I've got to admit - I did not think that it would take off that easily. You get to learn something everyday.
I did not vote, but definately still got the answer wrong.
I missed the episode. Did it take off?

From Bimmerforums, lolol...
They gave the belt 25mph ground speed.
But they gave the plane 50mph ground speed (in relation to the belt), or 25mph airspeed.
So obviously, if the plane moves faster than the conveyor belt, it will move forward, get lift, and fly.
Where is the whole "matching speeds" thing that they agreed to do? They should have given both the plane and the belt 25mph ground speed, which would make the plane stay still, as a person would on a treadmill. This would entail cutting back on the throttle as soon as the plane started to move forward, but that is what they said they were going to do...match speeds.*sigh*

^^Lol. They did it fair and square. The plane easily took off and i doubt it would've mattered even it had been going a little slower than the conveyor belt. They clearly proved it's possible.

They clearly proved it's possible. The conveyor could be going 75mph and the plane 25mph and it would still take off, the only differance is the wheels of the plane would be spinning at 100mph

if the plane had a speed of 50 mph in relation to the belt, doesnt that mean its moving at an actual speed of 25 mph in one direction and the conveyor(tarp) at a speed of 25 in the other, that looks like matching speeds to me

but the plane was supposed to stay stationary on the "treadmill" while its wheels spun freely. when i watched it the plane moved foward. idk but it looked like that to me. if the plane moves foward at all it defeatsthe purpose of the test. am i not right?

The conveyor and planes speeds were match! If the plane isn't going anywhere then how fast is the conveyor belt moving? 0mph!! ZERO MPH!

Most people can only relate to cars or people and can't grasp the idea of a planes power not going to it's wheels.

no i understood that the power is not at the wheels, hints the reason for props/jets :)
