XBox 360 vs. PS3

Help me. Alright so I debating which system to purchase, a 360 or a PS3. I have ALWAYS been a Playstation fan, yet have never played the PS3. My initial instinct is to buy the PS3 no questions asked. I would even feel comfortable buying one without having played one. However recently people have been steering my toward the 360, which I have played and enjoyed. I know very little, technically, about either. One thing I know and like is that the PS3 has built in Wi-Fi which is a huge plus to me...does the 360 have this as well? If you care to enlighten me on the positives, negatives, attributes of each and your own personal suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Also which has better games, etc? If there is even a difference. Any info you can offer is welcomed.

360 elite ftw....not only did microsoft extend their warranty on ALL 360s to a yr (it's retroactive as well, so good on any 360 purchased within the last yr), but it also has way more games right now, and the wireless adapter isn't $99, cuz there are many substitutes available (mine cost $30 and works perfectly).

The PS3 is a Blu Ray player (the future in hd movies)and has bulit in Wi fi, memory card slots, 60 gig hard drive and free online. The 360 is cheaper and has more games and comes in 20 gig no hdmi or 120 gig with hdmi. I own both the ps3 and 360 and find myself playing the PS3 more.

I know but in order to try and make it seem a unbiased opinion i was using prices ive seen vs full retail.

Like a local sams has the hd player for 120..
and if u dont wanna buy the Microsoft wireless network adapter u can get one for around 30.. its still more expensive hehe so the ps3 is still better. and when some properly developed games coem out its gonna be alot better

Honestly I would get a wii and a 360. Most ps3 games are getting onto 360, resident evil 5 for example, plus 360's online play alone kills ps3. Most people have forgotten that you get video games to have fun playing them alone or with friends (the wii is crazy fun with 4 players, play mario party 8 and see for yourself). It's not about the "HD experience" and if thats what you base your game systems off of you are going to be frustrated. Graphics are overrated anyways, I say just get what system is more fun and has better games. If 360 gets most of the ps3 games its no question what to get. 600 or 400 dollars to play the same games...hmmm, and if you play RPG's most are going to be cross-platform so it doesn't really matter anyways. Just remember $600 for ps3 or $650 to have twice the fun with a 360 and a wii.

they are not given the official HD liscense so interactive menu's and special features will not be available onthem. pretty much you can only watch the HD movie on those. so their worthless. and at a price of 1200 for a multi format. better off buying a blu-ray and hd player seperately

as for rpgs sure alot are cross platform but final fantasy will not be. you claim halo we got FF you got gears of war etc we got mgs..

In the end the actual hardwere specs the ps3 is a far more powerful machine. as of now games are the same because they dont have the software dev kits out yet to fully utilize the ps3. but give it time. like end of this year the games will blow away the most advanced 360 games out.

and yes even tho a triple layer hd is 90gb blu rays are in the high 100's as stated above. When the formats were first competing there were i belive 4 exlusie HD movie companies. now theres only one and they are also in talks of going dual format. And there are a few that are exlusive blu-ray.

They're redesigning the 360 Q4, or so I'm told. New, cooler-running processor will be included. So if you can wait 4-6 months, you should be able to get a 360 that won't fail as often.

as always i would say ps3 unless u really really want halo 3.

within the next 6 months there are alot of big games coming out for the ps3 exclusive and alot others that are x-console.

With a failure rate of .2% vs 34% on the 360.. again ps3.
also if you do have a hd tv ur gonna hook this up to BD movies look amazing.

Also just announced is a add-on dual HDTV tuner for the ps3 that makes it a dvr if your into that thing

well admitingly atm the 360 does have over all more games. I cant say from a personal view point that those games it does have are any good tho. there are only a few i would be interested in. same on ps3 only a few i own personally. but coming out within the next 6 months I find more ps3 games i want and maybe one 360 game i would even consider.

