lupe fiasco is still holding it down
Peoples mentalities are changing. You can see the progression, and the content is just crap now. Compare rap made in 1996 to now. Some of the rap now is as good, but a majority of it is just bragging about cars, lifestyle etc.

It doesn't matter what happens, people are still gonna rap about money, cars, girls, drugs, and killing people... But you can do it without sounding like a dumbass rapping
like this song
Bone Thugs-n-harmony - Notorious Thugs Lyrics
Bizzy:
Bone and Biggie, Biggie.
It's Bone and Biggie, Biggie . . .
Krayzie:
We gonna rock the party [rock the party, party].
Better run and tell everybody [everybody, everybody].
alternating with Layzie:
Ride. Let's ride. Let's ride. Let's ride. Come on and . . .
Bizzy:
Get high, get high, get high . . .
This is a lake of fire, but I can't even hold on.
[Simulated clapping.]
Krayzie:
Notorious thugs.
Layzie:
Nothin' but them thugstas. Nothin' but them thugstas [thugstas].
Notorius B.I.G.:
Armed and dangerous: ain't too many can bang with us. Straight up weed, no
angel dust. Label us notorious thug-ass ****** that love to bust. It's strange
to us, y'all ****** be scramblin', gamblin' up in restaurants with mandolins
and violins. We just sittin' here tryin' to win, try not to sin, high off weed
and lots of gin. So much smoke, need oxygen, steadily countin' them Benjamins.
*****, you'd should, too, if you knew what this game would do to you. Been in
this **** since ninety-two. Look at all the bull**** I've been through:
so-called beef with you-know-who, ****ed a few female stars or two. Then a blue
light, ****** move like Mike, ****, not to be ****ed with. Mutha****a, better
duck quick, 'cause me and my dogs love to buck ****. **** the luck, ****,
strictly aim, no aspirations to quit the game. Spit your game, talk your ****,
grab your gat, call your click, squeeze your clip, hit the right one. Pass that
weed, I gotsta light one. All them ******, I gotsta fight one. All them hoes, I
gotsta like one. Our situation is a tight one. What you wanna do: fight or run?
Seems to me that you'll take B, Bone and B.I.G., *****, die slowly. I'm a tell
you like a ***** told me, cash rules everything 'round me. ****, lyrically,
****** can't see me. **** it. Buy the coke, cook the coke, cut it. Know the
*****, before you caught yourself lovin' it. *****, roll the Benz, ****in' in
it. Doesn't it seem odd to you? B.I.G. come through with mobs and crews.
Goodfellas down for the Mo Thug crew. Who's the killa: me or you?
Puff Daddy:
We forgive you, for you know not what you do.
Bizzy:
Seven A.M. woke in the morning, with Hen and caffiene and green and nicotine.
No dough, so pop a couple of those. Little RIPsta, *****, Mr. Clean make it
gleam, deep in my temple, and I go get sentimentally steamed with my
instrumelody and heated especially for your team and the forty-five indeed will
beam in between the seams, destroy your dreams. You willing to die? We'll see
how many flee when I 'cause the scene. We mean mug, Mo Thug, trained to be
perfect disciples when it's survival time, die by double-edged sword, triple
six rivals spittin' fire, that's the real truth, *****, breakin' down for
lives, my Messiah, better get ready for Armageddon, shoots expired, it's wild.
Bless the child, the one that became a man, but them positions' already there,
all that I had to do was stare. Test me now, contend, never no surrender, no
pretend, pick up my gun in my hand, one of my trusty friend, friends. Hey, open
and let 'em see if we're real. We all suited, beg my pardon to Martin, baby, we
ain't marchi
n', we shootin', and daily recrutin'. There's a thug born everyday in the
ghetto. We start 'em off little, we give 'em a bottle and a pen and pad. They
hit the label, kick it.
Krayzie:
Little Kray roll on over to the dark spot, to the dome with a shot of burb, now
me go back to the curb. Me feelin' that urge to splurge, but I'm broke as ****.
"Sin, gimme that Mossberg swerve." Off into my pad, 'cause I gotta get my mask
and shells to put in this twelve-gauge sawed-off, get 'em mauled off, *****,
y'all lost. They get hauled off. Got a ***** callin', though, for the pump, now
Leatherface, Sin runnin', thuggin' and cuttin', Lil' Mo! Hart quick to pull it,
ain't nothin'. *****, if you're steppin', we're buckin' them guts. That's
****ed up. Now let me get down for the crime. Got to go purchase a dime, put in
the state, ***** double the crime, smokin' the reefer to ease my mind. Swig
some wine, step on the block with the rocks, but really me servin' 'em dummies,
see. Gotta buck 'em on down, if they come talkin' like, "Give me back me
money." Thuggin' with me killas, need us a liter of liquor, but ****** ain't
got ****, but a sawed-off pump, chrome .38 pistol, now who ready to get back
? ***** like me fiendin' for them green leaves, but I ain't had no dough. Gotta
make some money, so I makin' my dummy rocks, if I go broke.
It's Bone and Biggie, Biggie.
It's Bone and Biggie, Biggie . . .
Krayzie:
We gonna rock the party [rock the party, party].
Better run and tell everybody [everybody].
alternating with Layzie:
Ride. Let's ride. Let's ride. Let's ride. Come on and . . .
Bizzy:
Get high, get high, get high . . .
Layzie:
[Yeah.] Little Lay, hey, comin' in the form of scripture, fin to get ya and hit
ya with magic, drivin' out late, but I call on my gadgets. With an automatic
status, we spray. Time to load the glocks, but I'm thinkin' not, there's
another evil force tellin' me to do what I gotta do, so I up my pipe, a *****
dyin' tonight, and I'm always runnin' from the boys in blue, biggy-blue's on my
ass. Now, I whip out the cellular phone to call Bone, "What's happenin'? Grab
artillery. ****** start packin', 'cause a mutha****a tried to get me in a
jackin', and I did him." Hit 'em right between the eyes. The spot was wise.
Wanna test a *****'s size, and it cost him. ***** **** around with the wrong
****, y'all get mo mudered all day, all day. We can play that way, and I'm on
the run. I'm a call my boys, and bring all the guns. Y'all ****** wanna have a
little fun with #1, bloody red, redrum, rum, rum, rum, rum, rum, bloody red,
redrum, rum, rum, rum, rum, rum, bloody red, redrum.
Bizzy:
It's Bone and Biggie, Biggie.

