so after 5 months so far (motor being done 2 months ago) i can finally get everything put back together. 5 months seems to pass by fast its already June of 2007 hard to beleive.
after selling off the last kit i had to put together a new kit, ill never do this again in the spring/summer time worst time ever to put a motor/turbo build together (now i understand why people do this over the winter) i swear everything i wanted was either on back order or not in stock.
heres pix of the turbo parts i have been waiting for. so excited cant wait to get her back on the road.
heres a pic of the Manifold from Chris Man. it has a black coating on it. (i didnt want the coating more to that later)

after some paint stripper, pressure washer and a wire brush most of it came off, ill use a bead blaster to get teh rest of the coating off. i like the stainless look better plus its getting wrapped with thermotec graphite heat wrap

The manifold looks awesome and glad it's coming together.

am I missing something, or you had that engine working some time ago ... or it may have been somebody else with build up M3 engine (pistons only, stock rods) ?

well heres the thing. they would have been fine if the guy who assembled my motor at the time didnt leave a bent rod in the motor.
when the motor was torn down the first time we found 2 bent rods. he sourced 2 straight factory rods and assembed and gave me my old bent rods back in a box. i never looked at them. after the motor slung a rod i looked in the box and found 1 bent rod and one straight rod.
so there you have it.
sucks lol

That's a great looking car man. I think I saw it once at the Varsity a year or so ago. I have always loved that body style M3. Isn't 1995 OBD-1 also? How was the transformation from Honda to BMW? Are the parts that much more expensive? I would like to know your overall experience compaing this car to your last honda?
Thanks
BTW, I'm not a stalker, I just remember your old green civic from back in the day :-)

lol @ stalker. no problem man
yes the 95 was the only year the M3 was offered in OBDI
the transition was kind of difficult at first mainly because turbo charging a bmw has a few differences since there are not near as many tuning options or manufactures for bmw specific parts for turbo charging.
there are very few turbo manifolds and the ones that are available are expensive except for a local guy who has his own manifold whih is very nice for a cast log manifold which is what i used first. i got tired of bottom mount because space is veyr tight with the way these motors sit in the bat (30 degree tilt)
as for tuning, bmws utilize MAF sensors and not MAP pressure sensors so if you go with tuners that tune utilizing the stock DME aka the ecu you have to retain the MAF sensor and depending on the tuner you either have to recirculate the MAF or run the MAF in blow thru configuration.
stock DME tuners are quite expensive and if you ever want to make a change or retune can be a hassle.
i chose the standalone route. luckily for me a guy named Vic Sias out in california offers a true plug and play version of the Electromotive TEC III that is literally plug in and go so i went that route and now i can use a 3 bar map sensor.
internal parts are more expensive too because well theres 2 more pistons, rods, 24 valves, springs and retainers coupled with the fact that theres not as many people building BMW motors as there are honda motors so the price of FI parts is still not quite down with honda parts yet..
same goes for Headgaskets, ARP studs (Main, Head, and Rod)
Dealer specific parts arent that bad since the E36 is getting old now and there are a plentiful number of online dealer parts departments so that helps bring the price down of various gaskets and seals
as far as the motor goes well its a motor dissambly and re assembly is just like any other internal combustion motor nothing special or fancy
just have to have patience and a little more cash and its always good that i have friends that have BMW specific shops to help out a lot.
ummmmmm HOLY FUCK!!!!!! those are some gorgeous parts. uhh i would love to hear that thing start up
so would i :goodjob: but ill probably install the 3 inch exhaust before initial start up to save my ears and headaches (i think im getting old)
yeah at the track :goodjob:
i wouldnt have ti any other way, ill have to reinforce my rear subframe, diff mount as well as get a new DSS chromoly drive shaft (799.00) and upgraded Axles. (1299.00)
see what i mean about prices in regards to certain bmw specific parts. man thats going to kill me

^^take the time you did 4...divide it by 2. Add that to your 4...and you get a rough estimate.

pix of the manifold and AC bracket modified. im not losing AC in GA
well since i got my top mount it was clear that AC was not going to work. the WG placement was right where the ac compressor would sit and to top that off the ac compressor interfered with the runners of the manifold anyways so thats strike 2.
i called up techno550 (from bimmerforums) to work his magic and i suggested modifying the AC bracket to lower the compressor, i had no idea he would actually slice the bracket in half horizontally which turned out awesome.
basically mccoy and wayne the other fab guy at the shop where my car is put their heads together and decided that cutting the ac bracket in half horizontally would allow them to retain the stock mounting points on the block while still lowering the compressor almost 3 inches which thus allowed more than enough room for the compressor, lines and the new WG plumbing.
after they sliced the bracket they welded the bracket on the sides corners and the back and filled the back as well to add more strength (not like its going anywhere anyways lol)
the compressor mounted is not mine just a spare mock up one we grabbed from another motor.
in the end all i need is a slightly shorter 5 rib belt from Napa or autozone and everything will be fine. losing AC was not an option for me in atlanta plus its a street car.
sorry for the crappy pix i left my camera in a friends car
on to the pix.

one of the AC lines had to be modified.
we ended up using a piece of ac hard line from a E30 (the only thing from a e30 that will ever be on my car lol) to add length to the e36 line as well as cut and reweld the line at a different angle.
after a few welds and pressure testing with AC equipment we fond a leak and repaired the leak and another pressure test and vacuum test left over night showed the system holding 25 inches of mercury over night no problem.
i have some new pictures now.
motor is in. had more items that had to be modified :sigh
lower radiator hose didnt fit now so had to fab up a cutom hard pipe so thats done.
had to move the AC drier forward to free up the hole so we could fit the charge pipe off the compresor housing. in the pictures it looks close to the wheel but we have clocked the wheel and lowered the car all the way and it clears no rubbing. whew and it happens to go right to the hot side of the intercooler perfect.
had to redo the intercooler bracket to fit the new electric fan so now that fits.
down pipe and dump tube from WG routed back into down pipe at a slight angle done.
all thats pretty much left is to connect the down pipe to the rest of the exhaust and finish the cold side of the charge piping.
have to pump the 6 month old 93 octane gass out and put in fresh gas.
motor has already been primed along with oil feed line we have turned the motor over with the starter and it spun quite nicely with 7 quarts of 30 weight oil.
will change oil at 100 miles, 500 miles, 1000 miles and then 3000 miles put in my standard weight oil
Sunday is the day we should be finished! ill cross finger.
