aight, so I'm thinkin about gettin a rifle. not lookin at anything expensive, all I really plan on doin it goin out and doin some target shooting, etc etc. so I went to a few local pawn shops and found a Springfield 30-30 for 200 bucks. looks in good condition. no rust or noticable wear on the barrell, the stock was in good condition, came with a 4x scope that was in good condition. i've been tryin to look up info online and can't find too much about 30-30s, or springfield 30-30's. anybody know anything about em?

30-30 are pretty good guns.. they are classic hunting guns.. nothing incredible... but not too shabby.... i've got one.. mine shot well.. without a scope... but mine isn't a springfield... mine is a winchester...

so check this out. the guy yesterday told me 200 for the gun. the price tag said 400 so I just went with it. went in today, there was a different guy, and the owner in. I told him that the guy yesterday said 200 for it, and the owner looked quite upset. he said though if that is what he told me, he would sell it to me for that price. So the owner calls the guy from yesterday up, and sure enough, he said 200. The owner was not a happy camper at all. so here it is, a Springfield Savage 840. 30-30 caliber. 9x Weaver scope. took it to a gun range today, and the scope is almost right on.

congrats. I was grew up in a gun-friendly household, so I've got loads of them, inherited from my dad and brother. My favorite hunting rifle caliber, personally, is either a .308 Win or a 7mm Mag. I've got several SKS', 2 AK's [semi, got a hellfire on one, though], miscellaneous handguns, blah blah. It's a long list, but, back to the point. Congrats on the purchase, shooting/hunting [whatever you plan on using it for] is fun and is also a great stress relief.

Looks like a Model 340 if I'm not mistaken. Although most 30-30's are lever action, bolt action rifles are usually slightly more accurate. I've shot tons of Lever action 30-30's. I have a buddy with a Marlin that he's hunted with for ages. Another buddy uses a Winchester to hunt as well.

It's a good caliber for GA woods because it shoots a really heavy bullet that doesn't deflect easily, hence why it's always referred to as a good brush gun. It doesn't kick too much but will put down deer size game rather easily. Most people talk about it not having too much range, but that's only when you compare it to big boys like .30-06 or 7 mag. For regular deer hunting around here, the 30-30 is plenty good to get the job done. It's no urban warfare gun or Desert varmit gun though.

It's a great starter caliber that works good for most situations you should use it for. Be aware that Savage is known for having certain flaws, but if it shoots well now and you don't abuse it you should do fine.

Good luck and I hope that helped. :goodjob:

If your goal with the gun is accuracy then you should do some tune up work on it. First thing would be to clean it real good and make sure there isn't any debris in the rifling in the barrel. Just buy rifle gun cleaning supplies and follow the directions. Second is to make sure the barrel is "floating". Basically the barrel rotates around a little as the bullet goes through and if it hits the stock at all it will throw accuracy off. To test this just take a dollar bill loop it under the barrel and run it down towards the action to see if it gets stuck. Also to make it easier to shoot you might want to lighten the trigger so you don't have to pull it as much as rest your finger on it. To keep it accurate don't shoot it more than a few times every half hour to keep the barrel cool. And if you want to get really really accurate then you need to start working on running reloads through the gun. Reloaded bullets if fired in the same position over and over can greatly increase accuracy. We do all this with our hunting rifles and can put 4 in a nickel at 200 yards on the range with no problems.

so why were u guessing it was a 340? lol

Because the price was so low that typically that would coincide with the 340 vs the 840.

But either way, have fun with you new rifle.