In the long long run though ps3 is gonna be a overall better system. as developers learn to properly code in the cell processor the games even when x-platform are gonna look alot better and play better on the ps3.

Again best bet is perhaps looking at the future release games yourself if oyu know what u like

i dont think tis gonna take long for the ps3 to trump the xbox 360, i mean to me it already has.. when ps3 home comes out in oct it will be over for xbox 360.. also when 08 hits and all the games come out 360 still cant hang. you will spend just as much trying to get hd dvd player for the 360 and all the acessories.. and with price cuts on the ps3 you cant beat it.. especially if you upgrade the harddrive on the ps3. overall i like the ps3 not just for games but for all the other stuff that it is offering. also blu ray is about to take over the market hd is gonna die out.

I own both the 60gb Ps3 and the XBOX 360 Elite, and I think both have their good points. The xbox has better online play, but the ps3 has way better graphics since it actually outputs in HD, where the XBOX just upscales to HD. The ps3 is a lot smoother and has never froze on me before, but the xbox will freeze from time to time. With the PS3 you can surf the net like a computer, I dont think you can do that with the xbox (or at least i dont know how). The PS3 has a blu-ray player, which outputs in true 1080P 1.3 HDMI. I own both the 60gb Ps3 and the XBOX 360 Elite, and I think both have their good points. The xbox has better online play, but the ps3 has way better graphics since it actually outputs in HD, where the XBOX just upscales to HD. The ps3 is a lot smoother and has never froze on me before, but the xbox will freeze from time to time. With the PS3 you can surf the net like a computer, I dont think you can do that with the xbox (or at least i dont know how). The PS3 has a blu-ray player, which outputs in true 1080P 1.3 HDMI. u should keep the ps3 and keep it at least for blu-ray movies. its well worth it. blu-ray movies are amazing i own quite a bunch.

For the forseeable future, there's no contest, strictly in terms of gaming.

PS3's architecture is inferior to the XBox 360's for gaming. The Cell encapsulation is inferior for running games. There is less system RAM and the GPU is inferior. Overall, this bottlenecks the performance and the Cell architecture makes creating quality AI programs difficult.

Also, there are no AAA game franchises on PS3 that are exclusives with the exception of MGS which isn't even out yet.

People can argue about RFOM all they want, but when it boils right down to it, its only an above average game and Gamerankings.com will agree with me here.

When you compare this to games current and future like Halo 3, BioShock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human etc etc it really doesn't come close.
There's a difference between good games like Warhawk and RFOM and AAA game titles. A year out nobody is talking about RFOM except when PS3 is brought up.

To summarize, Playstation's actual design is not conducive to actually running a video game and there are no AAA games out and the only one on the way is Metal Gear Solid.

Also, the Xbox's thermal issues have been fixed and system break down is no longer an issue on new consoles whether they be Core, Premium or Elite.

I'd like to see anyone refute this argument with actual facts.

The PS3 is a Blu Ray player (the future in hd movies)and has bulit in Wi fi, memory card slots, 60 gig hard drive and free online. The 360 is cheaper and has more games and comes in 20 gig no hdmi or 120 gig with hdmi. I own both the ps3 and 360 and find myself playing the PS3 more.

The PGR4 story was proved as erroneous.

They were trying to add too much superfluous crap and eventually it didn't fit anymore. Shocking.

It already takes a fairly long development cycle to make a DVD9's worth of compressed game data, how long do you think the development cycle would have to be to fill a whole Blu-ray disc with compressed data.

Even developers have complained about the Playstation's architecture. Basically, this is a lie.

And no matter who says what the 34% failure rate is a big deal. Dont even lie saying its not. Go buy a car that breaks down 34% of the time and of that 10% isnt covered under warranty by the manufacturer. thats right.. not everything is replaced by microsoft. Ive sold 3 360's to one lady.. why her husband is stupid enough to keep buying more because he doesnt wanna sell his 200$ library of 4 games..

