Paramount picture group drops blu-ray

LOS ANGELES - Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG announced Monday that they will offer next-generation DVDs in the HD DVD format rather than Blu-ray, a move that further complicates the race between the competing technologies.

The move by the two studios will include the upcoming blockbuster "Shrek the Third" and all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

"Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience," said Brad Grey, chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures. "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

The competition between Blu-ray and HD DVD has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.


Thats the report. and its validated. Also in the news today. confirmed that microsoft paid 150$mill to viacom *paramounts owners* to make paramount and thus dreamworks animation studio hd exclusively for 18 months. This tho excluded spielberg films as everytime spielberg makes a film he carries the rights to it for all time.

In response to this news, this occured this morning

The director behind such films as 'Bad Boys', 'Pearl Harbor', and the recent 'Transformers' movie is upset by Paramount's decision to drop support for Blu-ray. On a post on his personal web forum entitled, "Paramount pisses me off!", Michael Bay says, "I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!"

It appears the accountants who thought the $150M was a good deal didn't take into account that they would lose one of their star directors.

Good or bad move? for consumers? for the company? anyone got a take on this? Makes this war more interesting but damn 2 things would suck. first I may not get transformers on blu-ray.. and second.. whats going to happen to transformers 2... if they let speilberg direct it then paramount loses control over it..

Personally I agree/disagree... Blu-ray definitely looks better then HD DVD but the price is the killer. HD-DVD prices start at highend DVD prices Blu-ray is an avg of 10$ more when releases first started... most HD-DVD prices are between 14-24$ and Blu-ray is between 14-49$... I have a HUGE dvd collection and I am in no rush to move from DVD to any HD format. It is going to take obviously another year or two for a winner to be concluded. In the meantime consumers are gonna get screwed either way ;)

You could always get the Toshiba DVD Up-Converter. You can pick them up for about $100 all day. I have one. It reformats the DVD and plays them at a little bit less than 1080i. There is a big difference in picture, too. Later, QD.

HypnoToad, PS3 will also upconvert DVDs with one of the newer software upgrades.

Personally, I think that Paramount made a huge mistake. They have pretty much turned their backs on a lot of consumers, which is never a good thing. HD-DVD still won't win the format war, but now the battle will last a bit longer.

you would think so but blu-ray movies are out selling hd movies worldwide..
also go to dell. compaq.. hp.. nearly any comptuer site cept toshiba and "build" a pc and u can add a blu-ray burner but no HD burner.

Like i stated in an earlier post blu-ray is being highly adopted for data storage because they have a full working BD200 disc. Aka 200gb. At HD can't get their HD51 workin.. 51gb they have been trying for 2 years.

But its not about the name honestly.

VHS to DVD? they didnt go for SVHS.. or SDVHS.. super.. or super duper.. i know i made it up and it sounds stupid.. but they switched.

VP of marketing for waner bro's resigned last night. He was a key proponent inside warner for HD dvd and kept trying to push warner towards HD only. His resignation tho does not mean warner will go blu-ray only either. They stand firm on their TotalHD solution. Aka both systems.

Unconfirmed but repots from china are indicating a 199$ blu-ray player to hit walmarts shelfs for the holiday season as well as indications that walmart may only stock blu-ray hardware and no HD hardware at all other than the 360 add-on.

That walmart thing if confirmed would be the end of it honestly. Walmart/sams alone pushed vizio into the no. 1 selling lcd in the US. And vizio's PicQuality is pretty bad. But price and the fact that so many people just buy at walmart/sams did it. That would be pretty huge.

Also along with michael bay voicing his discontent over the decision sources close to steven speilberg said he is considering selling dreamworks animation studio's which he built up. Why not just leave? If SS just leaves paramount keeps the entire movie catalog. Except for those SS directed himself. If dreamworks is sold, SS keeps the entire movie catalog. Along with SS james cameron is apparently displeased as well.

Turns out this move could be a huge mistake for paramount.

In another turn, Weinstein, who brought you movies like grindhouse have showcased their next movie debut's in regular dvd and blu-ray only. Which is a switch as their previous release was in HD and regular only, not blu-ray.



Also to QD. Yeah the toshiba does a good job of upconverting. For those thinking the same thing be wary of other companies "up-converting" alot of companies use a brute force method and dont use a proper logic chipset for the conversion. Aka the toshiba one does a nice job but ones like the phillip's are just garbage.

Anywho just passing along new's being reported via various other forums if anyone's interested in this kinda thing.

LG and samsung is making one.

The lg is 1200 and the samsung 1k

but buy a 500$ blu-ray and a 300$ hd and u save money

also the problem is toshiba won't fully liscense a dual player so you will be able to play the HD movies but not utilize their advanced interactive system.

Good points all. not to forget that both Target and Blockbuster are aimed to support blue ray discs exclusively.

i think it is a huge mistake on Paramount's part, in not taking into account what the CONSUMER ultimately wants. The 'pay under the table' is the final insult, but may also show that blue ray keeps trending positive agains hd-dvd, and it may have been a desperate 'push' to keep the war going and try to keep the hd-dvd ship afloat.

I guess the war will be raging on for a bit longer... sigh...

yeah alot of the enthusiasts about this feel the same way. I would personally love to see blu-ray come out on top *which i also believe it will*

higher disc capacity.. higher bandwidth.. jsut makes more sense 5.. 10.. years down the road. Their already hitting the limit with HD. But hardest part is gonna get consumers to buy into either one. Best shot again is that walmart thing

We don't have 'HDMI In' on our receiver so we can't use the lossless 5.1 with the PS3. The Toshiba HDDVD player though, has analog out, which comes in handy. I really have no preference picture wise. Like someone said, HD is HD, is mainly just the audio tracks and if they're Uncompressed PCM tracks or not. The Blu Ray discs are bigger too so they can handle more audio, but until I can get the money up to invest in a reciever that can support HDMI in. That doesn't matter. I'll just stick with the HD-DVD's.
Paramount will soon realize that there is no sense in just making yourself exclusive to one format of the future of video. It'd be almost as if they're saying "We're going back to laser discs." They're shooting themselves in the foot.

actually half of the bd players support lossless pcm via analog output. so if your receiver can support that via input, or dts via analog it would still work. Cept not via the ps3 of course. But i know what ya mean. Its why im selling my camcorder. Picking up a new a/v receiver with full blown hdmi 1.3 support and other goodies.
