we used to have a similar spot in VA when i used to live there until some idiot doing a burnout lost it and ran over 4 kids killing them....

I wont lie, I've stood there for a burnout like once. That shit smelled like rice burning, and it was dumb as shit. No lie, I was hoping one of those dumb ass kids got ran over. Agreed. They needed to interview the responsible people that go to look at cars, congregate, and talk. As far as varsity meets being ruined? I think they just made things better by cracking down on idiotic behavior and maybe people will pay their $2.50 to park and not get hassled. I actually think though with the publicty they just gave the next meet will be larger not smaller as not everyone knows about IA. There's no way anyone would go to the Varsity next time, especially since they made a fool of the cops, remember when they showed the cop driving around and not doing anything? I'm pretty sure they're gonna block that whole thing off as soon as people start getting there....o well, hopefully it will stop that varsity meet and the dumbasses from burning out. Yes indeed it is but somehow I believe I missed the emergency crews and fast response teams along with guardrails and cars that had to go through tech inspection at the varsity. I dunno maybe I'm going blind. And as for going elsewhere I believe that most of the responsible and mature folks on this website met their first before it became a haven for dumbass's and idiocracy. I'm not to shure of all the history but it's far easier to weed out dumbass's then to get hundreds of people to agree and congregate at another location.

As for the next Varsity meet I'm more encouraged to go now as I want to see APD arrest the dumbass that trys to do one.

It's private property, other than trespassing or destruction of private property you can't be fined or cited. I dont know about lately becasue i havent been to any "V" meets since last year but I do remember some people coming out there with their kids. If I was out there with my daughter and some jackass started burning out near us I would most likely knock some of his teeth out without any hesitation..

Also the V is the only gathering in Atlanta that group of Whites, Blacks, Mexicans, Asian, and who and what ever else can meet with out having problems! It’s going to make history! Burnouts in a parking lot is illegal. Stated by the cop himself on tv. You think that after what you all said and what was on the news that they will be cool about burnouts now? NO! Burnouts do not make the V what it is. People gathering just to hang out makes it what it is. The burnouts just make the rest of us look bad, tonight for an example. I'm down for it! I do believe we need to get out side heard. They made us look so bad. Writing letters and making calls is probably the only we can get heard. Also I think you can contact like Fox 5 if you have a cingular cell phone or it may be channel 2. Not sure which one it is. Either way we can look it up and get heard

To me, it's pretty simple. The V never said they had a problem with the meets, I mean they've had them for longer than any of us can remember.... what they have a problem with is burnouts. If the burnouts stop, the meets are fine.


I think it needs to be pointed out to the media that quite a few of the people doing burnouts are not there for the reasons we are. They are in trucks, no one knows them... they aren't part of the meets, just there to act like idiots. Of course they will still try to make us all look like the Fast and Furious but it doesn't hurt to try.

:goodjob: I agree, the APD was made to look really bad on that report, especially when they showed the car driving around and not doing anything, and then asking the cop they interviewed if he would of given them a ticket. Of course the cops will crack down, especially since they interviewed those people and they were like "Oh my lawdy lawd!!".

If we want to continue going to V and not worrying about anything, I say EVERYONE who parks there has to go in and purchase something from the V, at least a drink or something. It's the least we can do for them, so that they don't complain and finally ban the meet. Then, you can also use that against someone who has a problem with you being there (i.e. parking enforcement or APD).