For alot of people, not everyone so dont come back saying 'well i dont care about it so it isnt true" blu-ray movie capability built in is a nice and huge deal. If media wasn't a deal then the 360 wouldnt even offer a hd dvd add on.

3 year warranty. Its not a perfect solution and its still a pain in the ass, but its not a dealbreaker.

The thing is, that's an ADD ON, they made it optional because they knew it wasn't essential to playing games.

I was actually arguing that you would most likely never find yourself in a situation in which someone who has no interest in video gaming in general would be caught dead playing co-op all night with their girlfriend in attendance on a PS3 (I don't think Lair is quite that game really).

The only piece of Hardware that could be argued is better on a PS3 is the "CELL" processor, which most developers complain is notoriously difficult to program for and is why you see multi-platform games consistently release last on PS3.

Xbox 360 actually has more RAM and a superior GPU.

All the processes performed on a PS3 are bottlenecked at the RAM (it just doesn't have enough). Hence, in practice, no, the PS3 is not superior and you are foolish to think it is just because it came out a year later or boasts a larger price tag.

Rpg's dont do as well. strategy games dont also.

btw having more ram doesnt mean its better. the architecture on the ps3 and how it efficiently utilizes its resources makes it far superior. case and point look at the older p4's and the older amd's regarding their l1 and l2 caches. the amd's ran alot better due to how they set the architecture and the intel's worked but kinda sucked it up. nowdays intel's learned tho.

Actually, the problem was it was overheating.

The idea with the 65nm "Falcon" core is it generates less heat, they're taking more than one step to remedy the problem.

What does make fps's generally more popular is that anyone can play it and be somewhat decent. you dont have to be smart to play em and so realistically its a great genre for most people in the U.S. we want a mindless game. puzzle games dont do well like they do elsewhere. Rpg's dont do as well. strategy games dont also.

btw having more ram doesnt mean its better. the architecture on the ps3 and how it efficiently utilizes its resources makes it far superior. case and point look at the older p4's and the older amd's regarding their l1 and l2 caches. the amd's ran alot better due to how they set the architecture and the intel's worked but kinda sucked it up. nowdays intel's learned tho.

This clearly proves that the format is obsolete. Its a bummer, but its not a dealbreaker.

Because a system's RAM, GPU and inability to produce good AI clearly aren't issues, I will just crystalize the argument this way.

Not being a hardcore "gamer" and fairly easy to please, I actually like my PS3 over the 360. I got it mainly for the BluRay part of it. I didn't even know I could get online with the thing until I hooked it up and turned it on and it immediately found my wireless. I just play mainly sports games, but my wife is all into the "fantasy" genre games (Prince of Persia and such. The graphics are amazing on the HD side and the movies are as well. Never had my own 360, but played with others. No complaints on it, just don't see the need for two game systems. Buying just one system with dual tasks (games and Blu Ray) seemed to be the smarter choice for me. Later ,QD.

that's because it wasn't fighting the 360, but the HD-DVD market. So they invested all their marketing, resources and big $$$ into the blu-ray technology.

And the best thing, is... even though the war is won, they haven't stopped improving the machine. They put up two firmware updates already this year, to 'tweak and improve' the home theater experience for blu-ray fans. Basically Sony listens. We wanted profile 2.0 and we got it. We wanted DTS HD-MA and we got it. We wanted channel correction/mapping on 7.1 titles and we got it. As a blu ray player, it is now the most 'complete' system on the market.

So now that is done with, they are moving on to the gaming side. We have now in-game x bar, trophies, etc. They also launched their video rental and purchase service.... all to compete with.... the 360. Yes, they may have been a little behind in the gaming sector since they were focused heavily on blu ray and winning that war. But don't think they are sitting on the side and doing nothing about it..... ;)

just a quick note on the dumbass mentioning the 3.3 bill loss by sony.

thats how all consoles work. event he 360. MS and sony are losing money on both consoles and they ussually dont enter into profit until about 2-3 years in.

