fwd cars can be fast as crap on a track with the right driver. basically, you have to drive one with more oversteer. its the opposite of RWD. FWD throttle = understeer. you have to learn to pitch the car into the corner. instead of going full throttle to rotate, you lift.
WEIRD.

Stock for stock yes, but that's only because people have always built Firebirds/Camaros/Mustangs and the like for straight line. You don't see many big bore domestic coupes built to take on Miatas in their comfort zone. There's nothing that says you can't make a Firebird or any other American coupe turn and stop. Ever heard of Mark Donohue?
No matter what car it is, and no matter what suspension geometry it is (even strut fronts and solid rear), you can make it handle as long as the weight isn't too outlandish. I'd be really, really scared of a well built 5.0 Mustang built for the road course instead of the drag strip.
And nOObs, I didn't take the time to read the whole thread, but is that a 305 or a 350 or...something else in that Firebird? You can never tell what lump someone has dropped in over the years.

Ever heard of Mark Donohue?
.
Yes I have. But I have heard of all the old guys...I was alive then. :D
There was a 3 hour endurance race at Road Atlanta during the recent ARRC. It featured various types of IT (improved touring) cars including V8 Mustangs. Those cars were quite fast and turned good lap times but heavy fast cars tend to use up brakes. Also, being of standard Ford quality offers other issues. In the end a Miata won overall...which isnt unusual in my SCCA experience.
Being agile, light, and able to maintain speed through corners and run consistent lap times without mechanical failures is everything in that kind of racing. The Miata is a world class sports car car perfectly suited for just that.
A Neon on the otherhand is a car well suited to unemployed redneck trailer park life. :D
As for an 81 Fireturd...those were built during an era of heavy pig underpowered slowassness. Although any car, including one of those, can be built to go fast, it wouldnt be the greatest platform for road racing....unless youre racing other heavy pigs of the same type and era. :goodjob:

No matter what weight reductions you do, a chassis that long with the outdated suspension setpus and egith distribution(main facto here) you simply cannot beat the Japanese sports car with American counterparts unless you are talking about a late model Corvette.

It has just under 500 (don't remember exact numbers, like 480 or something) WHP, and torque to match. And it has circle track styled 17's with 275/45/17" tires.
Car was bought for $1500, motor for $1000, about $1500 in suspension mods, give or take a few. Plus about another grand in the motor to make it as bad as it is now (its a 400 that was going to go in a boat lol). And like 500 or so in wheels/tires. Mostly which were from the tires!
Total in the car is right in there between 5-6k. Just depends on how you build it like i said.

Yeah, a Firebird is 150% of the weight a Miata has to lug around.
Yeah, the Firebird also has 147% more power and 255% more torque than the Miata. (no exaggeration here)
Let's not forget the fact that the Miata will reach full potential WAY EARLIER than the V8 powered Firebird.
There's no replacement for displacement.
EDIT: okay, i just re-read the first post of this thread and realized that it's a track race and not a drag race. In that case, power and displacement won't be the primary factors, but I think that they'll make up for the heavier weight, and the subpar handling characteristics of the Firebird.

^ you're forgetting that the Firebird in question is someones "pulled out of the kudzu" special. It's a 81 and had 8974359874 smog restrictions, has NOT been restored, has not been tuned....... IT'S A 220HP BOAT ANCHOR. The 81's were the slowest of all from back then. I know that car isn't a 455 or one of the other larger engine options...... and the side pipes probably take power away too....

And Mike's car is going turbo (yes, two turbo Miata's in one house) very soon and may or may not be up for sale. The car he was thinking about buying was sold and we're looking for a very specific car to replace his. It isn't going anywhere until then.
that's good that he's not selling it just yet. that is one badass miata.

Damn im slippin anyway danielle im just pickin on your ass.
rice? - american? BOOOOOOO
if you want to see a real firebird the dude i bought my miata from will show ya how to build one.
all i gota say is ITS A BEAST.
maybe if youd hang some time insted of being a noobsauce you could check it out.
but put a bigger engine in your car.... still cant outhandle me AND THAT was the meaning of this post.
AND LEARN TO DRIVE A ****ING 5speed!
YOUR NOT A DRIVE UNTIL YOU ARE REALLY PART OF THE CAR! COME ON!
took me 15 min. to learn.
lol. i'm just working on getting all the kinks out of this bird at the moment. 6 hours of body work with bondo and spot putty and i JUST got the first coat of paint on her. and talk about being a n00bsauce, i'm not the one who posted this thread. lololol i actually go out and WORK on my car. i don't sit on the internet all day.
auto transmission = for lazy people like me who don't care to make my car shift. i like it to do it on its own.... now THAT'S impressive. lololol

LOL @ Firebird, redneck car with all of its weight over the front wheels, Mazdas FTW, A Miata will hand a Firebird its ass if there are any twisties involved, and an FD would would beat it, and still have time to stop and let the turbos cool.
just so you know, i'm NOT a goddamn redneck. i just like the car. get off my twat a-hole.