Better run and tell everybody [everybody].

Some of the influence isn't always from the rapper, but from the record labels. I remember a few things from Hip-Hop in America and that 3 6 Mafia's show HollyHood or something that use to come on VH1 and the guy was telling them what they wanted to hear and that they needed to make a song pertaining to that of which he stated.

I agree that there has been a general decline in the amount of good hiphop over the last few years but there is still plenty of dope stuff coming out these days. Unfortunately, you will never find it by listening to the radio or watching tv. Keep in mind, things go in cycles. When rap first became big, most of them were rocking huge gold chains, talking about drugs, and partying.

Slick Rick was one of the best shows I've ever seen. That **** was hilarious.

SIMPLE ANSWER
STOP!!! LISTENING TO THE ****ING RADIO!
i wholeheartedly agree with you..a lot of bull**** plays on the radio..but as long as morons keep supporting it, they're gonna keep on playing and bringing more to the airwaves.
just gotta explore out the norm man.. they're still decent artists out there, just got to know where to look..
if want some soom good music, i highly recommend the following
Little Brother- they just released a new album call Getback, but i recommed you go grab the Chitlin Circuit 1.5
Speaking of the Justice League. pick up the album "sleeper"
Some from ATL
Pshcye Origami and Minimina Goodsong(check them out at www.Arcthefinger.com)
ANYTHING by J Dilla( Try to find assorted donuts..(tracks collaborations with Jay-z, ghostface, slick rick, the list goes on.this man did so much for the rap/hip-hop scene. and even after his death, his beats are still legendary and groundbreaking.
but while i'm at
check out Outkasts new song,)Da Art of Storytelling part 4

if you werent stereo typing it seems like 70% of music is all about stuff that has nothing to do with them. sure alot rap isnt real, but alot is. same goes for every other genre of music. plenty of artists go along with the singing about stuff that has nothing to do with them, outside of rap artist. cant act like rap/hip hop are the only ones doing it, its all of them. even when its not songs that relate to them, they make songs that will relate to other people. if people only write songs about **** theyve been through, they would just be making musical biographies and that would be lame.

They play what the people want to hear. And when its middle class white kids footing the bill you cant expect to much out of todays rap songs. I heard this once and believe it to be true once you make it on MTV, say TRL your set haha.

look instead of bitching about it, why dont ya'll look around for some underground and/or indie artists, there are some great finds out there, and all the **** ya'll are bitching about is usually the reason that they are indie or don't go mainstream
check out atmosphere, mug b, felt...pretty much anything on the rhymesayers record label and listen to the lyrics; its rap and it actually makes sense(i didnt think it was possible either)

as far as how music in general is going i'm happy as hell records arent getting sold, that artists are having to live on a "humble 100K a year". i hope that all these b/s artists and groups who make music for money and fame end up washed up regular people. then maybe people will start making music for the love of music again.

Oh yea, it sucks all kinds of ass. I mean... I CAN like it on occasion, but when u get a non-black random dude name Khaled actin like he hood, cuz he makin music for black people, doesnt make sense. Plus... being "hood" (to my knowledge of the hoodlems I know) has nothing whatsoever with driving pretty cars with Florida tags and gettin drunk and partying and having ur pants hang below ur waist. I mean... I do that ish and I'm not even hood.
And y tha hell does EVERYONE have to be hood for? Or ghetto, or whatever? I mean, eventually ur gonna run outta hood space, then what?