Except in this case while MS was already deep in the hole from its normal dev and production and loss per unit sold, they spend something like 1.8billion just to repair the broken units out there so add that. Plus MS is throwing cash around to try and win over developers. 75 million to square enix is the reported figure. 50 million for the GTA4 DLC. and they have not yet come close to making that money back.

on the other hand, Sony will start making a profit on the ps3 this year. not ont he hardware itself, but the accessory and software sales are picking up to the point where their about break even and more games/larger install base = more profit etc along with they've had alot of major production cost cuts. at release the ps3 was costing around 1k to produce and now its just under 400.

so yeah 3.3billion? not a huge deal at all to sony and their not even sweating it. they went through this with the ps1, ps2 and expect it for the ps3 as did MS for their systems.

halo 3 was the only xbox360 release.

the other 2 halos did indeed make money for microsoft during the original xbox lifespan, but, with the overall cost of initial release, production, research etc, microsoft ended up overall not making a profit on that console. They would have probably done this had they not cut producers from creating more xbox games in order to push people to buy the 360.

sony is still asking producers to create games for the ps2 to continue its sales and continues its profit making process. So yes the ps3 isnt yet profitable but the ps2 has been for about 6 years. MS like i said isnt yet making a profit of the 360 or just started to, last i checked was about 4 months ago. and they were for the original xbox, but they killed that system outright.

now MS did know this and plan this, in order to push the 360 to as many people as possible, but I dont believe they can continue this trend, they need this 360 to last as long as possible.

people keep saying that ms doesnt care if they lost money but thats stupid. all corporations do is care about money. Their long term strategy is put as many in as many houses, and once ur the known brand, work on a profit making strategy.

but as such, no game sold to date alone or series alone has created enough cash flow for the console makers to clear their debt.

For example, combine all final fantasy series games for the ps2 and even that world wide would not be enough to clear the ps2 debt. Not even the FF + gran turismo + GTA games for the ps2 would do that.

although there is a new factor out now, the DLC's. MS is making their money back extremely fast due to the DLC on xbox live, and while sony is lagging behind in that respect, their making their money back faster than before due to their blu-ray usage/royalties which they are tying into the ps3 division partially.

in all 360 has a better game selection at the moment mainly due to designers having to do the code in Bluray format takes alot longer but there is no upscaling having to be done like on computer games and on the 360. Plus I don't want to buy a system that will fry since I'm on my PS3 for at the least 6 hrs a day. I know the 360 will give me the triple rings o' death since I went through 4 original xbox's when I was doing Halo 2 and Forza online alot... And Yes I played BioShock on the 360 that's why I want it for my PS3. But they need to re-do Halo3 I still think 2 was better IMO other than I do like the Forge mode.

But really the debate on which is better is all up to personal opinion but due to track record of faulty systems I'd say 360 still loses.

Oh and the free servers on the PS3 don't suck at all great connection rate everytime I'm on, plus since I paid over $600 for my system and pay my monthly digital cable bill I don't want to pay for gaming online on a system I already spent an A$$load of money on

BluRay is a physical format, not a coding language. You're thinking of the difficulties related to coding for the CELL processor or whatever that troublesome thing is.

And really, the better game selection is a consequence of Microsoft working to get system exclusives in conjunction with more/better developers than Sony.

If Microsoft does get Blu-Ray then they are either going to lose people to Sony because they would rather just buy the different system and get a larger game selection then just the xbox catalog then have to be forced to buy a new system, horrible marketing strategy.

Doesn't really work that way. Although Sony does indeed receive royalties relating to BluRay production, Sony getting some pocket change from Microsoft isn't going to make their system better just because they're making more money. I'm not seeing the logic here.

For all you know, I own both or neither. My logic isn't being undermined by anything. Not only are games not going to become too large for DVD before the 360 successor is released, compression techniques are extremely sophisticated regardless.
