View Full Version : General Chat Sentra SE-R vs. Audi A4 vs. VW Golf GTI

So I'm looking for a new car and so far the ones I'm most interested in are a 2002 Sentra SE-R Spec V, a 1997 Audi A4 2.8, and a 2000 Golf GTI VR6. All are manual, and all are in the same nieghborhood HP wise. They're also all in the same nieghborhood price wise which is one of the main reasons for choosing them. The Audi is AWD which is a plus, but does anyone know what kind of real world mpg they get? Also maintenance; how expensive? The only Volkswagons I've ever worked on were '68 and '72 beetles, so I'm not sure how much work I could do on the car myself. What do ya'll think?

I would either go with the Vw or the Nissan...The A4 2.8 has very little in the way of aftermarket support......The Vw would probably be right on par with the Nissan but in the longrun, the Vw would be more on maintainance not to mention aftermarket parts are a little more costly......

Good luck with any one that you choose though...

My moms Audit A6 2.8 Quattro got about 20 mpg. But my suggestions stay away from early 2.8 A4's. My sister had one (which she just sold today) and repairs were expensive and frequent. I would go with a later A4 if anything.

If your going to get a GTI VR6 get an 02+. 24 valves>12 valves. As for maintenance I have had around 600 in maintenance in the 3 years I have owned my GTI.

Hope that helps.

The Golf is the best out of those less than desirable choices.

I would go with a4 but the 1.8t. Easy to work on and has the best potential. If you are stuck on those get the sentra. The 2.8's are shitty .

Don't go with the 02. They're the ones with the weakest trannys, go with an 03 or 04. Im sure the 05-06's are still hard to find cheap.

spec V all day! had a 03 loved it, they are "meant to be man handled" so if you want something silky and refined and something that is basically a silky road drive but doesn't come with a LSD then get a golf *hehe kyle* but i'd prefer a spec V, but thats me. 1.8t is a great engine though, no lsd, and expensive repairs

The 1.8t has a upside that the Sentra does not, a blind man could work on it. Sentra not so much.

Explain yourself.

Because the car is marketed as only "GTI" today has no relevance to the the GTI being a variant of the Golf model while GTI itself was a variant of the Rabbit (original) model.

Horrible comparison. Its still a base golf.

Please don't make yourself look (any more) like you have no idea about your own car.
I know plenty about my car, nothing I have done has suggested otherwise. Simply because I refuse to call my car a golf has absolutely no bearing on my knowledge of VW"s. It's a golf gti sure but why call it a golf. If you had an SRT4 would you say "I drive a neon" or "I drive an SRT4"? The list can go on.

No need. I am suprised I have to say. Either way saying the car in your signature is not a Golf is exactly like someone saying they drive an SE-R. Because the SE-R is just NOT an Altima LOLz.

I wouldn't really expect someone with an automatic Golt GTI 1.8T to understand nomenclature or model history so I would say that yes, I have wasted my time here.

Hahaha. Wow if all else fails find something new to attack. Your argument failed so all you have left is to attack my car. Your intelligence and maturity is certainly not your strong point is it?

I could easily rip on the "modded" volvo but I am above that.

Fr33way
07-25-2007, 12:15 AM
Who is ripping? I like VW/Audi and the chicks I know with automatics love them.

Say what you want about any of my cars past or present, why would you think that would matter at all? BTW why hasn't your slushbox sold?

K whatever.

BTW: It is being sold this week if everything checks out. Thanks for being concerned.

You= Failure. God you are like 0-10 today.

Edit: Again very mature. You lost an argument and instead of ever admitting it you just attack my shit. Grow up man.

Another Edit: I'm going to sleep.

07-25-2007, 12:25 AM
Wow. All this because you need to call your car a GTI instead of a Golf GTI? Attack? This is the INTERNET man, because I disagree with you I am attacking you?

How is anything I said an attack? Chicks don't drive 1.8Ts? most chicks don't drive automatics? Your car isn't automatic? I actually have been suprised that the car hadn't sold.

You had already stated that GTI is what YOU call it, which is irrelevant to what it is.

Fr33way, you're a dumb fuck. GTFO of my thread shit for brains. To everyone else, thanx for the input. I went and test drove an SE-R SpecV yesterday and it was ok. My Honda is actually a little faster and shifts better but I think the Sentra was a little stiffer in the corners. To Maniac, I want the N/A cause I already pay way too much for insurance and the turbo car will make it go higher. I do like the 1.8T more though.

LOL. Make sure you only call the Spec V just that, not a Sentra.

Try to see if the car has had the header/precat issue cleared up as well as the intake manifold bolts threaded with loctite if you do chose a Spec.

URGH!! so u guys can quit barking back and forth like 2 lil yorkies

GTI was two door only, with GLS or GLX trim, 1.8L or 2.8L engines, suspension, and seats.
Golf was two door GL or four door GLS, 2.0L, 1.9L, or 1.8L (GLS only) engines, sport suspension optional on GLS with 1.8L engine.

GTI is how the Golf coupe is marketed in North America. All the Golfs sold here have 4 doors, all the GTIs have 2. Currently, the stronger engines (VR6, 1.8t, r32) are only offered in the GTI and the economy engines (TDI, 2.slow) are all that are offered in the Golf.
Because of the stronger engines, the GTIs also gett brake and suspension upgrades.
Same chassis, most of the samebody parts (except the back doors).
The GTI is just a Golf that's badged different here in the US b/c they didn't think a Golf GTI would sell.

Goto the rest of the world and it's called a Golf GTI.

Fr33way
07-25-2007, 01:19 PM
Agreed. But the turbo engine is a 2.0L in this generation. You are totally correct in that they dropped the Golf name in the US market for marketing purposes.

1.8T's are quick with a few boltons but its hard to get good hp for the money on a 2.8.

If you're going for a Spec V, get an 03+ as the 02 models had a lot of engine problems.

I love Nissan but I wouldn't even let my worst enemy buy one. JUNK > QR25DEThe QR25DE suffers from small issues. The precat is an easy replace as everyone and their grandmother upgrades to an aftermarket header anyway. The gain/$$$ ratio is very good. The only other issue the engine had was the TB butterfly screws. A little locktite and problem solved. Also, when boosted, these cars can beat EVO's. People need to quit trying to compare the QR25DE to the SR20DE as they're two completely seperate powerplants.

EDIT: Post edited due to my lack of reading skills.
