Racing question.. kinda

i've noticed in drag and circuit racing, that some cars put an X with tape on there head lights, why is that ??:???:

you're supposed to tape off lights/glass so that if they break, it's easier to clean and supposed to keep them from falling off the car at things like track days and autox events, then a lot of people started doing just the little X's and riding like that all the time.
