1.) Bob Stinson (Replacements)

2.) Billy Zoom (X)

3.) Fletcher (Pennywise)

4.) Keith Richards (Stones)

5.) Neil Young

My choices are about my musical taste rather than their musical ability. Stinson put down some decent tracks in the studio but live he was hit or miss. None of these guys are very technical, but they really sell their lines despite their simplicity. I can't get into Van Halen, Vai, Satriani, or any of those other guys. Its all about the technical and there really isn't any soul to it at all. Its just some wanker saying "look what I can do"

wow, you forgot every good metal guitarist. ie, alexi laiho, jeff loomis, andre olbrich, etc.

i'm a fan of metal myself
but because what you hear is fast does not mean it is the most skillful.

some of the most technical things in guitar aren't raging in an ampitheater distorted. When you are playing on distortion and fast like that, playing live gives you a lot more opportunities to mess up and most of the time have the mistake go unnoticed.

When you are playing some slower jams as a guitarist, by yourself for instance, with a more technical song... that requires huge amounts of skill and focus

canadianrcis
04-22-2007, 03:51 PM
while that is true about death and some power metal, have you ever listened to blind guardian and see andre olbrich's skill? not distorted, or played fast that much.

My favorite guitarist is Alex Lifeson, followed by Buckethead at #2.

As far as the BEST....who knows...who cares. It's 100% subjective.

But I'll say this much: I once saw Fredrik Thordendal (lead guitarist of Meshuggah) do a badass solo while running around in a circle. I don't know any other guitarist that does that.

Maybe you should switch over to country music or rap for a while, because something's seriously clouding your judgement.

most of you are to young and go straight for heavy metal. and don't listen for real music. most of the guys ya'll listed play 6 string compared to stevie who plays the 12 string.

SRV played a 6 string guitar tuned down to Eb :police:

What you are thinking of is the string gauge he played. He used a set that ranged from a low E at .058 to .012 at the high E. So when a lot of people say he "played 12 strings" they are talking about the gauge of the strings. Which is a pretty amazing feat in and of itself because all those prog-metal guys like Satriani and Vai are using .008's and .009's :goodjob:

I agree about Keith Richards making the guitar suit him. If you look at the tab for "Wild Horses", there are about 6 different guitar tracks with 6 different tunings used. He is most famous for the "open G" tuning that uses only 5 strings, eleminating the high E.

I'm also amazed nobody mentioned Jack White.

And there hasn't been a single country player mentioned either. Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Richard Bennett, James Burton, Duane Eddy, etc.

I play!

I do appriciate all types of guitar players and their different types of music. I like John5 (who plays metal), however, he started out playing blues and country. I have seen him live a few times and everytime I do, I am more and more impressed. Knowing how hard it was for me to learn to play, I respect anyone who can pick up a guitar and play any tune.

Edited to give an agreement to Jack White.

Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughn should be topping this list without any competition. Eric Clapton is good, but Stevie is definitely better in terms of actual skill. Jimmy Page...well, Jimmy speaks for himself. :)

Eddie Van Halen is good, but by far not the best. Angus is fun as hell to watch and he'll beat on a guitar but, if you take away his showmanship, you'll see that he's really not all that.

oh what the fuck ever, you heard one guitar solo, you heard them all. youve prolly never even seen kirk hammet live to really see him play, i have 4 times.

I've been playing bass/guitar/drums for the last 13 years. I've seen Kirk Hammet live. I've also seen Joe Satriani, Alex Lifeson, Fredrik Thordendal, Buckethead, Marty Friedman, and about a thousand other badass guitarists. I can honestly say that Kirk Hammet blows. I have been (and currently am) in bands with better guitarists than him. The dude just isn't that great. I think his solos are boring. They don't have much emotion, and the certainly aren't technically difficult. They're average. ESPECIALLY the garbage he's been writing since ...and Justice For All. Straight up poop.

What music have you put out? How many fans do you have and Im pretty sure his bank account will always be greater than yours. Kirk is not the greatest but Metallica has to be one of the top grossing bands.

exactly my point, what have you proven?

specvscott: you are nothing special ive been playing percussion for 14 years now and ive been in bands that have played places and all that crap. I would pay to see you stand in front of me and play the solos and shit that kirk plays verbatum, cause my money is that you cannot. Yes there are other bad ass guitarist but when you get to the level they are and the amount of time they have been doing it, they are all the same but just do different shit at different times. Both of you completely missed my point. I wasn't saying my ABILITY was anything special. I was just stating my background, to satisfy the previous poster that had mentioned how he thought none of us were musicians and had any idea of what we were talking about.

