An all-clear has been issued after the Michigan State Police bomb squad and the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety determined a suspicious package found on a bus stopped on campus this morning is not a threat, officials said.
The Ruthven Museum on Central Campus was evacuated after the suspicious package was found on a U-M commuter bus stopped at the C.C. Little bus stop along North University Avenue at about 11:51 a.m., said U-M Police spokeswoman Diane Brown.
Members of the State Police bomb squad from Lansing issued an "all clear" shortly after 2 p.m.
Brown said the box contained an automotive turbo-charger kit. She said the bus driver and passengers had reported that the man carrying the box was acting suspicious, holding the box very tight while on the bus. She said he was "very protective of the box, yet left it on the bus."
Police are trying to identify the man who left the box on the bus, Brown said.
The scare forced authorities to shut down North University Avenue between Fletcher and Church streets for several hours, Brown said.
