So I picked up a new project.1987 turbo 2 RX-7 It was 100% stock, minus the wheels, when i picked it up, 115K on her. just installed an Autometer boost gauge, and a A/F ratio gauge. Going this week for a full exhaust from the turbo back and im ordering my SAFC and Bov later this month. merry christmas to me.

well i had both from a prior car, I am buying a voltmeter soon. so question how the hell do i keep it from flooding???? I already changed the plugs, ordered wires and changed the air filter. but i still have cold weather start up flooding and even warmish weather start up issues. any ideas???

dam nice car, there is something about the old body style rx7's and supras that just makes them look sleek and badass! nice car! :googjob: also dont mind asking how much did you pick that up for, always wondered how much those generally run!

The place i got it from was asking almost $5000, but when you wave cash around they tend to be more willing to work with you, $4000. You know honestly i went between an EVO, and STI, but after looking at them and really considering my options i realized i wanted a car i controlled and that wasn't basically being driven by an ECU . plus i get a huge hard on for late 80s-mid 90s hatch back sports cars.

Did you buy it from a person or a dealership? The reason I ask, one of my friends was the owner right before you.

I got it from a dealership. if your freind is on IA have him PM me, i got a couple questions. mainly did he ever get it to pass emissions or not. what what all little problems does he know about.

fyi u got screwed on that deal. that car is SUPER problems. there are like 3 oil leaks on the motor, the passenger side motor mount is held in with zipties :( if im not mistaken the diff mount is about shot??

i went to look at it from a "private seller" who was driving another car from the same place, a supra turbo. also COMPLETELY full of problems. if it was me..... ditch the car. unless you like suprises.

and if you knew about all of this stuff, idk why you bought it. if you didnt, sorry to burst your bubble, the "private seller" was going to give it to me for 3500... and ya, the "private seller" works at the dealership you bought the car from.
he told me he bought the car for a friend but the friend got robbed and couldnt buy the car from him, so he "needed to get rid of it fast", and had a similar story for the supra.....

if you think im just ****ing around, it is leaking oil SLOWLY out of 3 spots on the front of the motor 2 places near the intake man. and one above/behind the water pump. and i bet the dealership, unless they decided to fix the diff. mount and motor mount after me and a friend pointed it out, missed it in their inspection b4 they sold it to you.

and just so you know, to help with starts on flooding, install a switch for the fuel pump. there isnt much you can do as far as ive learned to STOP the flooding on cold starts.

Yeah i just found the motor mount. the diff mount was replaced. i just found the oil leaks this morning. I had no idea all this stuff was wrong with it. but im going to start working my way through them. im going to install the switch for the fuel pump tonight. just wondering if anyone can refer me to a good rotary shop localy. but thanks for the heads up. i bought it and kinda knew it was going to be a project. i just ordered a motor mount about 5 mins ago. so i geuss its time to start fixing it.

well thats good. too bad they didnt tell you about that. cuz we told the guy about all of it. im sure you COULD use that against them considering they did know about the problems to get some kind of reimbursment for the money spent to fix the mount, if its a big deal to you anyway.

nice car. im gonna get another RX7 someday. with 115k on the clock you better ask for some apex seal or a rebuild for christmas though. thats getting about the life of a TII motor.

Im not trying to be an @$$ but everyone I know that has had a rotary engine ****ing hates them. They have an @$$ load of electrical problems, a short life span, and they're just plain not reliable. I love RX7's and I love the sound or a rotary engine but they are more trouble than they are worth. If I were you I would swap in a 1jz, 2jz, RB, or even a V8 if ur into that kinda thing. Since you said its a project, a motor swap shouldn't be a problem, and you'll be much more happy in the end.

Once again Im not trying to be an @$$ Im just giving you my opinion.
Very clean FC, one of the straightest bodies I've seen.

Im not trying to be an a$$ but the electrical problems are just 20year old solderpoints in the ECU, the short life span of turbos are because of the turbo and usually poor matinance. Its about as much trouble as any other 20year old car . Parts are easly as avaible as pistion engines but other then that, rotarys are nice to you if you are nice to them.

But to the O.P. Great find. Clean as mess, and as someone else said, start saving for a rebuild kit. Turbos usually last around 15-120k. But if you pull then engine soon you will save yourself the trouble of having to get a new rotor and rotor housing with the rebuild kit. You want to hit up Rx7club.com for info. They have links to everything you need somewhere in the 2nd gen secton. Good luck and when my 7 is running a meet is going down!
P.s.(you paid wayyy too much for that thing.)

Yeah, im starting to realize that. but ive spoke to the people at Mazcare and they said i can drop it off in jan to start to get the leaks and a few other things worked out. apparently this motor in it has been rebuilt recently ( as in the last year) so im going to have them fix the leaks, check the compression and fix a few other small things. then its on to a FMIC, Some fuel management, and a little bigger turbo with some supporting mods. just did a test pipe 2 days ago. so ill keep y'all posted

0DISPLACMENT
11-15-2007, 10:52 PM
ummmm i was told the motor hadn't been rebuilt. but then again... who knows whats really gone on with it. i would just go ahead and rebuild it.. its a turbo, be safe :)

I keep hearing that it has, and i have heard it has not been. thats why im gonna let mazcare do a compression test. But ill just end up ordering a rebuilt motor from rotary resurrection or buying a JDM S5 motor. one of the two.

i love my FC, and FCs in general!
i looked at that car on the side of macland road, it was chained to 2 old school jet skis. i remember that dent above the tail light. the fact that it was an arctic silver turbo II surprised me, had never seen one.

that car is in better condition than most, good luck with it, keep up the maintenance.
and dont worry what people say about them being unreliable and problematic, if you love the car, it will love you.
i daily drove my first FC for 2 years and put about 60k on it, and it never left me stranded, the motor is in my second FC and now has about 180k on it and still runs strong. dont forget to redline it under load regularly (warmed up of course).
