as reliability since it's the same platform, just a smaller caliber, as the P99.
and about the Taurus...that's a nice LOOKING gun, I may have to see if I can find someone who has one to see if I can see how it feels. I believe in shooting a gun before you buy to make sure it works for you, so the S&W and Walther were just the ones I shot. As far as carrying big guns, well, I want something that I'm going to forget is there, basically. If I want to carry big I got a Colt King Cobra .357 mag revolver already.

...and yeah, I've looked at most of the popular polymer framed pistols. That in itself is the problem though, they're all pretty close as far as weight, accuracy, etc. which is making this harder than buying a damn car.

I personally think it's about how comforatble you feel shooting the gun and what type of clothing you wear on a daily basis. When I worked at Nissan as a tech and wore regular t-shirt and jeans I carried a Glock 30 .45 cal compact. I just sold that gun and plan on purchasing a XD .40 cal compact b/c I rented one at the range and it felt more comfortable. I will only carry this on nights and weekends now. I work in a lab/office now where I have to wear business attire so I've also been researching and checking out very small, hammerless .380 revolvers that can fit right into the pockets of my slacks or khackies. I like the .380 revolvers b/c you can run both .38 or .380 cal bullets through them. They are also pretty safe b/c you don't have to worry about the hammer inadvertently cocking or decocking and the trigger pull is pretty firm. Hope this helps.

I carry the XD Sub-Compact .40 everyday. I also own a Glock but i just prefer the XD. For the money its really hard to beat what comes what the package of and xd and also for a small barrell it is accurate.I mean hell i look at it this way ive taken mine to the range many times and within 30 yards i can shoot a very nice spread even do double taps with this pistol so there is no need to carry anything else. Where do you live at i may be willing to meet a range with ya and let u try some of mine out. I have a Walther p22, Glock 27, XD Sub Compact, and if u want to break out the big boy that ive hunted with S&W .500 mag. Cant shoot it at the range though and the only reason i purchased it was because ive always wanted to kill a deer with a pistol.

id say AT LEAST a .40 S&W, springfield armory maked one called the XD-40, or the XD-45. very nice pistols, nice sights, comes in a carry case with a mag holder and a molded holster. its about $500 i think. my friend has the XD-9 sub-compact, which is as you can tell a compact weapon. it feels great in your hand and has a hi cap 17 rd mag.

^^^Yes, we know you carry and pull out prematurely a .380....
Caliber is not as important as confidence with whatever you decide to carry. If you are depending on it to save your life one day, you should be able to shoot it accurately without a second thought. This is where "fit" sometimes comes in. This is what my buddy Jerel was trying to explain in his post. Sometimes some guns are purpose built type guns, i.e. hammerless snubbies, pocket pistols, etc. They are there for only one real reason, concealed carry. There are going to be pros and cons to ANY weapon. NO weapon is perfect for every situation, hence why some people have multiple weapons.
The bottomline is that I'm willing to put money on SOME people being able to drop anybody with a puny .22 because they can put it where it can do some damage. You can carry a .50 DE all day long, but if you can't hit the broad side of a barn because it kicks too much for you, then your .50 DE is about as worthless as tits on a hog. So, you need to choose a weapon that YOU can fire well EVERYTIME.
My suggestion? Any compact Glock, XD, Colt, S&W or the like. Your budget is really going to dictate that choice more than anything else. One way to find out is to go to a firing range where you can rent a variety of weapons. When you find one that feels comfortable and you can shoot well, there you have your new gun. :goodjob:

The new Sig Sauer P250 is pretty awesome. That'll be my next carry weapon. I currently carry a Smith & Wesson/Walther PPK SW99 and love it. Feels good in my hand, no safety, easy to disassemble and clean, and small enough to conceal everywhere I go.

the HKs are really nice, I just think they're a bit pricey.
Jaime, definitely good advice man. Like I said in my post, I've grown up with guns, my dad was a police officer for years, as well as just a plain gun enthusiast, so I was taught how to shoot young, and try my best to shoot often enough to maintain it. I agree with Gene's post earlier though, I'm leaning towards something in a .40 cal, .357 SIG or possibly a .45, but I'm not sure how pleasant that would be in some of the smaller guns. Oh well, like I said, I'm still looking and trying to shoot them all to get a feel in my free time.

