Just picked this up today. As u all can see from the picts... I have a few things to take care of before she is running. It's a 1991 (not 93) Toyota MR2 N/A with the 2nd Gen JDM 3SGTE Clip. The car belonged to Tank as a project car and so far it has Border sides and rear molded.... front bumper is molded too and i am not so sure about it yet. It has Custom flush mounted headlights, new Champ white paint, and the clip. Once i get it cleaned up and put back together it will be taken to AAP Motorsports where they will run the electricals... Wiring harness mainly. As far as everything else that is done to the car.... you'll just have to wait and see :D

Once i got it home I pulled out everything that was just lying in the car. I wanted to see what all was missing and broken.

as far as wiring goes i wouldn't let any shops touch that.....unless there installing a standalone....

i have someone that could do your wiring for you and it would be cheaper than going to the shop.

Nice car.....i like the headlights but i would run diff sides and rear.

10-11-2007, 02:44 PM
lol yeah it did.... after i pulled all of the junk out and cleaned it up a bit last night i felt much better about the buy. It's definatly a project but an easy one at that. only concern i have is the fact it has been sitting for awhile. The fact it's been sitting doesnt bother me because there are no fluids in the car.... but im wondering how much water has been dumped on the motor from rain. The car was under a canopy but still... never know. I'll find out next week though. Im gonna take it up to AAP and drop it off and have them do whatever needs to be done to get it running and running strong

Oversteer>Understeer imho

ok agreed to a point, but do you really want it that much in a mid engine layout car. They wouldn't have changed the suspension design in the 93's if it wasn't such an issue. Plus its much harder to control and can be unpredictable, especially if your a first time owner.

Alan®
10-11-2007, 08:53 PM
yes if your a first time owner and have no idea how to control rear wheel drive cars in oversteer but with a halfway decent driver oversteer>understeer still.

Chris since you me and Tank are the only people that know anything about this car i will show people why in the end this car will kick ass.

For $3k Chris got a DEAL!!!!!

91 MR2 non turbo(saving money already on insurance)
Phoenix Power front end $1600
Border Sides and Rear $1300 -*Right Here You Just Broke Even*
Paint and Install-? say $1500
JDM Gen 2 3s-GTE Motor-it came from a whole clip so say $4500

Total:$8900
Savings:5900

Of course this still doesnt include the money saved from pulling the na motor and tranny putting the new motor and trany in along with swapping the fuel pumps. Yes Chris has some work ahead of him but there is no way in hell it costs $6k to get the car up and running especially if he knocks out a good bit of it before handing over the car to AAP. If and its a lil bit of a big if he has all the parts to complete the swap so that when the car goes to AAP/R2B2 all they have to do is wire the motor put in the new fluids and install an exhaust Chris is looking at tops $1000. Nice set of wheels and some suspension tweaking and he has one sick car to start with.

so, you're basically saying a mid engine car layout handles the same as a front engine rwd layout? :screwy: :???:

ignorance is bliss. It doesn't matter if you show people why the car is gonna kick ass. Someone will still find something negative to say. I'm not hating, but you can't argue with me on that.

No i'm simply stating though that with a halfway decent driver that oversteer in ANY layout is better than understeer.

You are absolutely right someone will always find something wrong or something to hate about. hopefully what i said above though will abate some of that. Almost no denying though that Chris is going to come out ahead.

Cleaned up all of the trim and interior moldings today. Sprayed the interior panels that were once red back to black. Shampoo'd the carpet and seats. Tried to fit my EP3 seats but they were to tall. The Avic D2 is gonna fit nicely in there so im not going to sell that.

The JDM spoiler is still being painted. I gotta order new tail lights, headlights, corners, exhaust, a battery, engine scoops, and a few other things for starters. taking it to AAP on monday.

Here are some profile shots of the car....

