I dont know alot about the breed and I know the media puts ALOT of doubts in peoples heads on them, I have a lady who I work with who has 4 pits and one was rescued from dig fighting, It was the bait dog that was used for bigger dogs to attack to get better at. And she says that dog is so sweet, BUT I hear of Pitts turning on thier owners awith no warning to, so I dont know what to think about the breed but I do know they dont deserve to be used for peoples amusement to kill eachother.

from what i understand inbreading is the cause of the dogs being uncontrollable, if you can get a pure bread then i dont think there would be a problem with the dog

I love pits. I think they're gorgeous dogs. The problem (as stated above) is negative public representation. I don't care what anyone says, ANY dog can just 'snap' and turn on it's owner. It's all about how you treat the dog, and how it was raised. They say the same about rotts and dobermans as well, but I've had the same rottweilier since I was 10, as well as a few others and they've never given us any trouble.

That's where most people go wrong. They think that just because you raise a dog as if it were in heaven, that the dog will never attack. Raising is a big part in a dog's temperament, but certainly not the deal. Later, QD.

^^.. and they go for the throat and have I think over 100 pounds per square inch of pressure in thier jaws, they are not a typical dog that can be pulled off thier prey (Human or not)

My cat bites the shit out of me. She is so bossy, I swear!

Anyways, I love Pits! I am trying to get Dan to buy me one as we speak (he says no but I keep trying anyways). I want a blue Pitt. They are so pretty! Lots of my friends have pits and that are very friendly and happy-go-lucky.

my healthy pit is only 50 pounds.... not all are huge and muscled up...

mine is very muscular.. but lean. and it knows damn well I CAN and WILL control it. i'll admit, they are stubborn... but just like any other stubborn male dog, you've got to show it who the "alpha dog" is. my pup knows when i give him a tug on the scruff of the neck, to follow me... or if i get in a certain tone, it had better listen.

anyways... Amanda was in the AJC in an article called "Pros and Cons of pitbulls" or something like that. Thats how i found this stuff. ya'll should look it up. it's a decent read. and kinda gives a bit of insight on the breed.

and i'm sure her site has much more!

A full blooded Pit Bull terrier should be between 35-50 pounds. These massive pitbulls you see are due to Backyard Breeders or other breeders who only care to breed for cosmetic reasons.

PITS are not bad dogs, i have had them all my life with no problems, some were full blooded and some were not some around thirtylbs most between 65-120lbs

they dont make bad dogs they just get unlucky and have bad owners and thats what causes the bad press and rep

Not true. Pit's have very muscular jaws, but they don't "lock" in any way.

THANK YOU. Everyone and their brother thinks that pits can lock their jaws.. they don't. But they can bite with a total of almost 1500 lbs of pressure... not an easy feat to open those back up.

Pits are great animals, just very unforgiving. If you hit a pit, they will not forget it. Not like they will sit and plot revenge or anything, but if you raise your hand to hit them and do, they will remember that you did that. Therefore, if you raise a hand to them again, whether it's to actually hit them or just messing around, they will remember that the last time you did that, you hit them. Most dogs cower and respond to something like that with fear... they will tuck tail and run. Pits are, in their essence, hunting and aggressive dogs. They have had hundreds of years of training, originally used as bullbaiters. No matter how well you raise the dog, their bred in instinct doesn't go away. So when they see you raise that hand, even if you're saying "hey buddy! Wanna go outside?", they perceive it as a threat and react. With pits, you just have to be very, VERY aware of your actions around and towards them, because they don't forgive and forget like most dogs do. They're great, great dogs, and I love 'em to death, but they are given a bad rep, and it's because people think they can treat them like any other dog, and don't bother to do any background research on the breed. Not just pits, either.. rottweilers, dobermans.. all of the "aggressive" dogs are the same way.

What it boils down to is that potential owners of pits, and any breed for that matter, need to research the breed before they get one. The internet's right there.. just do a google search for the behavior patterns of the dog you're interested in. If you want a pit, there's stuff you need to know. Hell if you want a jack russell, there's things you need to know. Silly people can't take 10 minutes to do a little research about a dog breed before they get one. *eye roll*

well, i don't know about all that... i have a pit.. and when i raise my voice, or my hand (not that i beat it to death or anything) it knows to back down. like i've said a hundred time... ALL DOGS have to know who's boss... look at a pack of wolves.. they have the alpha dog(who's the leader) and the omega dog (the dog that has to take all the crap from the alpha) My pit knows and respects that i'm the boss.. if i say no, he knows he needs to stop. if he does something wrong, he's gonna get punished....

the only time i "raise my fist" to my dog is when we're playing... he'll growl, bark, whimper, whine, wag his tail.. all of it all at once.. he knows the difference in play time, and "i better stop or i'm in trouble" time....

