I have a question about the commission scale there. Im looking into both places to do cell phone sales since i have cingular, sprint and nextel experience and just looking for a weekend job so im trying to gauge the comm structure before i call either back

No one goes to radioshack from what I have seen, so I dont think you would make many sales.

i work at radioshack, and we have a TON of people come in for phones... you dont make "commission", you make what we call Spiffs.. with a new customer, on a low plan, you make about 10-15 dollars per phone, and on a high plan 20-25.. so if you get a couple to get a family plan with a lot of min., you could make $50 in about 30 min. plus your hourly, which is usually 6.50 starting out.

upgrades are $8 per phone. and all you spiff goes straight to your check, it isnt a percent of the phones worth or anything. you also gain a few bucks if you add service plans and/or accessories.

you only make commission on parts, batteries, and accessories, and it's only 2.75%.. so hourly and phones are where the money is at.

hope that helped, pm me with any questions.

Best Buy has zero commission, but your job and hours are still dependent on the amount of stuff you sell. There is a lot of pressure in the retail business, so be prepared. I work for Staples right now selling business machines. The pay is not as good as Best Buy, but I have no trouble getting hours and scheduling vacation and off days. Foot traffic is steady, but not overwhelming at all.

No, but I was in the same boat you are. I asked around and researched from previous and current Best Buy employees, and they all basically said it's a high-pressure, short-term job. I was looking for an easygoing environment and alot of hours. That's why I'm still working at Staples lol.

Short-term for sure. I worked there before and hated every single minute of it. They're always pressuring you, like if you were some sort of salesman that was high up in a company, selling big shit :gay: Best Buy was the gayest job i've ever had. I hated that shit with a passion. Everyone that I know that has previously worked for Best Buy hated it too.

I worked at Radioshack too, what a joke :lmfao: That place sucked but it was a little bit more slack than Best Buy. Actually, a lot more slack. O and Best Buy, you won't just be selling phones, you'll be workin the whole department.

At Best Buy, you really don't do any kind of selling. People come into Best Buy already knowing what they want to buy and what they're looking for. It's not that hard to point someone in the correct direction. What they want you to do is try and get the customer to get accessories. Hey some customers don't have the money for the accessories, some people don't want the accessories, as they're giving it away as a gift.

I'm not trying to bash you here, but how could you work at Kroger for 6 years?!

kroger is the EASIEST job in the world. there is absolutely no pressure, that job is a joke. you can come in late, not show up, it just doesn't matter. There's no disciplinary action what so ever.... which is exactly why i want to quit. I want a more serious job where i can make more money.

But i'm still not understanding the whole pressure to sell thing (Best buy). How do they know if you're selling anything or not because it's not based on commission...People ask where this or that CD is and then you help them find it. The cashier doesn't know who helped them find the CD, so how do the managers know if you're ever "selling" anything or not?

Oh, and about the accessories, yea i can see that. They JACK up the price on accessories at Best Buy. My friend got me a $30 usb cable, and with his employee discount it came up to $1.25.... thats insane. Personally, i'd be buying accessories like crazy and just turn around and start selling them bitches, even though it's supposed to be for you or your wife...

;) Exactly...

Now the way they find out if your selling and stuff, is b/c the managers there are like hawks and will ALWAYS have an eye on you and the rest of the store. Those guys are no joke, they're EVERYWHERE! Always, you'll always see a manager. And then pretty much if your department isn't producing, the whole department gets it. So it isn't just like an individual punishment, most of the time, unless they see you always slacking. Better get ready to sell those PSP's!! Lol....the Performance Service Plans, they go crazy over those :lmfao:

Nope, i've seen them, but I haven't had any customer complains yet :lmfao:

Some authorized agents pay their employees VERY well. It's just hard to find those haha. Besides, with authorized agents, you do have the potential to make more money if you hustle. Such as buying back customers phones and getting a new case on them and then selling them back to those customers who want phones but no contract. I know you can do a lot more with the phones when your an authorized agent, than in the store

When I worked at Nextel corporate, we had this thing where we exchanged customers phones if they were insured, we would do it right there in the store. So most of the times customers would leave me their old phones, I'd swap them out with the new ones, and flip them right back :lmfao: I made a lot of money that way, then they took that away from us :( So I quit :D

Corporate Cingular takes FOREVER to reply man. Our commission scale isn't so good right now. But that's the company's way of kind of forcing some people to quit. They drop the commission scale, some people quit, they get new people, and then they raise it again. But as of right now, it is terrible :(

Hey Pm me your scale lol....i need to try to see what i can get out of this agent if i get lined up and go with them...If they give me my hourly now, ill be fairly happy if the comm. is better.... I got one of my old comm scales still in my email...