Just goto a gun shop and fire a few models. See which fits you. Dont take a person's adivse until you try the gun. Everyone hand is different IE fingers width and blah blah blah. At first everyone told me to get a Colt .45 so I went and shot a few round. Not really comfortable to bulky. I tried the HK .45 now that felt right to me. So Im buying that soon.

well i hope that 380 would do the job and keep them from killing you after you attempted to "stop" them or slow them down..... and they can take your ass through the wringer if you shoot them.
if you have just cause to be pulling out a weapon and firing it at someone, you have just cause enough to kill them.
dead men tell no tales.
a lot of what makes the difference is knock-down power. sure you could carry a DE.50 with would knock both you and guy you are shooting on your ass.
but a .45 has much more weight and mass to it than a a 9mm or 380. even if you didnt kill them on the first shot they would SURE AS HELL think twice about pickin their ass up off the ground.

Wrong. I had one for a year before I got my GFL. Never was tempted.
which takes 4 -6 months to get.
Wrong. In a sense. The length of time depends on your location. Gwinnett has a turnover rate of about 2 months or less. Clayton County was running almost 9 months behind. I got mine in Rockdale County in 6 weeks.
but when u do get on are u gonna physically carry it on u all the time or just in ur car?

No I understand that completely, but carrying at work? Thats what seems overkill. Like I said before, I want a pistol and a concealed permit, but not to carry on me at all times, just to have in the car, or if I'm ever in a shady place of town.
What about the fact that people carrying guns tend to get shot more than people who dont? This has been proven statistically many times over.

but carrying at work?
Depends on the job, I think. If you work in an office building or warehouse or something, I would find it amusing that you would carry it. Imagine going to a staff meeting and sitting down at the big ass table with peers and execs and having to lay your 9mm on the table because it isn't comfortable sitting on it. Lolol. My job, it would be practical to keep with me. Only the Feds say I can't.
just to have in the car,
You don't need a permit for that.

the walther 22 is a cool little gun, great for target and pocket gun...i laugh when people laugh at the .22 and how they say it cant do damage, hit in the right place, and it will knock a bull down.
Anyways, go out shooting some different guns... I carry a glock 17.... and right now back it up with a Taurus Mill .40 until I sell that one to get a xd 40.
The Millienium Taurus .40 is damn good.. but the XD just feels little better, but when I mean a little better..slightly..
Is all about how it feels on you, grip, etc.. I mean, one gun may feel good on me, but bad on you... get it.
Aslong you choose a reliable gun with all the other factors you are good.
Other info : Gwinnett it says 90 days to get permit.. took me 30.
As far as I know there is no concealed permit or license in Ga.. in ga is GFL which means, GA firearm license..
GA is a open carry state.. that means , if you have a permit you can show it.
why carry a gun, better to then not to. GA has some weird as people....

because most of the people carrying guns (where they are needed) are pistol-packin, crack sellin, monkeys that cannot shoot.
on a side note..... if you pull a gun on someone and they have a gun they are more likely to shoot you in fear of their own lives...... thats why u shoot first, ask questions later.

the thing you want to look at is target aquisition(from a holstered position to target), holstered comfort in various positions (standing, sitting and driving), weapon concealability ("flashing" while GETTING YOUR WALLET at a store/convenience store or bank is HORRIBLE!!) and ESPECIALLY your own accuracy when it comes to shooting a handgun. 'cause i am a firm believer in " it's not the caliber, but where it's placed" that makes all the difference.
so get plenty of practice. i'd recommend AT LEAST 2 times weekly, based on your budget allows, that way you learn your weapon, get over whatever bad habits you may have and not know (aiming with the opposite eye instead of the side that holds the weapon [left eye, right hand:no: ], or closing your eyes prior to firing:no: :lmfao: :gay: , or anticipating the recoil and flinching etc:lmfao: :gay: )
either way, go to your local county courthouse NOW and put in for your CCW. that way by the time the B-DAY rolls forth, your permit is well into processing and maybe already in your wallet!!!!!

I have a S&W 9mm. I am going to get my permit in a couple weeks. I went last Friday, but the guy that does the fingerprints was not there, so they told me to come back. I am not allowed to carry mine on my job, though, unfortunately.