Nobody should ever hit a dog. It's very counter-productive when it comes to training.

just like no one should ever spank their child right

i'm sorry, but you can't put a dog in the corner. my dog is a yr old... still a pup. and for a pup he is very well behaved. i don't hurt him in anyway... (i don't even think i could hurt him. he's tough as nails) matter of fact he's never even yelped... and again, i don't beat him. a slap on the hind quarter is the extent of it.

Actually not at all like spanking children. I believe that is productive. Are you seriously comparing a puppy to a child?...LOL

If you knew anything about training dogs you would know that NO respectable trainers whether it's for agility, obedience, schutzund, or any other discipline use physical corrections to train a dog. ESPECIALLY BULLY BREEDS. Using physical corrections (like spanking) is considered an "outdated" and ineffective way of training. Maybe you should do your research before acting like you know what your talking about.

You said before that your dog doesn't stay with you, so what do you know about training him?

EDIT: You shouldn't have to hit a dog to show him who the "Alpha" is. There are plenty more effective ways, that will get you A LOT farther with your dog and they will actually respect you.

so hit your human child BUT DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH A DOG!!!! please man... it's the same concept. if done in the right manner and at the right time, it's just as productive... the difference is you can punish a child well after they have done wrong because they know they have done wrong... an animal/dog you need to scold as the incident happens so that it knows what it did wrong.

again, i'm not saying you should skull stomp the dog...

my dog lived with me, went to work with me, ate with me, went to bed when i did for 7months straight. i still see him every weekend...

whether you approve or not, my dog respects me.. i've never hurt him, and he absolutely loves me. so i'm not too worried what you think about my methods... outdated or not.. it's worked fine for me...

oh and i guess you want me to pin my dog to the floor and bite him to prove who the alpha dog is?? lol... and i've done research bud, i've spoken to enough trainers and vets to know what i should and or shouldn't do to my dog.
besides, i'd says he's got it a lot better than a lot of other pits out there...

When I had pitts I would pretty regularly stare them down... they never really did anything "bad" persay, like peeing on the floor or anything like that, so I honestly never really had to discipline them too much. But every once in a while, Max especially (the male), would lock eyes with me in a quasi-challenging nature, so I would lock right back and stare him down.. once I had to stand up before he backed off. That was always the most effective for me. Having a brother and sister, they would definitely try to "gang up" on me, but they were never aggressive to me, and the only time they showed aggression was when someone broke into my shed, they went through the sliding glass door and attacked him, but didn't really "attack" persay.. they had him on the ground and Max bit the living hell out of his thigh, but overall, a guy on the ground with two pissed of pit bulls, I think he came out pretty well.

I miss them.

LoL...It's your dog, you can do whatever you want to it.

I was just letting you know that you are misinformed, but I guess your too ignorant to realize. I'm sure you and your dog will have a great relationship and he'll probably be a good dog.

So did these trainers and vets tell you that hitting your dog was a good idea?

If you knew anything about training dogs (which you quite obviously don't) then you would know that the N.I.L.I.F. (Nothing In Life Is Free) philosophy is the best way to maintain the "Alpha" role.

You're dog has it better than most pits? So, just because it's not emaciated and covered with fleas and ticks than it's alright. You're dog is still young, you won't see his true tempermant until he is atleast two years old.

But who am I trying to convince...You've talked to vets and trainers so you know exactly what your talking about:goodjob:

Anyways I've had pits, canes and presas. Its the owner that makes a god nice or not. I've seen angry fighting wanna be sheep dogs. Also take ANY dog and make its life outside on a chain constatenly and a cocker spaniel will turn mean and aggressive not to mention very territory like

I never said you would have a bad dog if u hit it, and I never said you abused your dog either. I said that it's counter productive when TRAINING a dog. You don't even train your dog so I don't understand why you got ur pussy hurt in the first place.

Again, I was trying to give you advice when it comes to training dogs, do I care if you take it or not? Nope, I was simply telling you the "proper" way to train your dog. If you would rather remain ignorant like majority of Pit owners out there...than that's up to you.

Again, I was trying to give you advice when it comes to training dogs, do I care if you take it or not? Nope, I was simply telling you the "proper" way to train your dog. If you would rather remain ignorant like majority of Pit owners out there...than that's up to you.

i don't train my dog??? where the hell did you that??? lol.. ur the one getting pissy bub.. not me.. ur upset that i'm not training my dog the way you think it ought to be trained. but whatever... the point of this thread was not to get this kind of stuff started...

i just want people to see the site i posted and if they have interest in the breed or adoption to hit up the site owner.

You train your dog? what type of training? It must be difficult to keep up his training regiment when he's not with you through the week.

I highly doubt you train your dog. Just because you taught him to sit and what "no" means isn't even close to training. That's what my original statement was about. but you obviously felt like I was calling you out. Again...I COULDNT CARE LESS WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR DOG. I put that in this thread so other misinformed people who were actually interested in training there dog could see it.

Thanks for letting me know I'm pissy...because I had no idea...lol

It takes a lot more than an ignorant pit owner to get me upset...I see them all the time.
