View Full Version : Cannonball "One Lap Of America 2007"

Alright everyone it is that time of year again. For those who don't know what One lap of America it is the modern day evolution of the Cannonball Run – yes that cannonball run. What started as a chance to prove that fast cars could go across the country quickly has turned into a more politically correct event where transits are done with some moderation and time trials at racetracks each day give competitors a chance to stretch their legs (literally) and their cars rpm limits. The event starts and finishes in South Bend, Indiana with skid pad trials and in between visits tracks across the country with overnight drives between each. No section of American motorsports is left untouched with an oval and drag racing events thrown into the mix of road courses.

A few years ago running at the front of the pack in One Lap of America meant bringing as much horsepower as you could, including power that comes in big blue bottles common to the drag strip but taboo at road courses. Big corvettes and vipers gobbled up straights and hoped that they could get slowed down enough to take the corners.

Over the last few years things have begun to change. Nitrous bottles no longer appear in the front of the field. Tuning does. What kind of tuning? Engine of course; good old fashioned horsepower is still the way to get from point a to point b in a timely manor. What else though? Suspension. One Lap is primarily a road course event, and getting through the corners counts for a lot. With the onslaught of factory cars from Mitsubishi (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1248677#), Subaru and those Z06s with exotic-type lap times for an affordable price, the old “just throw horsepower at it” philosophy has been thrown out the window. You have to get up to speed, and then stay there through the corners if you want to run with the big (lap) dogs.

What other kinds of tuning? How about wind tunnel? Yep - for one event consisting of 4000 highway miles (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1248677#) and about 100 track miles, competitors are turning to the playground of pro-racing engineers; big fans in a tube finding out how to make cars slicker and produce as little lift and as much downforce as possible.

The real tale is in the times. In 2006 I drove a Mitsubishi Evolution to a 6:17 run at VIR for three laps and finished eighth. Had I run the same time the year before, it would have put me fourth. Not only is it getting harder and more sophisticated to run up front, but cars that might have been a shoe-in for a top five only a few years ago now have little hope of even seeing the top ten.

“You guys keep getting faster and faster,” Brock Sr. said after the Roebling Road Raceway time trial in 2006. That was just after Karl Troy had lapped the Savannah, GA track in the 1:16 range – a time usually reserved for racing cars with no fenders or at least slick tires. Troy had done it on true street tires with a sight-blurring front straight speed of 168mph.

There was some concern in Brock’s voice that day, and for good reason – it isn’t getting any less popular and popularity brings in better – and faster – cars. The internet age is sitting pretty, and teams now bring the action into the homes of enthusiasts through streaming video, blogs and message board posts. Thousands live the event online, cheering on their favorite cars and drivers. This year there are no fewer than five film crews, some of them with real-time video as the event goes on. Last year lake-effect-racing.com, a web-site that covered One Lap from the road with a crew of video editors, got 2.3 million hits in the first 15 days of May, and over 200,000 video downloads.

That attention lures professional shops. The old-guard “One Lappers” are being challenged by tuners with 500-600 horsepower entries from shops that do nothing but produce cars that go fast.

All of this isn’t saying it is impossible to have a private entry do well, it’s just getting harder. Rain can and will play havoc with the best and the faster the front guys have to push, the more chance of breaking something.

So what is in store for 2007? Lots. The usual suspects are back, faster and more reliable than before. Over 100 entries are ready to go, including pro shops and pro drivers. Import and domestic rockets will fill the front of the pack and don’t let class labels fool you; economy doesn’t mean what it used to. May 5-12 this year is going to see some fast cars, probably a couple of upsets, and lots of very self-confident and fast drivers focused on pushing personal and equipment’s limits each day.

Snagged from Nasioc.com

Cliff Notes:

- Its a week long race event where you must drive to track to track.
- No towing.
- You must drive there with the same set of tires from the start of the race to the end with a tire tread rating of 160 or higher.
- No test and tune at the tracks.
- 1-3 track sessions per event.
- Each track session is scored and whoever has the highest points win.
- Whoever places best per class overall wins the class.

We competed last year with a 2005 Subaru STi piloted by Luke Russell of Tampa Florida, and Doug Wilks of Alpharetta Ga. This year we are all out to win!

Just got the updates and TopSpeed is in 3rd overall/1st in class!! :taun:

Turns out that Luke was held up on the track by TWO cars that must have been on Touring Mode!! We'll see what happens when he gets a clear track to run on.

Thanks for the updates Tray! I just sent Doug & Luke the weather reports to Doug's cellphone. Looks like a HUGE weather system is swirling in the midwest. The rain is very high altitude which will certainly keep showers falling off & on for a few days.

Looks like good news for Us and bad news for The "Other" teams!!

Where is Matt Ball? I didn't see his stuff?

He is in 22nd place at the moment. Tomorrow is another day! This is a long race. Anything can happen thats for sure!

Last year we were in the top 10 for the first 3 days. And we went to No problem race way. And a damn tear in a inlet hose killed our boost and had to limp it the rest of the track session. We went from top 5th to 33nd. The rest of the days was just a rat race trying to the best possible and fought our way back to a 5th overall win.

Sure looks like its wet there... here are the weather radar maps as of this morning. Certainly AWD weather and should change the finishing positions quite a bit!

We were nominated to go first on a soggy wet track. it dried throughout the day. im surprised that we held on to 17th, I was expecting 50th. so we,ll take it. the viper is untouchable right now. I think we can get the porsche, but we still have 6 days to go, anything can happen.

Not only that... there was mud, grass and debris all over the track. Huge puddles of standing water, some more than six inches deep at the apex of the turns that Luke would have to either go through or around. The drama was huge with air raid sirens going off for the tornados spotted in the area. Note... our guys were within MILES of 19 people who were killed from a tornado that had come down just hours before!!

