i dont agree with that, i have a pretty good grasp on the spanish language, but when asked i will always say that i dont speak it, it is not my responsibility to speak a language that is not an official language of a country that i have been born and raised in

just as i would not expect to go to another country and them speak english

are you bilingual?

BobbyFresco

are you bilingual?

Yes. I'm Panamanian so I speak Spanish and I am also fluent in French....
My first language was definitely not English...

I understand your point but at the same time, we live in a global world/ market....
There is so much money to be made from being able to speak another language and we shouldn't close ourselves to personal growth anyway...

I lived in Panama for the first 8 years of my life and I can remember us having English classes as early as first grade.

This alone just shows the diff between our educational system here in comparison to those of other countries.

and this shit should be moved to the WL.

^ you are proving the point of the picture by saying people should be bilingual.

Other countries teach English......why do you think?

good point, there is no doubt our educational system is lacking. (although i began learning spanish when i was around 5 at the daycare i was attending, and continued on through the gifted programs at the public schools i attended, and took french and spanish in highschool) there is potentially a lot to be gained from being multilingual, but not for an every day person like me, i come face to face w/ people who have been in this country for atleast 5+ years and still cant speak a lick of english, i cant fault people for wanting a better life, but i can fault people for not adapting to the place that is providing that better life. i dont expect people to come over speaking english, i expect people to come over and atleast put forth effort to speak the language that the majority of the population uses on a daily basis....if/when spanish becomes a national language for us then i will make a concerted effort to gain a full grasp of the spanish language...until then i will still continue to use my broken spanish....and personally i will begin teaching my son spanish as well when i feel the time is necessary, b/c there is no doubt in my mind that a person who is bilingual has more opportunities work wise than most

how is it racist.. its true.. you go to a country, learn the language.. when i came here i barely spoke english..

Its true in a way but stupid that us americans have to get mad at foreigners that don't know much english b/c they have their own language. Given that they can understand most of the time, but can't speak back. Now i've been to many countries around the world and couldn't speak a lick of any of their languages but yet they can speak ours in their own country. English is the primary language in this world but don't hate b/c foreigners got skills and can speak two or more languages than your ignorant ass. (not directed to anybody)

I don't think we frown upon being bilingual. We frown upon not making the effort to learn English in an English speaking country.

God forbid you have to learn something new that may serve a purpose one day....

Same goes for those that come to this country and don't make an effort to learn the language of this country.

I learned a bit about this in a linguistics intro course (that makes me a fucking expert on this subject, of course) and there are some obstacles to learning a second language in another country, for example, learning a new language while working, let's say, a labor job (which requires minimal language), is hard.

So you agree immigrants coming in to this country shouldn't close themselves to personal growth by making an effort to learn English if given the chance. I don't know what it is now, but I started learning Spanish in middle school (Ga public school), so I don't think our foreign language programs here are totally inadequate in that aspect.

I have absolutely no problem with speaking another language. You can speak any language you want here in America as long as you are a legal immigrant. Now as far as damn illegal immigrants expecting something from this country where they don't pay taxes , they can shove that shit right back up their asses.

the guy is prob racist, but i agree somewhat. it does suck having to deal with people that have lived here for ages and still don't speak english. i moved here and learned english in about half a year, not the best english but at least i could communicate. but i guess it goes both ways since americans think its just normal to speak english everywhere. yes, in most european countries if you speak english you will be able to communicate just fine with 70% of the people there. i just think america is behind with the education of teaching students a second language. my cousin in germany can speak better english than half of the people in the states. sad since he is only 14

not really try to hate on anyone, but there are a lot of imagrants coming in, are we supposed to know every lanuage of every country? why shouldm't the people moving here learn the native language? some people dont even try

it is not my responsibility to speak a language that is not an official language of a country that i have been born and raised in
so what language do you speak? none? cause you know that there is no official language in the US, right?

just as i would not expect to go to another country and them speak english
i agree, i would never goto a foreign country and expect them to speak english
