Hey thats some artistic shit. is that all just with a pencil? how much would you sell them for? and what about color? +1 for some cool stuff

fleishelja
06-30-2007, 02:52 PM
I honestly dont know how much. I guess what would it be worth to you? everyone has a different budget so Im sure we could work something out. I did both of those with pencil, Im working on the color part of it but its very difficult, and with no formal training whatsoever, I'm just going to have to keep on trying.

Heres another example... more concept art then portrait though... maybe I could do some bodykit design??

kool pics! i used to do that in ART a few years ago. I love drawin with pencil. Let's you get creative with shading!

fleishelja
06-30-2007, 04:03 PM
ya thats my favorite part, is that theres so much detail you can put in a drawing done in pencil. other stuff, not so much

06-30-2007, 05:34 PM
thats awsome man...

i love to draw...but the part that i cant do is shading...i always seem to mess up the drawing when i start shading...lol

any tips? =)

fleishelja
06-30-2007, 05:57 PM
shading is more of a tedious process... its hard to keep good contrast too so dont get too detailed with it. just draw what you see and when in doubt, just smear the lead around on the paper!

fleishelja
06-30-2007, 06:05 PM
and I think Im going to go euro on this celica... updates later.. im going out to paaaaaartaaaaaay!!!!

I promise I'm not trying to be a dick... but you have a lot of improving to do. You're off to a really good start, don't get me wrong, but you have a lot of work to do before you're at a level to be professionally selling your work. To draw cars really well, you have to be an extremely technical artist... you can't just "look and draw" like you can with landscapes and portraits. You need to have knowledge of layout grids, multiple perspective points, root squares of design, light sources, all of that. That's what makes the difference between ok/mediocre drawings, which is the level that yours are at currently, and the really, really good auto drawings. You also need to know how to mix media to get a successful effect. Auto drawings should start with VERY light pencil work, outlining your basic construction lines and maybe some rough contour lines. Then you should decide what media you want a majority of your drawing in. Guache is amazing, but it's really expensive and really hard to work with. Graphic markers work really nicely, but it can be hard to get color uniformity using them. Personally, I like using pastels/chalk to lay down color. If you're using graphite, you need powdered graphite in a couple of different values, and some extremely fine point erasers to cut in your highlights. Start with your base values/colors, and add and add and add... the more colors you use as you build, the deeper and more realistic your values and shading will be. Use your erasers to cut in highlights, and if you're doing a grayscale, I would recommend picking up some white charcoal pencils. That way you can draw highlights on over darker values, and you can be sure to get pure, bright white highlights. If you're using markers, start light. Remember, you can't erase markers. Start light and add in your darker values. Then use some guache or possibly white acrylic paint to bring your bright whites back out. There's a lot of books out on the subject, I suggest picking up a few of them and getting some pointers.

Like I said, not a bad start, but a far cry from being sellable. Keep up the work, though.. the only way to get better is to practice.

you should do them in airbrush or screen prints, then they would more likely sell

If I had the money for all that stuff, Id probably go for it. I'm not saying im a pro by any means and thank you for your advice. so far I havent charged anyone anything. its more purely for the practice of it. Also I would think a professional would charge alot more then 100 dollars for a picture. but im going to get there one way or another. right now im still working on the dimensions and proportions. I still cant quite get it right.

hit me up on AOL if you want some pointers.. I go to Savannah College of Art and Design, studying industrial and auto design... I can help you out a bit. Most of the supplies I mentioned (except for the guache) can be had pretty cheap if you know where to look... my AOL is Makostar02

holy shit... your going to my dream college man. I wanted to go so bad but I just could afford to go. I ended up going to an automotive tech school instead.. but heres the progress on another car.. I really tried to focus on the correct proportions this time. it would help to have a scanner or something to scan it in but my camera works for now I guess.

Theres still alot to fill in, like the detail on the tire tread and pavement. and importantly the entire background. but I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far.

you say you dont have the money, are you dropping money down on your car to fix it up?? if so, which is more important to you?? car or making money off your art?

fleishelja
07-01-2007, 11:55 PM
only reason im fixing it at the moment is because im trying to sell it. if I was keeping it, Id gladly ride through the summer with no A/C. I'm doing ok for the moment with my bic mechanical pencil and smudge stick :)

but then again...when i finger shade i cant seem get the small details...like my fingers shade too big an area...

(except for the guache) \

I think i have some windsor newton guache laying around....ill take a look later on...

I know you can get the primary color kit at dick blicks for like 30 bucks, but its not my favorite medium...I honestly dont like much other than like pencil, I like markers too, but I'm not terribly good at them (not lots of practice, if any with them).

^^ The problem with guache is that you get what you pay for. The more expensive it is, the more refined it is, and the truer the pigments are.

And people.. STOP FINGER SMUDGING! Sheezus... gonna kill me with all the finger smudging talk... Fingers have oils in them that you do NOT want on your art! If you MUST use your finger, cover it with some paper... invest in the blending stumps.. your work will improve by leaps and bounds.

I'm working on a doodle right now so I can show y'all my handiwork... :D

man, if i had an evo i would buy that pic you drew, i think it looked more dynamic by itself w/ no background. i used to draw and instead of finger smudging if your lazy and dont feel like going anywhere, get some paper and twist it into a fine point then bend a peice of the end to then use it to manipulate the shading. if you want to do one of my accord with an added lip id buy it if you are like 30 mins away or less. props to you tho cars are one of the hardest things to draw +1

thanks everyone, and trd, sorry man, I had started drawing your car and got a mental block or something... I'm going to try again in a couple days. And JDM-95-Hatch, PM me some pics and I'll see what I can do. I have to work the rest of the week so my progress will be slowed down a bit :( I did finish a kick ass NSX drawing though :)

I'm back with more.. Im working on the first of many paid drawings right now. I figured Id post up the progress shots. just to see if any of you were interested in seeing how it all comes together. the guy who im doing this for wanted a split page with the front of the car up top and a back view on bottom. anyway, heres what I got. constructive criticism welcome

I charge 100 bucks. the price will go up with demand of course but seeing the demand is low, well I'm keeping it cheap. as for how long... id say two weeks safely. I have the current one I'm working on and two others. in addition to a full time job as a tech (freaking exhausting).
