Let me start out by saying...
I HAVE THE WORST LUCK IN VEHICLES! it seems like every other week i've got a problem.. no matter what i'm driving!
got a 93 montero a couple weeks ago... was driving like a dream.. still drives fine...
BUT when i first start the vehicle and put it into drive or reverse...
the idle drops really low and it kinda sputters..... if i give it gas it dies... BUT....
... i can crank it right back up... give it a second.. give it a bit of gas while it's in park.. and then put it in drive/reverse and it goes back to driving like a dream....
makes no sense to me...
but i'm thinking, fuel filter/fuel pump/injectors... something in that area...
what do ya'll think?

not yet... i def plan on doing so in the next few weeks... don't quite have the funds to at the time... but i plan on taking it in next pay check and getting a tune up/check up.

yeah, the older stuff is sketchy.. but i know someone with a montero... his has ran forever...
i'll prolly just end up "getting the wrenches out" this weekend and going to work... i hate having to learn a new engine!
then again, it's prolly best to learn as much as possible..

Buying a '93 Montero was your first mistake :lmfao: The drivetrains are solid on them and the transmissions are ok. That about wraps it up. The problem you might be having is carbon build up in the intake manifold which is contributing to your idle issues. I'd pull out those wrenches and pull the throttle body off, clean out the passages with an old toothbrush and carb cleaner. When you have the throttle body off, turn it around and look at where the idle adjust screw goes. Make sure that hole isn't plugged with carbon. Make sure you get very thorough with that toothbrush when cleaning the TB as well. It reduces turbulence when it's nice and clean

it only idles weird when i first put it into gear though... wouldn't that cause to idle strange anytime i'm not giving it gas?

I definately agree with doing a fuel induction service on the car and cleaning out all the shit.
those motors hereditarily have problems with the cylinders ovaling causing excessive blow by. i know you've probably seen a couple unlucky fuckers on the road with montero's that smoke like a son of a bitch, well that's why lol.
it definately wouldn't hurt to do a tune up on the thing.
start with a fuel induction service aka run-rite, lucas, sea foam, run some of that shit through the motor for 15 minutes and see if that helped any. if that didn't help any i'm leaning towards an egr valve sticking, which would produce a vacuum leak. but honestly i bet cleaning the crap out of your intake and putting some new plugs should clear it up. good luck

.... WHORESELOUNGE.............. ------------------------------>
anyways.. i think i found the problem... i was gonna check my spark plugs and the the plug wire is screwed...
the metal connector inside completely came out of the plug wire boot... now i've seen that before on other vehicles... BUT this was differen't...
it looked like the previous owner had noticed it cut the "boot" that the connector is inside of.. tried to fix it.. and taped up the boot.... there is no way to just pop it back in either....
Killer
09-15-2007, 02:48 PM
well replaced the cap, wires, and plugs.... still the same problem.... :( but that needed to be done anyway so...
i think it might be the fuel filter.... but to be honest i can't even find it... it's near the gas tank somewhere as opposed to under the hood... i bought a haynes so i'm just gonna get to reading and see what i can figure out...
