View Full Version : MY VETTE = DEAD

So yesterday i was driving my car at about 50 mph and 2k rpms. then all of a sudden i started to noticed this noise coming from the engine bay, didnt sound like a knock or a ping. Started to get louder and louder (sounded like a peice of metal in the dryer) i pull over to the beefobradys parking lot off of old atlanta. The fucker pretty much died on me before i could make it all the way into a spot. So I'm thinking fuck, what did I (me personally do wrong). Called GM roadside assistance, they got it up on the tow truck with no problems and off. which i parked it on the street between gwinnett place honda and gwinnett place chevy. Couldn't sleep all fucking night last night, got up at 6:40 a.m. to ride over the dealerSHIT to tell them what happen and what went wrong. We told them the truth which i was driving and so they jumped to conclusion that I fucked it up being 18 years old. My dad had to sign a form saying that they could tear apart the block and if they found anything that had been tampered with it would cost him (meaning me) 1300 dollars. They found out that a peice of metal some how got into the first piston on the driver side, it scarred the piston wall, made the cylinder head look like a dog chewed it up like a peice of wood, and the top of the cylinder is fucked. Now we are in the process of getting a new motor. My dad's friend is head of N.A. operations for GM so he is going to try to get a new LS3 and if not they will ship out a new LS2 with some ambassidor (sp) plan that my dad's friend can use to get parts faster to him, friends and/or family. Later on in the day say 6:00 p.m. Chevrolet called us and told us that the catalytic converter had come apart and went back up into the exhaust valve and basically thats the noise i heard when it first started to fuck up and thats what screwed my up my motor

thanks for reading.

edit : btw they gave me a sweet red 2008 grand prix to drive :gay:

new LS3 is from what i've heard is different heads, and 440 hp or something like that
436 hp with the optional $1200 tuned exhaust. The mufflers are just like the Z06 with the doors on them. It opens around like 2800 rpm and gives it the rumble it's supposed to have, along with 6 additional more horses to play with.

Dude, that really sucks fat horse testicles, man. I know you can't wait until you get your car back.

Sux 'bout the motor.

Now I know I'm not real bright, but splain somthin' to me. How in the phuck does a piece of metal from a cat travel UP stream against the exhaust flow/turbulance, UP through the header/manifold .... make the turn UP hill into the UP stream side of the chamber and enter the cylinder at the exact nano second the valve was open..... ? :???:

Sounds like either God made that shit happen  or your dealer dude is trippin' hard

Tell him I'd like a bag of that shit :D

Never heard of anything like that before  Sounds more like a valve seat let go and bounced around inside the chamber. I have seen that happen....

Anyway.... good luck on the new motor-

Dude the EXACT same thing happened on my dad's 2000 impala... There was/is a recall out on the cat in that car (3.8 v6) because of some issue about the header to cat coupler is plastic, and it melts (durr), and causes some sort of reverse suction to occur, which will suck anything in the cat up the header... generally it incinerates in the high heat of the header before doing any damage, but on some of them, my dad's car included, a chunk of carbon and metal mesh made it all the way up and ate the shit out of the head. Luckily it was a warranty/recall issue, so it was fixed free... but that sucks that it happened to your vette!

its a 6.2l rated at 436, that would be awesome if they did that for you, probably be one of few 07's runing around with that, gives you a jump in base hp when it comes to adding mods, wonder if the ls2 bolt ons will match up to it, bc it would suck to have to wait around for new stuff to come out for it :(

I dont know where yall are getting your numbers from but everything I have read about the ls3 is that its 450hp. I may be wrong but thats what I have read about the camaro. I kind of doubt that GM would stop making the ls2 just yet. I am sure you can buy a crate motor all day long. I am sure you could go to the dealer and buy a ls1 or ls6 if you wanted, neither engine is any production Gm at this time.

Your source is innacurate. The new LS3 motor is 436max with an upgraded exhaust option for the '08 C6 coming out in November.

There have already been 506rwhp LS3 C6's coming out with a cam and bolt ons.

Nissan had a similar recall on V6 Frontier trucks for the same thing. The first release of the Nissan QR25DE had the same recall. Disintegrating pre-cat was getting sucked back into the engine and scoring cylinder walls.

well today i think i am going to go to chevrolet and post pics of the motor, just so yall can see the damage, my dad told me its the deepest scratch on a piston wall he has seen on a street car and back in his day (the 60s) he used to be big into dragging, so i guess that is pretty deep..

Damn that sucks dude, I didn't even think that could happen. A couple months ago the cat in my Fiero broke apart, and for about 3 weeks I could hear pieces of it moving around in my exhaust, especially when I was engine breaking. Then 1 day there was a loud BANG out of the exhaust and a cloud of smoke, but nothing wrong with the engine (still going strong 2 months later), just no more pieces of cat moving around in my exhaust.

I guess I was lucky that nothing got sucked back into the engine.

Lol, thats what I've been saying for the last 6-8 weeks. Motor should be here in another week, then it'll be running in 2 days. Motor gets delayed at customs, shipping company then loses motor, etc, etc, etc.

Good luck getting it back together, I feel your pain. How does a piece of cat get sucked back into the motor? Does the vacuum on a non-firing cylinder cause it to come back up when the exhaust valve opens?
