Had the D200, which was also a very nice camera. But the D300 just blows its doors off. I actually wasn't expecting such a huge difference, but I am shocked. The colors, DOF, and low light pics are not even the same. The D300's 1600iso shoots like my D200's 400iso.

i didn't even know they had a 300 lol.. i no nothing about cameras.. but man do i want to learn.. just gotta get my first dslr... some day :( congrats on the camera though man.

Here is a shot done with both my D200 and D300, same ISO(800), F/7.1, Exposure(1/60), Lens (Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR II), Focus @ 20mm, Flash (sb-600) Etc..

I have not done any editing to eighter, only set the D200 to Auto and then put the D300 to manual so I could duplicate the exact conditions.


I am by no means a pro... hell I wouldn't even call myself an amature. I just like snapping photos. So I know someone will comment on how I did it wrong. Your probably correct I did probably do something wrong, but in any condition the D300 is easier for me to use. Giving me a much better shot and picture.

Yeah from what I have seen/read the D300 is an awesome camera as is the D3X. Nikon really stepped the game up on their cameras. Canon is going to have to step up theirs now.

a guy came by the store with the first one sold at wolf camera. It was pretty impressive. Not to mention the lcd is HUGE. lol

i thought the coolest thing was the preview. The mirror is like a point and shoot camera. so you see what the picture is before you press the shutter button

I was about to say that someone on the photo forum posted about their D300 then I saw your test pics and you're the same guy haha! (I'm "DSLR_Noob" on that site) Congrats and enjoy the camera, if I see you at a meet, you have to show that thing off to me.

Also: I'll say what was said on the other forum: "That's a bad comparison." You have to get out the tripod, put the D200 on it, take a picture, replace with the D300 on the same tripod in the same place, swap the lens over, and shoot with the same shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. You can't change ANYTHING because in this instance, the baby might have thrown off the light meter. Also make sure they're both on manual, not one on auto and the other to duplicate with manual. Also put both in the same file size mode, if one's RAW and the other is large JPEG, converting the RAW with no post processing will make it look duller and flatter. Last thing, make sure the camera isn't on a parameter with the contrast or sharpness boosted. I only say all this because there is NO way the camera body alone makes that much of a difference as posted above.

I could be wrong, but the first pic does not look like the flash fired. Either that or something kept the flash power very, very low. The settings seem to be the same, but the flash is not between the two pics.

The settings seem to be the same, but the flash is not between the two pics.That's what i thought until i played with the exposure and brightness some, look at the blue toy in the center of the pic i edited...the flash reflection is now almost identical to the D300 pic when it didn't even look like a flash was used in the original D200 pic.

But look at the left side of the image. Look how quickly the detail falls off in your edit vs. the D300 pic. You can't see the doo that is there. I still don't think the flash fired at the same power in both pics.

Looking at the info again, someone tell me if I am way off here....

D200 pic was done in "Normal" mode (don't know Nikon Cameras), which is some sort of automatic mode. The summary data shows that the flash fired under the flash mode. The camera would have automatically set the flash power.

D300 pic was done in "Manual" mode. The summary data does not show andthing under the flash mode. Could the flash been already set to full/higher power in this pic?

There seems to be a 3 day difference in the pictures, in which he could have had a different power setting on the flash???

I also bought the D300. It is bad ass. Way better than the D200 for sooc jpegs. The AA filter is not as strong like the D200 was.