Excellent post and advice, except this part.
I'm not 100% certain, but from what I have read I think you have to be of age at the time of application. If so, putting it in before you turn 21 won't speed things up. I tried looking it up, but it wasn't 100% clear on that part. But from when I got mine years and years ago, I seem to remember they specifically asked for ID and proof of my age when I applied.

i just picked up a springfield XD-40 subcompact and have been carrying it lately. overall a really nice gun, feels and shoots great. also have a walther P22 which is a lot of fun, but i prefer the XD for carrying.
also, for some of those worried about insane permit wait times, i got mine in exactly 2 weeks in gwinnett.

Excellent advice for sure. I have enough land out here that I can shoot whenever I want, and like I said, I've been doing it since I was old enough to hold a gun, growing up in a big hunting/military/law enforcement family, so I agree 100% with everything you said. At this point I'm trying to figure out the guns that are generally considered practical/comfortable for day in, day out carry. Reps for ya, BTW.

When you turn 21 take the guns you do have to the gun range and practice with each to see which one works out. If none of the ones you own work for you then rent one from the range itself so that you can get the feel of which one you're more comfortable handling. Also whichever gun you do decide on make sure that you have a good holster to keep it in place and secure throughout your body movements, the more secure a gun stays on your side the better you'll feel carrying around your gun.
As far as GA Gun Laws, if you don't have a CCW and you plan to carry a gun with you, it has to be visible at all times from 3 different angles of view. That means no shirt, jacket, pants pocket, or anything covering the gun unless you have a CCW. I read enough on this because of conflicting stories from people. You can carry a firearm with you at a workplace as long as you have written consent from the business owner, not verbal, in case a LEO asks for docs you have it in writing. If you don't have the written permission of the business owner it's just like concealing a weapon without a CCW= bad terms with the Fed's. That's about as much as I can remember right now.
Good Luck

MIL/LEO families FTW!! grew up watching my pops walk around with M16's, shotguns and gans of other weapons, definately helped nurture my respect/admiration for weapons. my fam is like yours, i've got an uncle that swears he's a cowboy, we laugh at that but not the fact that he can and outshoot any male in the family, my dad included. we watched one time as he spotted a turtle in a small lake about 100 yards offshore and took it's head off with one shot!
growing up they used to have shooting comps and an older cousin was close enough to the turtle to bring it out for proof.....this is the same uncle that would warn neighbors if he moved to a new area by moving his things in, then would walk outside with his shotgun and fire one round in the air, then quietly walk back inside. :lmfao:

I just went up to Probate court in Gwinnett and they even have a different way of re-newing the license. Now, you have to do the whole application process over again. You have to fill out the application, get fingerprinted, and pay the fees.....and WAIT. Yep, you have to wait just like the first time. It should be no biggie though. They gave me a temp. 90 day one while waiting on my perm one to come back. No biggie.
I do seem to remember reading on the paperwork that you do have to be 21 at the time of application though. I know they asked me for I.D. when I filled out the paperwork, so I'd imagine they would turn you away if you're not of age.

Lol.. dont listen to this noob.. no CCW in GA actually. CCW is mostly a general term, most states have different names or abbreviation... In GA Is called a GFL.
YOU CANNOT CARRY A LOADED GUN ON YOU WITHOUT A GFL in GA.. dont believe me.. try it... HAHAHAHA what a fool. Visible or NOT.
With a GFL you can carry either concealed or OPEN CARRY. YES , GA is a OC (open carry) state.

I've actually been told on numerous occasions by numerous different law enforcement, from police to trooper, that you CAN carry a weapon without the license as long as it is in plain view. It has to be in a holster and completely visible. But I never did it. Best thing is to wait until your license gets back. Later, QD.

That's how it has been for years, Jaime. Except for the 90 day permit. I'm very surprised to see that they do that. Seems ironic that they would issue a temp license until your background check came back. What if it comes back negative? I know they can just cancel the temp, but why issue it in the first place? Lolol. Later, QD.

dont believe that. Cops are the biggest liars when you ask them about laws.. honestly I think a large % of them do not know the laws.. Thats why they have to call **** in.
I dont believe a word they tell me unless is something simple, Like, What flavor doughnut is that ? :lmfao:
