I'm thinking maybe straight-cut gears :???:

Doesn't sound right for a super charger...

LOL, Its def a straight cut “dog box” gearbox spinning. There is also some noise from the differential that is mounted without rubbers/solid mounts. The motor is a 2.0. the car is a 320i E36 Saloon. its fully built By BMW Motorsports making 280bhp N/A! Also the Driver, Rolf Van Os is also a famed Euro GT series Driver for BMW Motorsports in the E46 M3...so he is no normal slouch at the wheel either

what good would that do? lighter?

a lot of that whining has to do with the fact that there is no sound deadning materials or carpet in the car its a race car gutted.

even if you took a stock bmw e36 and removed the compelte interior you would still receive a very annoying whine coming fro the diff and tranny.

less unwanted oscillation through important drivetrain components (i.e transmission), Better Response, faster transitions, less wheel hop, and in some cases made from lighter components (therefore lighter in weight)...not something you want on a daily driver though lol

It would not even be close to that loud though...those Cog gears, also known a "dog, crash or straight cut gears" have no brass synchonizers like most helical style gears we see in most all road cars today, rather are made completely of forged steel. The gearbox along with solid mounts uses the car body as a sounding board, thus creating that very loud Whine and clashing of gears. Take for instance the Muncie M22. it uses unsynchonized/straight cut gears and is known for its constant high pitched whine as well as incredibly loud crashing sound upon shifting gears, which gave it the name "Rock Crusher"....these came in STOCK production based cars

yes im well aware of those fact, im simply trying to say that even in street car with no sound deadining and carpet you will have a noticable whine which can be quite annoying
