View Full Version : Getting A Title From GA

i might be trading my 81 corolla for a 1990 s13 with a sr20det but the only problem is that the car does not have a title and needs to be inspected by the state. the car needs some welding on the frame behind the front driver side wheel (its less then 6 inches long). I was told that it was an easy job and that after i did that id be able to get the title under my name.
Ive never had to deal with anything like this so i was wondering how that would work and where i would have to go and how long id have to wait to get the state to inspect my car and get the title. oh and im guessing itll be a REBUILT title!?!?! correct me if im wrong. but i have no idea what id have to do so help me out guys, any info you know is of great help! :goodjob:

yeah its going to be a rebuilt title, i dont know the process on doing it if it was originally in GA, bc i think you need a license to "rebuild" salvaged cars from here,
but i salvaged one with an out of state title, from ohio... you gotta go to the DMV headquarters (in atlanta i believe) and fill out some forms and pay $118 and they'll come to your house and inspect the car, and if it passes they'll send you the title in the mail in 2 weeks.... (the inspection itself literally only lasted me about 3 minutes tops) he just looked around the car... can't tell if this is the procedure or if this guy was just a lazy worker... but he just cranked the car turned the blinkers and shit and thats it.
but if the car had a GA title i think things can get more complicated.... (if i'm not mistaken, you need a rebuilders license to salvage the title)... someone correct me if i'm wrong....
but regardless 240 shells are a dime a dozen now... so just get a clean one, paint up the engine bay real nice while hte motors out, just pimp out the shell and then drop in everything worthwhile from the other car... then you have a parts car too :) so you have a good bit of extra shit in case of accident, or if something breaks

thanks man +1 for you! :goodjob:
but yeah i do know the 240 was from OHIO so im guessing im saved in that part. i really want to do the trade but im just not sure how long id have to wait before i can drive it and get tags for it and stuff cuz i dont want to get a car and then have to wait MONTHS just to be able to get a title and tags and all that bullshit.
oh by any chance does anyone have the number of that DMV place or the website i can visit to call and get more info?

I say you jump on it before the guy changes his mind or someone else cockblocks your trade.
imo thats a hell of a deal... even if the motor is blown
what kind of damage is there exactly on the 240
haha thats odd that your car is also from ohio, the car that i salvaged a CB7 accord coupe belonged to a friend I had in ohio.
so basically, get the car, get it in tip top shape... (not really just so it visibly looks decent, paint it, make sure it cranks and idles and make sure all of the lights work and the winshield wipers... basically the dude just checked shit like that and then left) pay 118$ bux and fill out the form at the DMV, it takes them like a month to come to your house(if i remember correctly), this was a good while ago. so you can schedule the inspection, and then start the work hahah just make sure you finish in time
but yeah regardless i say you jump on the deal, even if it involves taking the bus to school/work or whatever you got to do

ha nah man i have a daily driver already this would be my little weekend/project car i guess. the only thing that is wrong with the car is that the front bumper isnt painted, and passenger side frame, has a area which pulled back off the welds, its about 6 inches long. but yeah i just read what the old owner of the car said and he said that he went to get the car inspected for a out of state rebuilt title and did not pass. so i know for sure the car is from out of state.
so basically pay $118, wait a month, fix it up as much as possible, and then they come inspact it and after that id have to wait another 2 weeks...uhhh idk im tempted but i hate waiting lol.
i would get another shell and just swap shit over but i dont have the time, place to do this at, or expirience so id have to work with what i have.

Ok, here's the situation............
I bought a 78 Civic last year that was last titled in California. There was no record of it at all being registered in GA. There was no title period. Here's what happened
I called the city police department that I live in(non-emergency number). I had to wait around for an available officer. Luckily that took only about 20 minutes or so. He had the forms with him. (Keep in mind that I did not have to go anywhere or get any paper work or pay any money). He walked around the car and looked at it and did a VIN verification(called the VIN # in just to make sure it didn't come back hot). After a total of about 15 minutes, he signed the form and told me that everything was good to go and gave me the form. I simply took the form and my insurance card to the county tag office and paid about $60 for the new title and tag for the car. The title only costs $18. The tag and ad valorem ran about $40. Later, QD.

I second everything QD just said. The officier should have the paperwork with him, he does a very quick non thorough inspection. He checked my vin on my dash, I asked him if he was going to check the door vin or the body and he said he never knew they had one other than the dash.
Also, do not tell the DMV you bought a car without a title. Thats a 10,000 dollar fine. You "lost/couldnt find/havent accuired" it.

Hmmm. I'm glad you are with me on my post, but I can't agree with you on the second part of yours. I told them straight up that my car didn't have a title and they told me to follow the steps that I posted above. Later, QD.

i assume the 240sx was totalled (frame damage) and bought back as a parts car, w/ a salvageable title...
he goes to get the title salvaged to the inspection, they deem it to be street legal, he gets title 2 weeks later.

Seems like he doesnt have the title due to Insurance taking it away because it is now Salvage...run a carfax...
to pass inspection you need BEFORE and AFTER pictures...do not do any paint work just primer
All lights need to be perfect no cracked glass, no abs or srs lights

car has previous ohio rebuilt title, all it needed was a GA rebuilt title inspection
which means as long as you have valid insurance you cand drive up to the place, no pictures are needed only if it has a previous rebuilt title

That only works for 1985 and older cars IIRC.
With a 1990 model, he will need to title bond it. I have done it before on 3 occasions.

sooo is this an easy procedure or should i not even get involved with a titleless car?
so do yall recomend me just to call the cop get him to inspect the car and go up to the dmv or go straight to the dmv and pay the $118 and wait a month for them to come to my house?

if the 240 has prior salvage/total loss history it WILL have to be inspected by the state of ga and you cant do it, it has to be taken on a trailor up there by a licensed auto rebuilder. Bonded titles are for vehicles 1986+ that do not have a title due to fire, lost, stolen title etc....you CANNOT get a bonded title on anything prior to 1986 UNLESS it was in your name last when it was lost or whatever happened to it. 1985 below motor vehicles do not require a title in order to tag/insure them in ga, other states might be diffirent, I do not know. As far as quickdodge's civic goes, I dont know how he managed to get the title, because I've tried multiple times on a prior 86 model and they always said the same thing, prior 86 CANNOT get a title unless your the last recorded owner of the vehicle and then its not a bonded title, it would be a lost title. I guess QD got lucky. Also, you dont have to wait for anything if the title is NOT total/salvage, you can drive to hapeville with the title he gives you and get your title back 30 minutes later, or go to pull-a-part and buy a dash, throw that vin on your dashboard, or swap the dash, then get a bonded title on the "new" vin plate, highly illegal, but it's your call.
hapeville DMV is at:
1200 Tradesport Blvd
Hapeville, Ga

It is a 10,000 dollar fine in GA for not providing a Title to a buyer of an Automobile. My uncle is big into the car theft insurence something or other. When Sae from finishline couldnt come up with a title for a shell he promised me I found this little rule out.