With the sales i did last month on my old scale i would have cleared 6k:D

Instead on my shitty scale, i got screwed almost $400 off my comm...

Well I work at a experiment store and they trained everybody for every dept. I wouldn't work for best buy unless I had another job (which I have), b/c the company changes store operation every 3 weeks it seems. For example, You could be working 48 hrs this week and the next you can be working 28 hrs. Also they may move you around the store at any time, b/c they restructure the damn place so often

the 6k on that commission was my old cingular agent...only problem with that was that we had shitty locations and i would only get like 10-15 sales a month...last month i did WAYYYY more (i did anywhere from 3-9 sales a day:eek: )

easy i got a job there when i was 14!!!! stayed through high school cause it was good pay while in high school....then i started college and while i was getting through core classes i didnt want to work alot because i wanted to keep my hope so they just let me work weekends and thats what i needed at the time. so thats how i could stay for six years.

EXACTLY what i'm goign to do. i've been working there since i was 16 and it's the easiest job to get days of and what not. Next year I plan on going to Gwinnett Tech and I still need a little bit of cash on the side for gas and stuff, so i'm probably going to stay with Kroger... but mainly i'm staying with them because i do not want to work Fri-Sun.... now if you can find me a job that pays more than kroger and doesn't make you work every weekend, then i'd be a happy kid :goodjob:. But through my experience, it's damn near impossible to fid a job like that thats not full time.

I will take that as an opinion. Because, following the part in bold, it seems like you want to be paid as much as you can for not doing any work. I'd be an ass to you, too.

i'll be at kroger a year in aug and im ready to go.

I'm sure you're not under contract so why not leave if it really sucks that bad for you?

now that im in school i need a job thats way less stressful

Damn, dude. You're 24 years old and think that Kroger(or any grocery store) is a stressful workplace? Wow. I'd love to see you in an actual work atmosphere.

honestly before you work at a grocery ask the young people working there what its like.

Or the older people. The people with actual work experience. They'll tell you that you will NOT get a job where you don't do anything.

every store is different

No it's not. Every store wants their employees to come in and do their job. Now here's what I suggest. If you want a job where you don't have to do shit, then you need to stand on a street corner and just hold your hands out. I would say to own your own business, but, seeing as how you are still working at Kroger at your age, you probably don't have that kind of money to do so.

A job is what you put into it. Especially remedial jobs like grocery stores. This isn't to knock employees of markets(I worked at Kroger, gladly for 3 years), but it's not rocket science to work at one. Later, QD.

im there for the tuition assistance. and the fact that i come in with experience so i get paid more off the bat.

when your doing something you dont like and have people on your ass its stressful. dealing with asshole customers or management sux and you know it

Or the older people. The people with actual work experience. They'll tell you that you will NOT get a job where you don't do anything.

the older people dont have to put up with the same shit as the younger ones. remeber the older ones have usually been there awhile. the kid are most times new and are the low man on the totum pole. why would you talk to the general about what its like being a private

yes it is ive worked at 4 different companies and every one is different. and im currently going to school for animation and graphic design. also i am working at starting my own business. judging by your little comment about my age i take it your younger then me. youll learn when your older getting what you want some times mean having to compermise, and taking shit jobs.

i work harder then every one in my department ive even been told im better than 99% of the other workers when they did my evaluation. ive been offered management positions (wich i had turn down because of time issuses due to school) im in on time every day and do what im told. ive never been fired or even writen up, belive me work ethic is not a problem. but even with all that i still have to take crap. maybe a job like kroger is fine for you (maybe u like being :idb: i dont know you so i cant speak on that) but as for me i have loftier goals in mind. being there is just a means to an end. just cause i have to be there dont mean i have to like it.

p.s. to the kid looking for a job if you wana work at a grocery store work at publix they pay alot more then kroger. but its your choice every thing ive said is my experience in the industry. ive been doin it off and on since i was 15.

i could write more but i have to go to work. another day in paradise:bannana:
