I have a SOHC ZC Vtec and my turbo is a turbonetics T3/T4 with a cold side of .63. Its doesnt hit full boost till about 4400rpm. It pulls hard when it boost though. I wanna better my 1/4 time. Should i go to a smaller turbo? Im running high 14's now with 6psi and no tuning on a stock motor.

Build the motor, sell the turbo, get a T25 and boost to 25psi, XD

not trying to be sarcastic (i'm looking into a doing d-series turbo setup myself) but what do you mean by no tuning, are you running a fmu instead? thanks.

a GT28R will be good for a SOHC

the right turbo for a d-series, is a really small one

the key ingredient here is the specs on the hot side.
trim, and clearance.
the trade off for tighter clearance (A/R ratio) is, faster spool time, but less maximum potential horsepower.
and the same can be said for trim, lower the number, the faster the overall spool because of less rotational inertia, but the less maximum potential.

Yeah thats what i thought. I love the big one and late spool for daily, but on the dragstrip i want faster spool. I think i will take a smaller turbo and change it out and try both mine and a smaller one.

Don't get anything too small. A T3 60 trim is a good match for the stock single cams. Good spool up, mid 3000 range, and still hold till redline.

A little lag for drag racing can be nice though. Too fast a spool and you're gonna be having traction problems at the start. A spool time of 4400 isn't that bad for drag racing, after 1st gear you will never be below that anyways. People normally want a faster spool for daily driving, since most daily driving is done below 4000 rpm and a fast spool means less down shifting.

I think the first thing you should do is go get your car tuned before dropping money into another turbo though. You'd probably see a drop in spool time, not to mention more power, from a good tune. Just a thought.

Correction...WILL

I got a turbonetics t3 for sale. Nice spool and powerband when I had it on my y8.

your turbo will be fine with some tuning. 4400 is actually some pretty good spool time. unless your using a cx trans you wont drop out of boost. get a real tune on it and your times will come down. up the boost till you get around the 220 mark.

I was gonna tune but my clutch is giving trouble now. Its stock but new and slipping when i shift fast. Might put my old in for import showdown. Thanks though.

Go with a 16g or t25 for the D-series.... I just let my friend borrow my turbo kit, he's got it on a LS hatch. he hits full boost(10psi right now) at 3500rpm...if the wastegate was set to 15psi it would hit that at 3500rpm as well.... I got the kit setup just right. It spools right up. Its a Mitsubishi 18g turbocharger on the kit

You could prolly have the one you got spool up quicker if you move down to a stg 1 turbine shaft

If you are not hitting until 4400 rpm, that sounds about like most of the drag turbos...what do you redline at with that engine? Most of the people I know dragging their cars are not spooling fully till 4000-4800 rpm. But then they launch their car at those rpms....my best bet for a drag car would be to keep that turbo and spend the money upgrading the drive train so that you can launch the car.

there is nothing wrong with the turbo that you have all you need is a good tune.

you mean a hot side of .63 right?

I don't think turbonetics made .63 a/r compressors...

I have a turbonetics .63 ar turbine on my car stage 1 wheel can hit 15psi at around 3k (but I have a 2.6L though)

If you want something that will spool quicker and make a better DD, go with a smaller turbo. If you want an all out drag car, build the engine (or toss the engine and get something larger with DOHC) and get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. That turbo is kinda big for a D series. It would work on a B-series, but it would definitely need to be an engine that has been built to run a turbo if you want to see real power from the T3/T4.
