So I've got the 240's water pump out, and there's no play at all in the pulley. The gasket was shot, and the car's been losing coolant, which looks like the gasket was at fault. Is it ok to just replace the gasket? I have a new pump and gasket, so I would much rather return the pump and just use the gasket if I can... good idea? bad idea? There's absolutely no play whatsoever in the pulley, no resistance from the mechanism... I hear a slight rubber squeak noise when I turn the old pulley, but other than that and a bit more resistance from the new pump than the old, the two are exactly the same. Help me out here!

Yeah I was worried for a sec cause I couldn't get two of the pulley studs off, but I just got them off so I'm gonna go ahead and replace the whole damn thing.. my luck if I keep the old one on, it'll break next week.

failed water pumps are designed to shoot water if they are not working properly, change the gasket, and if the problem persists, change the pump itself

If you have the money, change the water pump. If you need it else where, just change the gasket and hope for the best.
