The story goes like this. I owned a 2006 mazda3 with the 2.3L . I put a fujita intake on it and managed to get caught up in an accident on the highway. So i bought the Speed3. Now given the car's "prowess" companies are putting a premium on the parts. Last I checked the Mazdaspeed inatke is ~$315 and the CP-E is ~$330. I dont feel like payin that. So i tried a MAFS housing and a cone filter. Pulled really hard in 1st and 2nd but hiccupped really bad in all the others. Mazda MAFS are really f'ing picky sooo......

There were no real fitment issues i just rapped one of the housing clamps because it rests close to the upper radiator hose. The butt dyno says 0 gain so far but the ecu needs to adjust, also there is a light stall in first. I checked the diameters of the MAFS housing and they are the same size. I get all the cool turbo noises now too lol. Only thing left is to get a K & N and allow the ecu some time to adjust! :tongue1:

Best part is I can return it to stock for warranty work in about 15 min.

Why not attatch the filter to the top and not cut anything?

Watch out for all of that hot air you will suck in.

If it is anything like my MS6 it is to hear the turbo spool up and the stock BOV. I would think the heat soak would be bad so I can't imagine much of a gain.

If its anything like Subaru, your IAT's will sky rocket at idle , in traffic, etc. And then the ECU will start to pull timing.

I don't know if you know this, but most mazdas hate heat. I know mine does. If you look at the average dyno on any of them, it shows. They kill the shit out of timing, which means bye bye power. And your filter is in a fairly bad spot, but I like your inovation. Since you're taking the cheap route by making your own, have you thought about doing the home depot intake mod? It's good for a few ponies and is plastic, so you won't heat soak.

Sol-Badguy

I figured all that would happen is a little sound.

He'll just soak up heat, and still using that paper filter?

It's now a hot air intake, why not just put a cone at the end of the MAFS?

OR cut out the very bottom of the box to insulate the air but still allow more flow...

I know!

I put a cone on the VAM on my SVO and it gained 9HP to the wheels.

However, take into consideration my SVO had a really resitrictive air box.

However, take into consideration my SVO had a really resitrictive air box.My Land Rover was the same way...had a small hole in the bottom like a birdhouse door. The funny part was the bottom of the airbox either slid off or came of with a couple screws opening it up from the little 2- 2 1/2" diameter hole to like a 6" x 6" square opening....about the same size as the opening behind the headlight where the air came in. Didn't make alot of sense to have that amount of air available being sucked into a small hole then into the big box with a big air filter

Note: I'd never have one of those style filters directly exposed to the elements, even if it is a K&N.

:goodjob: not bad, i thought you were just another whore... an intake won't do shit for a turbo car. unless its tuned.

fuck the noise and work on letting your car work over all better. Suspension/Power

fuck an intake, work on your exhaust and downpipe. but get an EM first.. all that shit for an intake, come on.

ur lucky mazda changed to the mafs, and got rid of the vaf's, those were a pain in the ass when routing turbo setups, and even NA intakes. ms3's arent slow cars, 14 secs. 1/4 stock is good especially with all the electronic restrictions on the car in 1st 2nd gear.

Nice, you finally got rid off that retardely restrictive air box. Nice mod.

05-28-2007, 07:34 PM
Lol look what i started, oops. Yes I know the mod was bad for heat but i was more testing another theory... turbulence. Heat aside, its really the turbulence thats the problem. Reasons that lead me to believe this: 1. No short intakes are available even w a heat shield. 2. The way the stock intake is designed; smooth tube trumpet and a rolled lip near the MAFS inlet.

And for those of you who said slap a cone on the end.... no shit! I would have done that if it were possible but the MAFS housing is made into the top of the filter box. And before you say get an after market housing for the MAFS that wont work either only ones out there that accept a mazda MAFS are 3" in diameter and that just wont work, too much volume.

Anyways im back to stock with a K & N.

what about a adapter for a mazda 6 v6 , they use the similar maf sensor housings, even the ford contours. check into it!!
