Hey, i was reading on the xbox.com that starting August 1st, if you buy a 360 HD dvd player ($179 now), you supposedly get 5 free HD dvd's. Is this true everywhere? Anybody work at BestBuy and can confirm this?... because if so, i'll be putting that shit on my BB card. :D

In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba's highly successful "Perfect Offer" of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179, choose five HD DVD titles free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season.

No best buy, but still seems cool, depending on the 15 titles you can choose from.

I hear ya... what is your opinion on the HD DVD vs Blueray though? Thats why im not really sure what to do yet

BKgen®

personally, i think HD DVD will go further with the common people because they hear the words HD and "DVD" and realize that they can still play their old DVDs on a new player. That's just my opinion though... i just don't think BluRay will catch on as well.

as far as quality vs. quality goes though, i don't really care lol. hd is hd to me...

I believe that HD DVD is going to end up the victor. There are already plenty of HD DVD players on the market now, while Bluray only has Sony.

Fry's got a similar offer, but with the PS3, which is way better. ($499.99 + 5 free Blue-Ray or HD-DVD movies)

actually any blu-ray player you get will give u 5 free movies from sony via mail in rebate. if u buy the panasonic blu-ray player it already comes with 5 movies inside as well which include transporter 2, priates 1 and 2, crank and fantastic 4.

Also blu-ray will be winning this one. Server/media storage, IT companies picked it due to the higher capacity for backup. Also there are i believe last i checked 5 exlusive blu-ray release companies and only 2 for HD.

Also despite being a higher price point at last check about 3 months ago blu-ray players *exluding ps3* are outselling HD players 3 to 1 and blu-ray movies outselling HD movies 6 to 1.

For those who say that everything sony does fails.. well im sure sony became such a huge and powerful company by making nothing but failures..

as for memory stick being a failure, i was at a panasonic seminar today and they gave out information on market share for different kinds of memory media. SD wordwide holds 70% and memory stick holds 22% the rest of the 8 is comprised of mostly xd.. then the remaining compact flash..

so 22% for something sony ONLY worldlwide... is not considered a failure. Imagine the success if lets say GM sold 20% of the worlds cars.. etc etc..

And for the plays regular dvd's.. for anyone who asks the blu-ray players will play regular dvd's as well as upscale them to 1080p as well. also the ease of use with blu-ray companies supporting HDMI CEC would make it very convenient to make it an addition to a part of a home theater especially with most new blu-ray players having HDMI 1.3.

Also consider this.
Toshiba supports HD dvd. Their pretty big sure..
But panasonic is blu-ray only.. and their bigger.
samsung is blu-ray only and their bigger still..
sony of course is blu-ray only and their huge..

time warner was releasing a HD/BD player combo but they cancelled it based on market of HD stating the project was not going to be worth it.

LG currenty makes a combo player and so their not one way or the other. Sharp doesnt have a side.

anywho if u really want a deal call around some sams clubs. their stopping to sell the HD dvd drive and in some states people were picking them up for 62 bucks. I know one of the sam's somehwere off 85 near the perimiter had it for 121.

actually in correct.

porn industry chose HD true. but what is the percentage of porn now days on disc vs your comparison back in the day on tape?

its very minor. nothing especially compared to all the companies around the world who chose blu-ray as their data storage format.. which again wasn't part of the equation before.

ShooterMcGavin

VERY MINOR? wow do some research man, porn was a 57 BILLION dollar revenue taker in 2006, not 1986 or 1996.

and btw, it's official about the HD DVD price drop, and there is a new form out for 5 free dvds if you buy a 360 hd player

the porn industry is going to be a big deciding factor on movie sales... though the american porn industry is going HD; some japanese company is getting around the disney/sony deal w/ no porn  ... so the japanese porn going blu ray (not that it even compares to the american)...

either way it is way to early to tell; last sales results i heard HD sold less but they are making the same amount of money due to the fact it cost less so the % margins are the same. as far as production blu ray is just now selling disc in dual layer; all release dvd's even going into 2007 were on 25gb single layer while HD was on 30gb dual layer...

my conclusion: i own well over 1000+ dvd's and i wouldn't buy either you are crazy to go out and buy during the war over next gen disc; specially when there are companies already working on new laser technology which will surpass both HD/BR. the current technology has been around for sometime they are just now really trying to market it. my advice is to wait it out history shows what happens when you jump the gun on technology wars: vhs, laserdisc, apple/ibm, etc.

meant it as in the port industry that relies on dvd type sales now days is very small compared to what it used to be on vhs in the past. Also comparing that to how the industry for data backup has outgrown the Porn dvd side of things thus them choosing blu-ray vs porn chosing hd is a bigger deal.

agreed to the most point. But if there was a company that already had a new technology out then perhaps. But with them just working on it they may hold off marketing it for a while also just as they did with the 2 formats were discussing now. Dvd's were around for a few years before they brought them out because they waited for VHS to reach i believe it was a 92% saturation. And now dvd's had reached that lvl so they released the other formats.

If any company were to finish their new lasers and release a new product it would not be for a couple of years and by then, looking at current sales many people would already own one of the current formats and be unwilling to spend another 500+. Furthermore, until tv resolutions surpass 1080p or companies go beyond 24p processing or hdmi1.3 etc etc, there is no advantage atm to a new type laser as Blu-ray / hd already push the limits of tv technology. Heck most companies are just now starting to release 120hz tv's.

again just my thoughts tho

No no.. i get it..

but again did you read? how much of that is actually through DVD sales? or would be through HD dvd sales?

yeah.. very.. very.. very very very little of that.

Ok now consider the worlds IT, data storage etc. And how big of a industry that is of which 90% are moving towards blu-ray and which would be a bigger market??

so i never denied its a market. but i said the bigger market went blu-ray.
and again, toshiba hd player.. or 360 hd player.. vs sony, samsung, panasonic, time warner, pioneer, hitachi blu-ray players.. showing you which format the major electronic companies are mostly supporting.
