View Full Version : Rebuilt D16Y8 problem, confuesed

I recently purchased a 2000 rebuilt D16Y8 motor from an individual, to put into my 1996 honda civic EX. Swap went good, everything connected how it was supposed to untill it came time to crank it.

Problem is this, motor turns over but does not crank.

Here is what I know is NOT wrong.

I know there is spark.
I know there is fuel
I know that the firing order is right.
I know it is timed up right.

So whats left?
Compression??

First time I checked compresion I got a solid reading af 130psi on the first cylinder, it was late so I did that check and went to sleep.

the very next day I proceeded to check the compresion of the rest of the cylinders and I got a weak 60psi maximum across the board. INCLUDING the #1 cylinder which checked out fine the day before!

WTF?!?

I spent 450 bucks on this motor thinking I got a nice rebuilt block.

I checked to see what was up so I poured some oil in the cylinders did a compression check, and it went up. What does this mean? That there is a problem with the piston rings, my guess is that who ever rebuilt this block did not bore out the cylinder to compensate for the new rings.

Well that still leaves me broke and with no car.

My question to yall, is wtf do I do now???
Is there anyway I can get this thing started?
Is there anyway I can correct this problem with out buying another motor?
Please any help would be apreciated, any advice would mean alot to me.
Thanks for reading my post.

if the person did any head work, replaced cam, valvesprings, etc it would need a valve adjustment.

what did the compression go up to when you poured the oil in the cylinders? i'm assuming it still wouldn't start when you went to crank it then.

Yeah for a second there when I first poured the oil it sounded like it wanted to, but after that it started spining freely like it did more before. It doesnt even sound like it wants to start, it just spins.

Yeah it does look like the person did do head work to it, there is "shop" lube all around the cam, and valves, i mean I am very sure that the motor was never started after the rebuild.

Did you check the distributer?

Yes nothing wrong with the distributor, there is spark, good spark, all in proper order.

I am no mechanic, not even close, but i did my reading and it said word to word.

That if you have low compression, and it goes up considerably when you add oil to the cylinder, then you have either worn or poorly seated piston rings.

what scotty said about the valves, but are you sure the timing is like 180 degrees out or something, can you hand crank the motor to tdc and check the dist to make sure its pointing at the #1 wire?

Do a valve adjustment.

If the compression was fine one day, and now is down, it can be from the following:

1) Too much fuel washed the cylinders out
2) Timing is so far off, that you bent valves cranking the motor over

WHat you need to do is this:

1) CHECK THE TIMING BELT, TIMING ALIGNMENT. HAVE the people on here that build motors or assemble motors NEVER Put the timing belt on right. if its off 1-2 teeth the car wont run.

2) CHECK THE FIRING ORDER. You would be surprised how many people fall victim to this. If you think you got it right, check an try again. triple check.

3) put NEW SPARK PLUGS IN THE MOTOR.

if you have spark, fuel then it HAS TO BE A TIMING ISSUE. THat means your firing order is off, or the timing belt is off. Even a motor with 60psi will run.

I think I figured out the problem.

Keep these things in mind.

I am trying to use a 2000 D16Y8 with a 1996 ECU, Wiring harness, and Distributor.
I think thats where my problem is.

What can I do to get around that?

the only thing that matters is the HARNESS THAT YOU USED ON THE MOTOR.

if its a 96 HARNESS , an you have a 96 ECU, thats all that matters

hey man, can I call you to talk about it?

I would really apreciate it.