To make matters WORSE... Doug & Luke made it through the snow blasts that were blistering across I-80, just before the State Police Shut the interstate highway down for safety issues!!! So they made it in just enough time. Reports have it that SOME were not so lucky!!!

Here is the link for their weather...
http://www.weather.com/weather/map/84074?from=36hour_map

Looks like they will be able to take advantage of the high altitude and cold air. The normally aspirated cars will have a 13.8-14.7% power loss at the engine due to the weather and altitude. Yeah, my pilot experience pays off in power-to-altitude calculations!

We shall see... knowing Doug, he is still in shorts & sandals... HARDCORE Racing is what we should call these guys!

Not a good day for the TopSpeed crew... Like I said earlier. Anything can happen at these races. And I'm affraid we may have had an engine failure this morning. :(:(:(

Supposely a ground to an injector broke and took out an injector. Causing it to lean out and break something in the engine.

We are trying to get a shortblock and change it out asap and finish the race.

But we will see. Ohwell sucks what can you do.

I want everyone to know that while Doug has chosen to use the Cobb engine for obvious reasons, all it took was a quick phonecall to Miller Subaru to line up anything the guys needed. If Cobb had not been able to come thru, Miller Subaru was quick to supply anything needed to get the TopSpeed team back on the road.

It is moments like these when its wonderful to see a Dealership stepping up to help the "Little Guys" not factory backed, no huge budget and with a Hardcore Attitude!

Best of luck TopSpeed!

Update: TopSpeed car is alive and kicking. Its on the way to the race event now!!!

When the motor failed thankfully it was at the very end of the race track and coasted to a 17th finish. We missed the 2nd session and got a DNS which is 0 points. We still are holding on with a 13th overall score. Hopefully we can make this next session and be back in the top 10.

BTW. Thank you to the guys at Cobb Tuning for helping out with the block etc. And the garage at Millers.

There still is hope for our All Wheel Drive Friends... here is the current radar image of weather heading its way to Hallett!!

Just got the call from Doug... they are heading to South Bend and calling it a day. Doug is too much of a perfectionist to take an untested pckage and push the limits on a track. So, he and Luke are heading home and passing the torch to the other Subarus and Supra to bring home the Import Win!

This completely saddens me, but it is truly the hard decision of a Professional to make. Mad Respect little Bro!

The brighton is done. I can't describe the disapointment. It boils down to goofy electrical issues we can't nail down. Likely caused the first problem, and after trying to road tune the second time, we were having the same issues and didn't want to destroy a second engine.

From an outsider standpoint, it would seem we were pusing the limits of the engine. But Doug was actually conservative w/ the tune, and it's the same setup we had last year - and that car is still running awesome.

A huge thanks to COBB.

Christian worked with us the entire time to swap the short block. I took a nap to prepare for the 9 hour drive ahead of us. When I woke up at 2am, Trey Cobb was there helping out, unbelievable. Super nice guys, very nice shops, lots of engineers and computers going on, they really know what they're doing. And i saw the carbon car!

Also thanks to:
TopSpeed - Doug built a car that could've won. You'll see it at some events in the near future - dominating.
Ultimate Racing - turbo kit ftw.
Rota - rock solid wheels, as always.
Robert Zafaras - he bought my old STi and wanted to pay our entry fee this year. if you need any land development work in Pittsburg, look him up. Thanks Bob.
Racing Brake - 6 piston kit ftw.
Bill @ SoJax
while we talk a lot of smack on the boards, the GSC, SOG, Boxer4Racing guys are all very laid back and groovy. we've all helped each other out along the way - which is part of One Lap.

edit: This is Doug, I just wanted to post something techincal since I am sure alot of people will ask. On our way from Mid-America we had our oddesy battery break a plate causing an over charge condition. This cause the large ground wire from the battery to melt, we never caught this problem before going out with the new battery at Miller. At miller the car was breaking up not plugs but the car was physically turning off. Luke made it two laps before the car stated to smoke. During the first two laps we were actually 3 seconds faster than the DaVia porsche and only .5 seconds behind the Hennesey Viper. A very Huge thanks to COBB, they went above and beyond to help us get the car back on the road. When the motor was ot we found that the number 1 cylinder's skirt had broken. At around 3:30am we were done with the shortblock swap and began out drive to pueblo. Arriving at pueblo to a huge crowd of clapping onelaps we started feeling better about our decision. After unloading the car and putting some racegas into it I went out for some road tuning. This is were things got screwy again, the car was not runing or reacting how it should. But would run very inconsitant almost like we had a huge grounding issue or the ecu twas TKO'd. At this point we threw in the towel, not wanting to risk anything and still being able to drive the car back to south bend. Only thing I can assume is when the oddesy battery went it took out more than just the large ground. We will get the car back to the shop and figure out what happend. Expect to see up around as we will be running some of the east coast time attacks.

Like the saying goes "see you next year"

Doug

The car looks great! Seen it a few times the past month....wonder how it would be with body colored flares?

Scott and I are currently in 9th place overall and tied for first in class.

Hopefully we can move up on the dry skid pad. We are only a couple of points out of 7th so we will see.

Congrats to Doug with the "1LAPSRT" SRT-4 for the number 1 spot in the same class and fifth overall. Some of yall might know him or seen him. He drives the black SRT-4 all One Lap stickered up that comes to Atlanta Dragway during the Friday night test and tunes. It sucked that TopSpeed and Lake Effect Racing had problems.

Yeah Doug is a great guy and a heck of a driver. They were very consistent and had very few problems. I'm doing a write up right now. I expect us to go top 5 next year.
