Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars", this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long-rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008.

The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru.

And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money.

Possible Models for us of the Levin

The Turbo 2NZ-FE making 150BHP; was rumored to be used in these as well....(Confirmed by another JDM land magazine)...

Edit for engines:
So we got 3 models..
The Base Levin: 1.5L
AE86 The Turbo 2NZ-FE
AE86 Trueno...Camry I4 (Sold in all the TC's /xB's and new XA the TA? )

And if Toyota decides to say we need a V6/I6...They'll source one from the IS250. or for V6 that 268 Hp Camry motor.

It's become public that Toyota and FHI are making adjustments to move in the direction of jointly developing a sports car. The sports car will be sold as a Toyota and the use of FHI's distinctive Boxer engine is under consideration. The details will be worked out by this fall. Meanwhile, the plan is for Toyota's subsidiary, Daihatsu, to supply FHI with subcompact cars. This will be the first domestic collaborative project between both companies since their capital tie-up in October 2005.

Toyota owns 8.7% of FHI shares. The jointly developed sports car that is under consideration will target younger customers, who have been losing interest in cars. The price will be kept below 2 million yen (US$17,000). The engine displacement will likely be 2.0 liters or less, and the expected release date is 2010. Toyota discontinued production of its 「MR-S」 sports car at the end of July, and thus there is no sports car under the Toyota brand.

The Boxer engine that is being considered has very little vibration and produces high horsepower. Porsche also uses this setup, as it allows for a low center of gravity. However, compared with other engines, it is fairly expensive so the task will be to see how low the price can be brought down.

On the other hand, from Toyota's side, Daihatsu's 「COO」 (Toyota 「bB」) will be supplied to FHI. FHI plans rebadge the vehicle and start selling it as early as next summer. They project sales of 6,000 units per year.

Every domestic car manufacturer has been putting efforts into marketing subcompact cars. But FHI does not have a subcompact model priced less than 2 million yen under its entry level 「Impreza」, making its product offering very limited. With an OEM supply deal, FHI will focus R&D expenses on its best selling model, 「Legacy」.

At its factory in the US, FHI has been manufacturing Toyota's medium-sized sedan 「Camry」 since April 2007. In Europe, FHI will sell rebadged Daihatsu's OEM car under the name 「Subaru Justy」. Both collaborative efforts were limited to overseas and nothing domestically until now.

For it to be successful, it has to stay RWD. If they made it FWD, it would basically be another Celica. They're not going to do that because then it would compete with the tC.

All through the 90's the sprinter trueno was front wheel drive. Car companies always rebadge their cars to mark up their price. What about the nissan 350z and the G35? They're not going to worry about competition between sister companies, because the money is all going to the same place. It's not really competition, it's branching out in the market.

you guys are talking like Toyota actually manufactured a car and called it the "AE86" or "hachi roku" and never made it again -- wrong... it's a Corolla. You should realize that this is just the next-gen version of the Corolla that may just happen to be RWD like the last version of the Corolla that was RWD: the hachi. Big deal if they're using a Levin in their marketing campaign.

Ummm...no, the AE86 was one of the greatest cars in its time and Toyota new it. If it wasn't for mainstream demands, budgets, and stiffs in suites, they would have kept the Corolla up like that. Props to Toyota if they release this car to going back to the good old days where the Hachi was the car to have.

And you don't think more aggressive body styling would do the same thing? I'm sure that if they did decide to rebadge a scion, it would also come with a nicer interior and sound system.

Yeah, but that would be as smart as me buying an Escalade over a Tahoe/Yukon, or a Navigator over an Expedition. Financially speaking that's just not smart. If the AE86 comes out as a FWD vehicle, it'll basically be a tC with an xA engine. No one's going to buy that.

I am willing to bet the whole rebadging frenzy of the big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) is what landed them in the 2, 3, and 4 spots and has put Toyota at #1.

The AE86 is a turd heap stock. They're making a RWD Corolla, so what? Suddenly Toyota can't make a RWD car without it being a AE86 or Supra? Fanboys be d@mned, it's still a Corolla just like the rusting drift box they've got on jackstands at home.

I hope they make both a new "AE86" and "240SX/Silvia" FWD just in spite.

Professor X

I think it's a great idea especially if the price is under $13,000. The sport compact cars are now all over $20,000. Name one sporty vehicle, not a sports car, but a sporty vehicle under $20,000. Even the ones that are under are barely under. This would be an affordable way for someone to get into the brand.

For those looking for it to be RWD, I wouldn't get my hopes up. I am a technician at Toyota and they don't have one (1) RWD car under the Toyota brand, only RWD trucks. Also, the engine code 2nz is from the same engine family as the 1nz which is found in the prius. It's not impossible to configure it to RWD since they did the same thing with the new IS/GS v6 which is also found in the Camry/Avalon. I don't believe it would be economical for them to make it RWD but we shall see.

People will buy anything if they have the money. When the scion xB came out I thought no one was going to buy those but fudge-packers, and people who are making an IED. Now unless there are really that many fags around, and people that drive car bombs to work for the adrenaline rush; I was sadly mistaken.

I am willing to bet the whole rebadging frenzy of the big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) is what landed them in the 2, 3, and 4 spots and has put Toyota at #1.
Toyota started its production in America with a joint venture with GM in 1984. I guess GM signed its own death warrant. I think the sheer effiecincy of toyota manufacturing plants and the quality of the cars is what put them in the #1 spot. After its one and only strike back in the 1950s toyota learned a lot about logistics and efficiency in the manufacturing department.

I think this car will be more of a competitor to the Solstice/Vibe than any of the TCs. The rave reviews that the Lotus Elise got in the US also probably helped to influence the fact that people will buy a lightweight no frills car as long as its fun to drive. Bring it on, I wont get one but it'll be a fun car to see.

Now why is Toyota building up their sporty car image but taking the edge out of all the new Subarus? 08 WRX is basically a Camry.