TKO? or greddy PE ?

its a gen 2 so ct26

i know that but what turbo did it put on there?? cause i had a gen 2 and i put on a ct-20b turbo on it.. and usdm comes with ct-26. ct-26 = crap.

it doesnt make any good numbers out unless you go with the 20b or the ct-27 + mods

Thats the EMS Exhaust...

not sure about the turbo.... i don't know alot about the MR2's yet. I just knows its a 2nd Gen JDM 3SGTE. is the ct-20b the celica turbo i hear that bolts right up???

jdm91t
10-16-2007, 12:17 AM
The 3rd gen 3s powered celica and mr2 had it. The CT-20B isn't the real name of the turbo, its kinda a slang term the mr2 community uses to separate the 2nd gen 3sgte turbo from the 3rd gen turbo. The turbo comes on 3rd gen 3sgte engines and has a ceramic wheel and better intake and exhaust housings than the 2nd gen ct-26. it also has one more bolt(7 I think) in the exhaust housing where it bolts to the downpipe and just says toyota on the intake, instead of toyota ct-26. The real ct-20b is actually a turbo off some 80's truck and does not bolt to the mr2, but everyone refers to the 3rd gen ct-26 as the ct-20b so oh well. Just be careful when your shopping for one. The car looks great, I'm more of a fan of the stock bodied mr2's but you found a good deal. make sure to get on mr2board.com and mr2.com, I have the same name on both so look me up if you need something, I have a couple spare parts laying around. Also look up the Berk technology exhaust, its very similar to the one you posted and I have and love it, great price on them too.

©hris
10-18-2007, 10:55 AM
There are a lot of Turbo Upgrade options to go with. Depending on which kit and how much im gonna spend on it the kits come with Injectors, fuel pump, turbo, manifold, etc...

I have a HKS SSQ BOV i need to pick up and about to get the Greddy Emanage Ultimate EMS maybe this weekend.

Im shooting for around 300hp/280tq before next summer.

Stock the JDM gen2 comes with 225/200 and runs between 13.5-14.0 1/4mi depending on the conditions and driver.

©hris
10-18-2007, 11:22 AM
yeah i have been doing some homework on these things and there is a lot of cool things to buy....

First project will be Cooling... there are lots of cool ways to modify the MR2 for better cooling.

1st thing will be to get a CF Vented hood and angle the radiator back... im looking for a diagram or photo of this done. It is very effective if done right with custom sheet metal cut to create a Tunnel where the air goes into the front air dam then forced upward through the radiator and up and over the hood creating downforce as well....

only downside i heard that it severly affects the handling.

id just try to get it running first. WIthout knowing the complete condition of the motor, wiring , sensors, etc you may be in for a long haul.

Youll also need to drain the gas if it has sat that long

Alan®
10-18-2007, 11:44 AM
if i remember correctly thats already done. but heres what i'm going to guess needs be done.

Motor mounts installed
wiring harness done
guage cluster will need some work becuase if i remember right the 91 is a mechanical and the 93 is electronic
exhaust
new belts hoses clamps
fluids
fuel system flush
clutch cable
throtle cable
brake system

cant think of anything else but when i went to go look at it thats what was what all i saw needed to be done. tank got the hard part of the swap done. got the motor in and swapped out the fuel pumps so chris has got a pretty good starting platform AAP will finish it and get it running in know time. Chris I gotta find the site but you dont necessarily need that emanage to get up around 300 whp i have a site that was really meant for the gen 3 swap but if swap the turbo and injectors you will already have a nice lil bump on your way to 300

©hris
10-18-2007, 11:49 AM
AAP/R2B2 has it right now. They are finishing the swap. The engine has sat for about a year with NO fluids in it what so ever. They said its about 6-8 hours in labor and i believe they started on it today. should be done by monday or tuesday.

I basicly told them that when i pick the car up i want a strong running daily drivable car. I told them to make sure all of the lights work, compression is good, A/F is good, plugs, wires, distributer, etc...

