View Full Version : Royal purple oil...
Is this stuff really as good as people say it is? I've been using mobil 1 synthetic for as long as I can remember but i'm debating on switching over if it's worth it. Anybody have experience with this stuff?

Best oil on the planet if you ask me. If you've ever looked at a RP bottom end at dissaembly, u can eat off it. I will never run another oil. I also use their gear/tranny oil as well. Well worth the extra bucks. I usually get it by the case online - but Pep Boys does carry it.

royal purple is very good oil, but as long as you change it frequently, running any full synthetic will be fine. i personally use castrol syntec. fyi, mobil 1 5w30 starts to lose is viscosity after about 2000 miles and is known for burning off more than other oils. there is a thread somewhere on TI about it.
I use it in every hole I can put it in in my car! Great stuff a friend just turned me on to it a while back and it's pricey but worth it! Great on high mileage engines too.
RP is a good oil, but it is more for a race application. It doesn't hold up as well after 2000 miles.
AMSOIL is usually rated the best from what I see, but F-Body guys like me absolutely LOVE 0w-30 European Formulation of Castole Syntec.
From oil analysis reports, it has the least amount of wear in iron and others.

I love the stuff, though Id reccomend RP in only high performance applications. Unless your packing forced induction or high compression, your really just wasting big $$$.
im sticking to mobile 1 synthetic.. 0-w40

Enlighten us on how one would be be "wasting" big money. Not like you buy the oil and then pour it down the sink.

Ditto. How the hell do you consider buying high quality products such as oils for your car, as wasting money unless its High Performance. You sir just made the dumbest statement of the thread.
RP is the shit. It's all I run in my CRX. Also all I will run. I usually change it at about 2500-3000K. Man I just love wasting money. Nah, i'm just anal about it lol.

My engine head is extremely clean for some ought reason. There's no nasty black gunk or anything. Odd mine has 85,000 mile and it run strong,....just the tranny is going out.
Mobil 1 Syntheic 5w-40 or Amsoil.

Its not the sorta stuff you pour into a dodge caravan, and expect a return on your 40$ per oil change investment.
To put it another way;
You wouldnt fill up a D15 with premium and load it up with outlaw octane booster, would ya?...

Redline is still better than Royal Purple... but Royal Purple has better properties than Mobil 1. I actually stopped using Mobil 1 on my S2000. My car by design burns oil when you really get on it. The problem with Mobil 1 is its so thin that it would leave oil all over my back bumper. I switched to Castrol Syntec and no more problems like that.
My point, Mobil 1 isn't all cracked up to be anymore since they changed their formula over the years.

I change my own oil - lol. So not sure where you're getting $40 per change in unless you're talking about the oil. If you do the math on how far you CAN push RP, then it balances out on the price per quart. Also, I protect my DD just as I do my street-fighters. If I am paying for it, then I want the best in there. Every vehicle I own gets RP.

I didn't like it, it broke down after like 3000 miles (not to mention it cost more). I switched to mobil one and like it alot more.

Hmmm. 3k?? Highly improbable. What are your tolerances on the motor you were running? What weight oil and what time of year. Also - how many miles on this engine (to include mods).

That stuff costs too much, I just stick with whatever cheapest Synthetic Blend I can find (Castrol GTX & Valvoline Dura-Blend) but then I went to Wally World & saw some of their "Super Tech Full Synthetic" for a little cheaper then other synthetic blends so I bought some. Haven't used it though, but I burn 1 QT/1K miles so no point in using super expensive oil.

I used to run Mobil 1 in the car but had read about them changing their chemical makeup in their oil and losing tier IV oil status so I swapped to Royal Purple, 2 weeks later I spun a bearing, very probably due to the oil overheating on the interstate.
I'm running Redline now, I've heard good things about Amsoil and Motul also. I'm going to send out an oil analysis with the Redline and then try Motul when I get my next oil change and get that oil analyzed and see which one my motor likes more.

im sticking to mobile 1 synthetic.. 0-w40Mobil 1 DOES NOT make a full synthetic and haven't in years, none of the major oil companies do -- sorry they forgot to tell the public when they switched the formula to a conventional crude oil mix. Group III oils cost half as much to produce yet the price on "synthetic" still remained the same or even went up.
FYI "Full synthetic" does not mean it is indeed fully synthetic....legally they can call it full synthetic if it has similiar properties even though it's made with crude base oil. Kinda like saying a certain brand of OJ is 100% juice because it looks and tastes similiar...but really half the incredients are 10 or 15 letters long and isn't an orange tree bi-product ;)

sorry to be the dumb ass of the thread but i used RP 5w 30 on my car and it ran like a dream but it was drinking the oil so i switch to 10w 30 and it ran even better and after that i never needed to add oil in it again but i change my oil every 2500 just cause i push the hell out the car every day my point is flush your engine with engine cleaner then switch your oil and make notes on what you like better

fuck that, i run 10w 30 advaned auto brand in a d15 with a built b18 2.1 in the garage awaiting a tranny, i feel no need to use either! but i used Castrol GTX 10w30 in the built motor when it was in my old DC2. had no problem myself.

Get your oil analyzed to see how many contaminants are really in it by the time you change it.
Subaru of America just released a list of the only synthetic oils they recommend on newer subarus. Here's what they listed:
Amsoil ASL High Performance 5w30
Amsoil XLF Extended Life 5w30
Castrol Syntec 5w30
Mobil1 5w30
Mobil1 Extended Performance 5w30
Pennzoil Platinum 5w30
Redline Synthetic 5w30
Valvoline SynPower 5w30
I'm convinced that 5w30 is just too thin for turbo cars in this heat so I'm running heavier 10w40. The eurospec Castrol Syntec 0w30 is supposed to be pretty good too.