You can never tell what lump someone has dropped in over the years.
it's a 305. not much hp, but it runs, so i'm happy. i just want to do this car some justice. i could give a crap less about street racing or track racing or any b-s like that. i just want that car to be everything that it could be. and thank you for not being a douche like everyone else and playing devil's advocate on this thread. i'm sick of people not being able to fathom that their car could maybe, just possibly get beaten by another car. >_> i hate close-minded people.

also those auto transmissions were way better than the stick shift they had..hell i believe the IROC-Z ran .4 faster with a auto

As for an 81 Fireturd...those were built during an era of heavy pig underpowered slowassness. Although any car, including one of those, can be built to go fast, it wouldnt be the greatest platform for road racing....unless youre racing other heavy pigs of the same type and era. :goodjob:
and that's why i don't want to make it a track car. i want to make it a drag car. i mean look on the bright side... if you wreck an old "heavy pig" it's no big deal to fix... cause you can just go to a pull apart or a junk yard or if you want to spend a little more money, year one or national parts depot and buy new parts for cheap... if you wreck a miata or something of that nature, parts are EXPENSIVE.
i'm not trying to start anything on this forum... the only reason i have an account here is because of my corolla and a few friends of mine who introduced me to it. anyways... i like my heavy pig of a car, and i wouldn't trade it for the world. even for a miata.

I'd be careful with your exaggerations Mazdaguy. The Miata weighs about 2200 lbs and the Firebird is about 3300 lbs. That's nowhere near a 2x difference.
Best of luck to you, n00bsrus, or whoever is racing. :goodjob:
thank you for your support and overall kindness... it kinda sucks when an entire thread forum of guys is attacking a female. cut me some slack guys. i just got into cars about a year and a half ago. i just like to drive fast and learn about cars every opportunity i can get, and once again. i love my firebird. it's the most awesome thing i've ever owned and the fact that i actually paid for it with my own money makes me even more proud to own it.

u can do lot more for less money with soemthing like a camaro, mustang, firebird compared to a RX-7 which mods cost pretty penny
i couldn't agree more. unless you're going for the original factory remake look.... cause that year one $hit's expensive

Keep in mind... we are NOT talking about this:
http://www.dragtimes.com/images/10901-1979-Pontiac-Firebird.jpg
More about on the lines of...
http://www.ctcautoranch.com/Cars/Pontiac/1979%20Pontiac%20TransAm/1979%20Pontiac%20Trans%20Am%20C.JPG
actually my car has never sat in kudzu or a field, it's in immaculate condition for an almost 27 year old car. it had maybe 2 rust spots on it which were about the size of a quarter. the body has never been damaged. no it doesn't have the 455 engine in it, i believe you're thinking of the trans ams of 1979(and earlier) which has the 455 stock. trans am does not = a firebird. don't be fooled. and it's not a formula. it's just a sort of rare girl model of the firebird (81 espirit skybird). now... i'll bet you 100000$ that if i fully restored this car to it's original specs i could buy 2 miatas with the money i made off of it. but that's not what this thread is discussing.
on another note, the first pic is from a 1st gen body style... it's not even the same body style as the second picture.

Well my comments were directed to the original post...
"93 Miata vs. 81 Firebird-
Both bone stock.
ON track not drag.
who wins?"
...so they stand as is. :goodjob:

.
81 Firebird parts arent that plentiful in junkyards, I used to make my living from classic cars....and Miata parts dont cost me much of anything...but I appreciate your enthusiasm. Enjoy your classic!

Yeah... uuummmm about that bet. If you had that kinda cash, i'd take you up on it. I have yet to find a clean/original/numbers matching 81 Firebird for more than $25k, but that was for a Trans-Am Pace Car edition..... not a base model Furbird.
But, you're saying that after paying a few thousand dollars and then investing a modest $25,000 to restore (using correct parts, and PROPERLY restoring.... not using tubs of bondo and Macco paint), you're goign to have to sell it for about $70,000 to be able to cover the cost of 2 modest Miatas. I'm assuming you'd be talking about newer miatas..... which go for $15k to $20k for a 2004-2005 and new MX-5's can go as high as $30k.
Yeah, i dont think so.
