I haven't taken a ton of pictures, but I'll post what I have. I expect the glass to be fully installed on my car in approximately 2 more weeks, so check back for updates!

The last two pictures were taken yesterday. I would tackle the install on my car next weekend, but I'll be too busy. So just 2 more weeks!

so how does the glass roof work? it's just class right? not retractable like a sunroof...

and do you have anything to cover it up inside the car? I've rode in my dads Si witch the sunroof closed, but the sunroof cover shit on the inside was open and the sun was beating down on my head pretty badly, lol.

thinkskater
08-05-2007, 01:35 PM
there is a cover for it for what i have seen in the japanessse crx's. but this is a baller ass upgrade.

jfrolang
08-05-2007, 01:37 PM
Yeah it's just glass. And total class. :D

It doesn't open, it's permanently installed like a windshield. The advantage is that it can thus be much much larger than a sunroof. There is a JDM option shade (pic attached) but it's uber-rare and expensive. Honestly it's not necessary though. The glass is not clear, it's two-layer dark colored glass, about equivalent to 20% window tint. There's also a titanium film sandwiched between the 2 layers, that gives the glass a mirror look from the outside and blocks UV rays and heat. :goodjob:

jfrolang

Install price? DIY = Free. :D
There's a guy in North Carolina that basically pioneered the method, he does installs for $600.

The complete glass roof assemblies run $800 to $1200 on average.

LOL at the Marlboro stickers.
Yeah apparently American cigarettes are popular in Japan. I tried to remove the stickers as best I could but the chevrons on each side are practically permanent. I'll strip the panel and give it a coat of white before I put it in.

How much chassis rigidity is lost with that? It looks really slick but on an already old and ragged out chassis I'd stay away from cutting the roof off.

You'll see when I'm done, that it requires cutting no structural members. Those that have done this already say that the car's rigidity is notably improved, due to the additional material I'm adding and the metal bonding agent I'll be using is stronger than welding.

jfrolang
08-07-2007, 04:30 PM
I also want to add that the easy way to do this is to cut the pillars of my car and weld the whole assembly on. That method would probably compromise the car's integrity.

I'm doing it the right way, bonding down the glass roof support brace (between the B and C pillars at the rear of the roof) and then bonding down the glass roof skin on all 4 sides. Then I'll reinstall the glass with new sealant and it's golden.

JFRO - Looks great, man!

WTF! How come I never get invited to cool shit like this!!!!

Also, for anyone looking to remove decals and crap like that...there's a few methods.

1. Heat gun. Takes forever, and you gotta be careful not to burn the paint, the interior, or melt plastic...

2. Paint thinner - NEVER to be used on fresh paint...put if you put some on a rag (lol...on the rag...lol) and rub carefully, it'll come off.

3. Eraser wheel - It's just like it sounds...a big eraser wheel on the end of a drill or whatever.

Just food for thought...or, obviously, when you get it painted, they'll easily be able to help out.

We're hoping to see you up there at the shop before too long!

Repps will be given as soon as I hit "Post Quick Reply"
