like the title says....
I was 6/7 feet from the car in front of me... he slammed on his brakes and came to a complete stop... i laughed and ended up passing him. LMAO he stuck his finger out the window pretty much the whole time we were going down the rd after that.
I wasn't on his ass by any means but I guess he thought I was..

its al lrelative to the speed you're going. 6-7 feet at 5mph = nothing..... 6-7 feet at 55mph... tail gating.

Without knowing the specific finger, we can't really answer your question. If it was his thumb, he may have been saying "nice car" or with his index finger, he could have been pointing to an airplane for a child in the backseat to look at or he could have had his pinky out because his is rich(when in doubt, pinky out). Who knows. More details are necessary to positively form a deduction to your query. Later, QD.

LOL :lmfao:
Yeah like mike said, it depends on the speed. Sounds like this was just some regular road, so if it was a 45 mph, 6-7 feet was fairly reasonable.

tailgating to me is when any idiot rides my bumper close or constantly when the other lane is open for them to take...or just any time they ride my bumper

i'd say 6-7 feet even at 45 it tail gating. At that point the driver probably cant even see the bottom of your bumper looking back at you.... that'd be tailgating.
Fuck brake checking people.... i'll just throw shit at you.

ne1 seen the episode of myth busters about saving gas and tailing 18 wheelers??
they said at 5-6ft from an 18 wheeler you are like 85% more fuel efficent. They tested at 2ft and it was 95%.... virtually no drag.

6 Feet is too close, and yes, you were tailgating.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tailgating
Tailgating is the practice of driving on a road too closely behind another vehicle, such as less than the travel distance in two seconds or equivalently, one vehicle-length for every 5 mph of the current speed. In most cases people do it because out of frustration toward, or in order to help get past a slow moving vehicle which is impeding their progress. Some slow vehicles will not speed up or pull over when the situation arises and this is seen as selfish behaviour and may also be illegal in some jurisdictions due to its increased potential for causing a car accident. Tailgating is also illegal in some jurisdictions due to increased risks of causing an accident.
But who seriously follow these rules...
1 car per 5mph is ridiculous.

I've never understood slamming on your brakes because someone is too close to your bumper. Isn't that a little counter-productive? What if the person tail gating is also not paying attention?

iirc, brake checking is against the law in GA.....i remember a while back a story of a person who was brake checked, scared the shit out of them apparently and they swerved, into a ditch, into a tree, and died, the other driver was charged with involuntary vehicular manslaughter or something to that effect

Well considering that another car could have been b/t us I dont think thats riding someones ass...6/7 feet was an estimate I was far enough away that when he slammed on his brakes I was far enough away that I had time to stop and I could still see his back tires (which was what i was taught in Drivers Ed)

I try to do 1 car per 10mph. It's not like being 7 feet from someone bumper is going to help me get somewhere faster. Plus I'd rather have more time to react if they slam on their brakes.

6-7 and a car could fit in? A Smart car maybe, Yugo could probably fit too. Or you're a poor judge of distance. Another reason not to tail gate.

It annoys me when people get closer than 15ft to the back of my car on regular streets (45mph). I'm never in the left lane, so if they want to pass they should feel free to. Instead they just have to keep on my ass. I can and will brake check people... it is considered their fault if they run into the back of my car. They should know their car and know how well it will stop.

At 6-7 feet.... you would barely be able to see the back tires... thats about 1/2 car length. I bet you were more like 15ft or so away. 5-7feet in front of you.... you'd barely be able to see the road that close to you.

Also need to take into consideration the seating position and height of the driver along with the length of the hood hight and height of the car to determin a good estimate of how far you really are compaired to how much you see. In Shawna's case if she sould see 6-7 feet she was probley 50ft behind the guy given she is eye level with her dash :D
P.S. Shawna please dont kill me.

Do what the DMV tells you, you want to be 2 seconds behind the car, if a car passes a sign on the road, there should be at least a 2 second gap before you pass that same sign.

BTW, tail gating to me is when i can't see their bumper on a regular car, tires on a truck/suv, hood on a dropped car, i almost always back off the gas and switch to a lower gear, to not let them pass if they try, do it once then move over and let them pass, anticipating getting cut the fuck off and aimed with high beams
I remember once I was tailgating a girl leaving school in her nice new caddy. It was 40mph traffic, I was just showing off for friends. She slammed on the brakes and I cut into a nhood turn lane and almost cut off the school resource officer as he turned out off the nhood. that was bad lol. Worst thing I've done to a tail gater is come to an absolute stop on sever road, sideways, flicked them off, continued on my way, not letting them pass. turned onto tab roberts started driving 50mph, they stayed on my ass so i kept a 50mph through the road and then at the sharpest turn i did hard braking right as they were in the apex, OMFG did they wipe out. i think they hit the curb but i didn't give a fuck.

I consider tailgating is when you're riding behind someone too closely. For an extended period of time. Say 55mph less than 10ft for 5+ minutes, that gets on peoples nerves.
I was actually brake checked by a lady in her newer '05 mustang. I was traveling at 45 down on I-285 with some traffic. It was in one of the slower lanes, and I was trying to get around someone driving kind of awkwardly in an Altima. (not staying within lane) That's when I learned not to tailgate. You never know what's going to happen and every 'ft counts in order to avoid a collision.
I don't try to tailgate unless someone is going 55 in the fast line in a 65...then I'm kind of on them for a minute and if they don't move over then I get over and go around them. Usually people will move if they see a car in the fast lane traveling at a higher speed than them, so that's why I wait a minute before going around.
But I'm not the type to get in front of you and go slow...like some.
Today as a matter of fact. I actually got mad, because someone on 85N got off from an exit and just decided to overtake every lane until they got into the one I was traveling at 65-70mph while they were just going ever so slowly going the 55! I'm almost always in the left most lane. I nearly hit whoever it was!!!
Left lane is for going fast. All slow people need not apply.