They reconnecting the A/C lines, Fuel hose to fuel tank, battery, wiring harness, front motor mounts, removing N/A exhaust, few dyno pulls, yada yada....

im going to drive it for a good month before I start adding mods to the engine. want to make sure its going to be reliable first

Vteckidd
10-18-2007, 11:52 AM

intake
exhaust
boost controller
ats throttle inlet

then
intercooler
turbo upgrade

then
walbro fuel pump
standalone
wolfkatz fuel rail
injectors
264 cams

after you do the intake, exhaust, and boost controller mods, the best mod after that is the intercooler mod. I really like the spearco intercooler and it makes a big difference in performance on the stock ct26 turbo

why not use an AFC for anything under 300whp? ive never seen a problem with them on other cars.

anything over 275-300, id gop straight to a powerFC or AEM

mrcontrols guide says you can tweak it a little with the afc since mr2 come factory running rich as he11, the few added ponies in my opinion are not worth spending all that money. Gen 2s I believe are known for popping when the afc is installed and this is with a good tuner.

I rather you get a greddy emange, I have atleast seen a few ppl make 400 without any problems so far.

and as far as what everone else is telling me....

only mods im doing to the motor for starters is DP, exhaust, intake and cooling upgrades.... then just gonna save up for a Street brawler kit or Greddy turbo kit.... Tiger do u have a 3rd gen swap or 2nd gen???

i'd like to just get around 280-300whp

The stock ECU will add lots of timing when you tweak the tune via the SAFC. There have been a few successes, but many, many bad endings.

My path to what he is looking for, power wise is:

ATS CT27 Turbo
ATS Cam Gears
ATS ROM Tuned ECU
ATS Bored out fuel rail
ATS modified fuel pressure regulator
HKS 264/256 Cams
KO Racing TKO 2.5" Exhaust w/7" Cans
KO Racing DP
Blitz SBC-iD Boost Controller
Apex-i Intake
SPEC Stage II Clutch

Dyno'd @ 260 rwhp (90 degrees air temp) @ 15 psi

I had an ST205 A2W IC ready to install, and was planning on running at 17 psi which was expected to yield ~280rwhp.

This would be a safe and reliable setup.

Do it right. Don't use SAFC.

No problem with the ROM tune. I worked it out with ATS and they sent me out a base tune. I dyno'd the car and sent them the info. They tweaked the tune and sent me a new chip. This was all included in the initial cost.

I know u guys are gonna think this was dumb but....

i ordered 3" dual exhaust that looks a lot like the TKO. I don't have exhaust and have already spent more money than i have on buying the car, getting it running and making it able to be Daily driven...

So i ran accross XS Power Dual Exhaust (SSAutoChrome) and ordered it.... $220 shipped! Thats 1/4th of the cost of the TKO but i just needed something so i dont get pulled over.

Am i gonna regret buying this exhaust??? lol

It's gonna be loud. The smaller the cans, the louder the exhaust. I liked the 7" cans on the TKO because it was slightly louder than stock (although a lot lower tone) at idle, but screamed when @ WOT.

nothing wrong with an ss autochrome exhaust. not much for them to **** up. ppl run those exhausts in the 240 world and for the buy they say it is great. only thing to worry about is fitment but SSAC has been better on QC from what i hear.

DO NOT BUY turbos, BOVs, cams, wastegates, injectors from them. anything that has working parts inside or a very vital part of your motor is not a good move.

Im so ****ing sick of this ****. its been there for 3 ****ing months and i have less than 25 hours of labor on my invoice..... 3 months is 480 business hours. The ****ing car is done with the exception of an intake pipe and need to put the ****ing wheels back on the car. I went up there today and the OWNER showed up late to work.... not to mention he left early friday so the car hasnt been touched. HE TELLS ME TO CALL BACK THIS AFTERNOON.... I CALLED BACK AT 3:30-4:00 AND HE ****ING LEFT FOR THE DAY!!!

IF TUNING IS ALL THATS LEFT.... I'LL TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE.

ran into a problem.... i gotta Mapped ECU and there is a problem somewhere in the wiring.... ECU is saying its at 7000rpms at idle... and its not.... soooooo Travis (is back from recovery from his accident) is troubleshooting it now and the car cannot be tuned until its fixed..... thats about it. so now im looking at monday for pickup unless he finds the problem real real soon

Another day goes by.... Alternator is bad.

not sure what they are tuning it with. Tomorrow should be the big day as long as nothing else goes wrong..... with my luck, likely it will blow up.
