View Full Version : Issues with the EF

I recently recieved my head back from the machine shop with my new Supertech valves installed with Viton stem seals. Bought a new timing belt, put it on along with a new water pump, front main seal and cam seals.

I'm having the weirdest problem however, when my car is cold (overnight, or bringing it home from work at the end of the day) it runs like a dream. Quick, responsive on the throttle and performs well.

However, after a few minutes of running the engine looses power and bogs down, occasionally stalls itself out. It is responsive at anything over 3200rpm when it gets like this, but gets worse the longer i drive it. Noticing how this issue seems to correspond in relation to the engine temp. I'm assuming it most likely has something to do with the ignition system. (the ECU retards ignition timing as the engine warms up if I"m correct)

- I made 100% sure that the timing is dead on accurate, and the belt has the correct tension on it. And rechecked it while on my way home from work today (pulled over in a gas station, busted out the small tool kit i have in my car and went to town.)

- Distributor is in the EXACT same position it was in when i removed it. (marked the location with a scribe before removal)

- Spark plugs are not fouled out, brand new Densos went in this head as well.

- Correct stock fuel pressure (42-45psi)

CEL puts up a code of 23 (VSS, which has been there for a while. Still working on the S2k cluster conversion)

I'm almost at a loss. I do not have a ignition light handy however, so i cannot verify spark is occuring at exactly cylinder TDC.

Ideas?

you may need tuning.

you may need tuning.

It's possible, however, i chose the standard sized dished valves instead of the flat faced JUST for that reason. I didn't want to bump it up over 12.8 (where it's already at)

Which is another reason i need to get my hands on that conversion harness there champ. :D lol

Seriously, dont stress on these chicks!!! You're still pretty young and have a lot to learn. I'll teach you the game one day.

oh yea, and jonathan, that **** didn't work. gave her flowers AND wrote her a poem...

what did she say you ask?

exactly what i said she was gonna say... "it seems like you're just doing this because you know i'm mad and u want to make me happy"

so jonathan, i think it's gonna be a loooong time when you're right 5 times.

nope, i was right. I told you she'd say that when you gave her those.

But what i also told you was that whether she let you know or not, she'd appreciate it.

yes she did, she just told you she was pissed. And I would be willing to bet big money that when her mom asked her where she got the flowers from, you got a couple brownie points.

girls are stupider than they think.

jonathan, i talked to her this morning and she said she liked the flowers and the poem, but just didn't like them at first...

You should just date my gf, cause you seem to know how shes gonna react to every situation...lol

so, is that 2 or 3 for you?