Maybe someone should volunteer to stand in front of a car while it's burning out and sue the person if they get hit, that'll stop the burning out :D :ninja:

I want you guys to check it out and see if I said something I shouldn't have, or didn't say something I should have. Also, If you were going to write them a letter, I would say to make the subject Re: The Varsity Story to show some kind of solidarity:


When I saw your story, the way you portrayed the people there made it look like either everyone was doing it or everyone was spectating, and that there were "lines around the block" to do this. The truth is that is not the case. The people you showed doing burnouts are a small minority of the people who gather at the Varsity every month to chat with people who they might not have a chance to talk to at any other time. And I know that the Varsity and the adjacent paid parking lot cannot complain about the extra revenue we bring them every month: If there are about 40 cars in the paid parking lot at $5 each, that's at least $200 a night, and with about 20 or so cars in the official Varsity parking lot, even if everyone only buys a hot dog for $1.35, that is still $27 extra revenue that they would not have because of us. And although it does not seem like much, you must realize that this has been going on for sometime since the late 1990s, with no major problems until about 2005 or so. And to the people living in Midtown who are concerned about safety, let me ask them this: would you rather have those people doing that in the same parking lot at the same time each month so you could avoid it, or would you rather have them doing it in the streets at any random time at any random place where you could be at a higher risk? And while yes, there is a risk of being hit and severely injured by people doing this, there is also a risk of being hit and severely injured while playing football, yet people will still accept that risk and play, which is what we do when we are around those people doing burnouts. Now this does not mean that I in any way condone the practices of those people doing burnouts-in fact, most of the time you will see someone encouraging someone to do that is in a mocking state-there is no other place close to Atlanta to do anything related to performance other than Atlanta Motor Speedway, and there the only real racing you can do is a 1/8 mile drag race with no timing, which is very unsuccessful due to the fact that there is no way to record your time and it is half the length of a normal dragstrip. In conclusion, instead of taking stealth videos and asking people about in a closed room, I invite you to come to the Varsity and make a followup story of talking to random, normal people and ask them what they think of the situation.

there is no other place close to Atlanta to do anything related to performance other than Atlanta Motor Speedway, and there the only real racing you can do is a 1/8 mile drag race with no timing, which is very unsuccessful due to the fact that there is no way to record your time and it is half the length of a normal dragstrip.

I am responding to the story i saw that aired last night (5/22) about the car meets at The Varsity.

First, i must say i am saddened that you, a community news team, would portray such a small section of what really happens at The Varsity. I have been attending these meets for many years. There was a time when the crowd was more 'civilized' and these parking lot burnouts were of no such thing. I can't tell you where or why it started happening. But i can tell you that out of the 4 or 5 hours that the 'meet' is going on, only a small number of people who actually participate in the nonsense. On top of that, the time that these people are doing burnouts is maybe 20-30 minutes of the whole night. The purpose of going there is NOT TO BURNOUT. It bothers me and a few hundred other people that you would portray US as going up there with the sole intent to burn off tires and be wreckless. The behavior is frowned upon by majority of the people there, but there is nothing we can do about it because we are not police officers. But in all honesty, showing those videos to Joe Schmoe on the street is going to look worse then it is. Here is a better way to ask people about it: Would you rather these kids be doing this in a private parking lot where the people there DO understand the risk involved or out on public streets being used by other motorists who are not expecting it? But that still does not make it right. On the 1st Thursday of every month, im sure The Varsity does see a substantial increase in sales as MANY of the people attending are also being customers. Also, there was a time when people were out enforcing everyone to pay for their parking space. I was more then happy to pay to park there and talk to my friends and show off my car. There are much better solutions rather then pointing a finger at a large group of people for the actions of very few.

i didn't feel like reading through all of these posts but i think the whole burn out thing is retarted. it really is ruining it for the rest of us that go there to meet up with friends. not sure if this was covered but i noticed that the second the tards started doing the burnouts the guy with the boots came around and started to boot people. but it wasn't until then that he did it. now with that being said and what 11alive said about the V's letter " that they have and will continue to address any inappropriate behavior" the way i see it is if the brunouts stop then we should be fine. so to those that don't want to go somewhere else (me being one of them) i suggest this.. that we should start enforcing the varstiy's rules meaning when you see a bunout starting up ask Nicely for them to stop. yelling at them will only make them rebell even more. if they continue to do it get the little security guy to boot their car. also don't stand around and watch them that just add fuel to the fire. im not meaning to sound like im on a high horse or something like that... just making suggestions so that we can keep this meet going with out getting into trouble.
