i have had on occasion times where i have fallen asleep but still think im awake. I try to move my body parts but can only move the very slowly if at all untill i wake my self up. so it's like im inbetween sleep and reality. i was wondering if there is a name for that and if anyone else has had a similar incident? because it scares the crap out of me.

has happened to me and my ex gf before. my cousin too. don't know what its called but it does scare the living hell out of you. it makes you think you're paralyzed or something. its really hard to explain how it feels...

That used to happen to me a lot when I was a 12-14 yrs old. scared the crap out of me! Usually it would happen when I was just sleeping on the couch.

I think its from being disturbed during REM?

First thing the body does when you sleep is shut down unnecessary muscle movement. Like your arms and legs. The heart, brain, and respiratory system still works. So when you get startled or awaken suddenly it takes time for the signal to travel to your brain and let the muscles wake up.

I read that it happens often when you are stressed. So take time to relax before sleeping.

Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paralysis) of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnopompia) paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep) (known as hypnagogic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia) paralysis).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis#_note-0)

Physiologically, it is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_eye_movement_sleep) (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REM_atonia). Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain) awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia).

More often than not, sleep paralysis is believed by the person affected by it to be no more than a dream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream).[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] This explains many dream recountings which describe the person lying frozen and unable to move. The hallucinatory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallucination) element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as a dream, since completely fanciful, or dream-like, objects may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision.

hahah come to think about it, its happened once.. i was taking a nap here on campus in between classes and suddenly i woke up and realized class had already started and i didn't hear my alarm.. so i jumped out of the bench and when i tried to stand up, i competently fell on my knees.. until now i thought it was because my legs were numb from the position i was in, but i wasn't in any weird position.. so ya, my legs were still paralyzed.. haha i thought it was pretty funny at the time..
