View Full Version : 97' GSR VTEC HEAD

Up for sale is my P72 head off of a 97 gsr with less than 85,000 miles on it.
I just picked it up from the machine shop where it was hot sinked and inspected for any flaws or warpage. I had the head shave 12 thousanths of and inch and cleaned up becasue one of the combustion chambers was knicked up from piston debris.

It has obd0 b16 cams, gsr valves with less that 10,000 miles on them, and a freshly painted vtec valve cover. COMES WITH EVERYTHING EXCEPT INTAKE MANI, DIZZY, AND THROTTLE BODY.

b16 head + how much $?
why would you rather have a b16 head rather than a gsr...?

man that one chamber is pretty fucked up.... I sold a GSR head last year for $500 that was in way better condition... You might want to start at $400 and go from there.

It depends what comes with the head... cams, intake manifold, dizzy....ect
I want a b16 to lower the compression on my build. Since the head is shaved thats going in the opposite direction of my goal because it would only make the ration even higher.

This head runs great, and the chamber is not as bad as it looks. I JUST got it from the machine shop and the guy said it was fine. He removed the valves, and springs and checked everything out. he told me that nothing would be affected.

So $500 for everything in the pics right? OK but you can keep the one in the middle.. I'll take the 2 on the edges and the head.. LMK Verrry Niiiice How Much?
how deep are those NICKS? compression might be a little lower

if lowering the compression is your goal, it would be a lot easier just to get some lower compression pistons. Swapping from a P72 head to a P30 head would not lower the compression that much. The P72 head has a 41.6cc combustion chamber, and the P30 head has 42.7cc combustion chamber. thats about a 2.5% difference. Now according to you, you shaved .012 off of the head. That means you lowered the piston to deck height from .030 to .018, which is pretty significant. According to my calculations, you removed another 1.709cc's from the combustion chamber when it was shaved. so now it is down to about 39.991 CC's, which is about 4% less CC's than stock, and about 6% less than a B16A2 (P30) head. All in all, you are still not going to get that much of a drop by switching to a P30 head.

When I say lower the compression, i'm speaking in specific terms. I want to run ctr pistons in a gsr block. That setup with a gsr head would put my compression ratio at about 12.5:1. Now, with the shaved head, just to be safe, ima say it'll be around 12.6:1.
After rigerous research, a gsr block, with a b16 and ctr pistons should yeaild around 12.2-12.3:1. Now, that may not seem like a big difference to the un-aided eye, but it is a big deal when dealing with detenation. At around 12.5:1 compression, 93 octane gas reached it's limits, and thats a battle ground I do not want to be on. So I figured 12.3 is much safer that 12.6. :D

then run a thicker head gasket. The B16A head does not flow as much as the P72 head. You will need to get it P&P to type R specs (p73) so it will flow enough for the 1.8L B18C1 block. The P30 B16A2 head is not designed to flow at those levels as efficiently as the P73 head (which is a 99% similar casting as the P30, but hand ported and polished).

I have never heard that b16 heads flow worse than gsr heads. Its always been the opposite... b16 heads flow better than gsr heads (stock vs. stock). Plus, if put itr cams in the b16, tuned with chrome, and possibly a port, i'll be WAY better off.
But... I am interested in this thicker head gasket method. Who makes it, and how much would it actually add to the combustion chamber cc??? While Im at it, I should be looking for the torque specs for a gsr and a b16a.

the p72 head (stock, with stock gsr cams) flows more at .500 lift than a p30 head (stock, with stock Si cams). The ports are slightly larger on the GSR head. Now when you port the P30 head to P73 specs, the flow increases dramitically. The B16A head has more flow at midrange, but at high RPM, the GSR outflows.

No problem man, but when you cay your looking for either a long or short block, that means you need a head and a bottom end. Correct me if im wrong, but the short block it the head, and the long block is the bottom end.;)
But good luck with you search.
I actually have a gsr block myself that I was going to sell, but I couldn't find a b20 fast enough, and I couldn't determine if a b20/vtec was safe enought for a daily driver so I just kept the gsr.

http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gifhttp://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gif I am selling a Gsr head from a 97' gsr with approx. 83,XXX miles. The head has Type R valve springs, and 4 of the valves only have about 8,000 miles on them due to the fact that they were replaced because the old ones were bent. The head is complete, and comes with a set of B16 cams, and vtec solenoid. I just had the head machined and milled down .012 because of a cracked piston. THE HEAD IS IN PERFECT RUNNING CONDITION. I am only selling it because I am going to run ctr pistons and the gsr head would yield too high of a compression ratio. With this head put on properly, you car should be able to rev to 9,000 rpms NO PROBLEM! Perfect for a ls/vtec or b20/vtec conversion. E-mail me if you have any questions.
