View Full Version : An Amazing Moment at the Airport today

chrisdavis

I had to take my Mother-in-law to the airport this afternoon. While we said our goodbyes, there was an eruption of applause that went on for minutes in the atrium. As we went through the atrium to leave there was still applause (it was almost deafening), I looked around to see what the fuss was about and on the second floor of the atrium was a group of soldiers coming home, and another group heading for thier flights. It was a very surreal moment(very emotional). My wife said had she not been crying from telling her mother goodbye that it would have made her cry.

I notice you are in the air force... but I guess you are doing it just cause it's a job... but alot of military men and woman take lil more pride in there "work" for there country. And thats why people applaud them for it.

all im saying is people need to realize. We do it becuase we want to. I dont know about everyone else, but when people say thank you, i ask them for what. I wanted to do somethign for my country, this is what i did. I work with a rescue unit that refuels helicopters in flight when they go in for downed pilots. It is a job, we know the risks going into the entire ordeal. We are no more of a hero, special, or anythign than the guy down the road directing traffic for little children.

dude its cool it hits home for me b/c it would kill me if anything happened to any of my family over in Iraq or Korea. It is a job to a certain extent but if it werent for people like you people's family members would still be there waiting and or dieing. The thank yous are more or less an easy way of saying that we are proud of you and all of the other military personel that are busting their butts for us.

But that's amazing!! I would have cried and just grin ear to ear. I mean these soldiers have been gone for a while and to come home to their families is priceless. I can't imagine them comming off the plane and their kids and families waiting anxiously for their arrival!! I'm tearing just thinking of it. My friend has been over (for his 2nd time as a marine) since January. And will hopefully return September. And has a 3yr. old son. And the last time he talkd to his dad he was saying "when are you coming home daddy?" and "I miss you daddy. and "I love you daddy" Thought was soo sweet. Sorry for blabbering, thought I would tell you of another experience. ~God bless our brave soldiers~

And those braclets do nothing for anyone. *most of hte time *the proceeds dont go anywhere. Its just people trying to make money off of peopel that care. It would mean more if you made your own to someone honestly. I know a few places used to sell the magnetic ribbons ffor your car, the proceeds went to hel troops overseas with phone cards, books and magazines. We got a big box of phone cards while i was over there. really cool stuff.

i disagree tsi spyder.. if i recall, the airforce got HAZARDOUS pay for being on my naval base because it was a NAVAL base that also housed MARINES. what kinda shit is that? AF to me is civilians with cammies on. army, marines and navy personell are the working boys of the services and just going from loving your wife and kids to fight or send off warbirds from a flight deck that is 130+/- degrees on the other side of the planet 4k away isnt just a job to me.

YokotaS13
07-18-2005, 01:48 PM
so i guess my working 4k miles away in support of OEF roughly 80 hrs a week isnt anythign crazy huh? Or that we get hazard pay for doin the same shit marines are doing while we were there.

If you think the AF is that easy come work with me for a week. Ill change your mind.

07-18-2005, 01:57 PM
you know...for some reason the AF stayed separate from us navy/marine guys.....they said we were too rough. what do you do in the AF?
i did avionics and no it wasnt just a job to me cause they way we were made to look at it, if i fucked up on a radar, gps system, radio, gyroscope, or any sensitive piece of electronics, that meant a pilot didnt make it home.
where in japan are you going ? to OKI ?

Well to tell the truth yes it is a job and we know the fate of War when we sign up. Oddly enough the ones who do most of the actual killing or lose comrades bc of it..think of it as a job as well..Here i see some harcore hooah killin muthafuckers. Im not reffferin to uniform personal im talkin bout the ones that grow a beard and go in and go out with no questions and those are the ones that are coming home under a flag. The ones that are coming through commercial airports are most likely personel who dont come close to the line and arent in as much as danger. Im not saying they dont deserve the same applause as anyone who does but jus bc they are in DCUs and "went to war" doesnt mean they are killers. MANY MANY MANY men and women of our arm forces are downrange as this very moment listenin to mortars flying by as they watch the nite sky, but sadly the ones that are watching the guys launchin the mortars will never be able to be applauded so publicly bc they will not be known to the public.

This is actually NOT a dumbass comment. But I do disagree. I don't care if you are or are not on the front lines or really get out to battle. You signed up knowing it could happen---bravery and courage. Even if you went over, every single person in the Armed Forces has a job to do to ensure all parts of this Nation are safe and secure. Therefore, every single person in the Armed Forces, to me anyways, is a hero. Later, QD.

My grandfather, who raised me, was at Normandy on D-Day. He piloted the (I think it's called) amphibian boats. Troop transports. The boats that carried troops from ship to shore. He was all in the mix of that shit. I was looking at pictures yesterday of my grandmother's brother who died that die. His flag-draped coffin being carried out the church. From listening to him and other relatives from then, I know a little how things are/were. Later, QD.

Yep , we had to do that while we were there, Its a new thing when you have 3 steel coffins (not wood, these things looking like storage boxes) with an american flag held on by white 550 cord being loaded off the back of your plane, and carried through a formation with an entire row of people saluting them as they pass.
