What would you do?

Ok... you're coming into an undisclosed amount of money and you have no current form of transportation.

Awwwwww **** it. I'm coming into an undisclosed amount of money, and I need the opinion of someone whos had a little more experience with this than myself.

I want to have something fun to drive, so I'm looking into '93+ rx-7's. I'm in love with the car, and I've been doing a **** load of reading on them, and rotaries. I'm pretty set with what I'd want to obtain (power wise) and aesthetically speaking.

I'm also looking into getting a bike, probably an '04+ GSX-R 600. Thing is, insurance and costs would rape me on this, and I know I won't be able to have an FD and a bike, because that would screw me financially as well as leave me with no DD.


So the options are:
a) Buy a POS Civic for DD, and a RX-7 and have a very little left over money for supporting/reliability mods. (After insurance, tags, etc.)
b) Buy a RX-7 and make sure its in top condition, with reliability mods, and maybe even some supporting mods. Continue without a DD (its not 100% necessary in my current condition, but this would be driven more than just as a weekend warrior, but less than daily driven, I have no killer commute to work or school)
c) Get a semi-luxurious car (ie. '03+ Acura TL-S, 98-02 Accord) and a bike and call it a day. No more modifications to cars, just a nice DD and a fun 2 wheeled weekend warrior.
d) Get a bike, save the rest of the money, eventually end up with a beater DD (ie. civic)

Currently I'm having mixed feelings. Everytime I hear of a Mtn. ride I die a little on the inside. Everytime I think about driving an FD I die a little inside, and everytime I'm looking for a ride out into the country I cry a little on the inside.

A would be cutting it fairly close on finances, to the point where I might not even be able to register the FD or put a tank of gas in it. The others would leave me with a little breathing room, but nothing significant.

you would probably be happier in the long run with C. You would have something nice and clean to ride around in, then if u wanted to go fast or have fun just go home and get on the bike. :yes:

yeah, I'd avoid the rotaries. a unique motor but not the most reliable. don't get me wrong I love Rx7's. But don't do it if you don't have the time or money for the upkeep.
I think you should go with an option E, an option that would make you happy and give you the reliability that you are going for.

there are other fun cars out there that are inexpensive and provide a great options as to what you want to do with them. Ie. BMW2002's or 240sx's or even a Great little 95 Honda civic, (I have a friends that handles like you wouldn't believe and a have yet to ride in a car as fun as his).

Personally I'd take a 95 (newer are ugly IMO) civic with a stiff suspension and rock the jeebers out of it up the side of a mountain. for all that you are looking @ or around like what 5-6K... plenty of cash to put in a CD.

for a good working Rx7 you'll pay what... 12-15K right? wasn't it Mainstream that was saying they'll get you a 240 with a 2jz swap for like 10K out the door? lol... ok so that’s not a good Idea but it's what will make you happy right?

If I got a '95 or newer civic I'd still be getting a bike. Yea, I guess you're right about the lack of funds for upkeep for an Rx-7. *sigh* I used to have a '95 civic, with some suspension work, and I was working on a turbo project (thus the name, for a sleeper d-series turbo), I may pick that back up. I'd have to look around at some civics, because I really wanted to step away from them. They're just so...generic. You see one everyday, everywhere.

But seriously....You're starting to rekindle my ideas for that Pre-96 civic. Maybe see about getting it with a swap and built the engine to rev, or just turbo the D. Hmm............. AND BIKE!

i would go with b, if you're set on getting a RX-7. you could prob find a car that is fun, reliable, and fun to modify though, and spend less(save some). if you want a bike you should prob hold off until next spring. if you bought a bike now, you would just be getting comfortable on it when you had to garage it for the winter.

Honestly I own 2 pretty high Horsepower cars and well, if I could do it again, I'd get a 95civic with a nice and clean interior and kick a** suspention with small light weight wheels and have huge ammounts of fun. Horse power is overrated...

my best advice is Live within your means and make some fun out of it. it's all in the perspective you take... Civic + bike ftw.

That is some of the best advice I have seen typed on this forum all week.

My opinion would be buy a nice dependable dd for mountain driving/daily driving. Get an older Honda, Nissan, or Toyota. Preferably Toyota or Honda. Accords like mine can be had for as low as $500 with as little as 100k on em, and when lowered with the proper suspension can be evil in the mountains. On pretty much stock suspension in an automatic, I can do some damage! After that I would get the Bike as well. Later on worry about buying more cars, or a more luxurious/faster car. I would also save some money, because you never know what life can throw at ya.

I personally wouldn't get a rotary car for a first ride. They are kind of tempermental. Get an older supra, 180/240, if you want a rwd car that has good potential and reliability

/\ Definitely a good idea. And I have two forms of transportation thank-you. It all just depends on how fast I want to get to where I'm going. When I have all the time in the world, I rock the Shell-toe classics, and if I'm in a rush its the Celars.

If you want a small RWD Mazda, why not get a Miata? They are very reliable for daily driving and fun to drive too.

put the money in a high interest account, come back in 10 years and buy something really nice. If you have $15000, and you add $2000 a year, at 7% interest (may be hard to find, but its possible) you could have $60000 in 10 years.

Find an FD with a recently re-built engine, DD it, and be a good rotary owner (a rotary is as reliable as it's owner, it's not the engine's fault) keep her full of oil, warm up until you are 1/2 way between cold and the normal driving temperture, and cool down for 1 and 1/2 minutes after driving, and finally redline at least once every 2 months to clean out carbon buildup on the rotor edges (should be no problem, I redline mine about daily, she can take it no problem). I've drivin my FC for a solid 2 years with the only problem being a broken power window switch. Enjoy :)

exactly, and especially if you can pay for it all at once. Then you can have some time to quietly amass power mods, while at the same time any small asthetic mods can easily go on as soon as you get them. if you stay on top of the maintainence, you can DD this until you start making enough money to buy or lease a DD and start doing crazy stuff to the FD.

which, after being adjusted for inflation, amy only be worth something like $35k in today dollars. the high intrest account trick only works if you start with an obscene amount of money to begin with or you let it sit for 35 years.