I'm first and foremost a bassist, so you're right...right now I couldn't stand in front of you and play every Kirk Hammet solo. However, if I so desired, I could sit down and learn a majority of them in a couple of hours. I CAN play you most of Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), which I learned after only having played the bass for six months. But that's besides the point.

My original point was that this whole argument is retarded, because there is no objective way to determine the greatest player. Album sales don't mean shit. Plenty of no-talent hacks sell millions of records. Highest notes-per-minute don't matter either.

What matters is what songs inspire the most in you. When you hear a solo and it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, or it reminds you of some great time in your life....THAT'S what makes it good.

"Black Magic Woman," a song normally associated with Carlos Santana, was originally written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac in 1968, 2 years before Santana's ABRAXAS album. This was back when Fleetwood Mac were a hard rockin' blues band. When Peter Green left they stopped making rock music and started making dousche. Hows that for influential :goodjob:

Another thing most people don't know is that "Layla," the song most often associated with Eric Clapton, is actually a duel between Clapton and Duane Allman. Some of the solos are Clapton's, some are Allman's. The really high notes you hear as a lead over the main riff are Allman pulling his slide past the end of the fretboard. Also theslide guitar over the piano coda at the end is textbook Duane Allman

Lifeson doesn't belong in this poll. And Chet Atkins does (and lots of others). Technical ability is not everything - you also have to have passion, and be able to connect w/ the instrument... and just plain ROCK. Satriani has amazing touch and is retarded technical - but he can't swing - he sounds "Berkley" and sounds programmed - predicatable - he doesn't have the "stuff" that you can't teach like say Jimi or SRV. AWESOME thread idea though. Clapton in all his greatness is MUCH underrated even today. And a young gun to watch out for is Berkley dropout John Mayer.

They are all talented guitarists. I'm a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan so I'd go with him.

But I've also heard that Brad Paisley is a killer guitarist who I think is pretty good on Banjo. Not sure about the Banjo. And I've heard the same about John Mayer.

In general your truly best guitarists are the studio guitarists that you never hear of. And I love Flemenca guitarists too.

who didnt vote for their fav. guitarist? NOBODY. you cant determine who is the "best" because that is completely opinion-based and subjective.

plus, you only listed either REALLY mega-famous guitarists or shredders. theres SOOOOO many genres of guitar music. what if somebody thinks the guitarisit from mcr are some of the best? they are pretty good. or even fall out boy. for their type of music, they are probably the best.

the solo is VERY overrated. notes per minute only proves how much free time you have and how badly you need a girlfriend. if you cant connect with the instrument and the audience you are worthless as a guitarist.

When you do - get there early and watch him warm-up. After seeing him warm-up in Denver for 20 minutes I could have left... I had my money's worth. JM can burn the guitar down to the GROUND - PERIOD. He's a level 25 guitar player who records music at level 10 bc he's on cruise control.

The best thing he did for his playing was drop out of Berkley. He's a young gun to watch for sure.

ENough said.

No offense, but musicians hear very different things than non-musicians when we listen to music. We hear and feel things that the average listener doesn't.

It's like when people tell me my cars are quick - LOL. I know RIGHT AWAY that they are admiring performance cars through the eyes of some1 that really doesn't know performance cars. LOL. I nod and say thanx, but in the back of my mind I ignore them bc they simply arent versed enough to know what a "quick' car is. The musicians that MUSICIANS go to see is very diff than the musicians that non-musicians go to see. Doesn't mean that you're a dummy - it just means we have a different ear than others. Carry on.

Carry on.

Well said. I can't stand to hear someone say how great a guitat player is cause he plays blindingly fast. I'm gonna name my list of greatest and most non musicians wont even know half of them. Robert Cray, Hubert Sumlin, SRV, Buddy Guy, B. B. King, Dan Tyminski, Vince Gill, J. J. Cale, Brent Mason (probably the best next to SVR), Joe Satriani.

I am guessing you are referring to the likes of Malmsteen... I can't stand to hear people say that is all he plays, or can play. It's what he is known for, but he plays many different styles, and can do just about anything on a guitar... But I am guessing you have never seen him live, nor cared to look into his music much.

Hahahahaha. Do you even know who Malmsteen is? Honestly? He is one of the most influential guitar player in history you fuck. He has been playing for 40 years... Go to youtube, listen to his solo call Black Star. It's not his best or anything, and not anything too special, except for the fact that he wrote it when he was 9 years old. Trust me. John's guitar parts are for the most part very technical and hard to play. I've tried. Yngwie's stuff is less technical. Still hard to play cause a lot of it is fast as hell. Two totally different kinds of artists though.

I dont think you can say who's best at guitar but merely respect each man for what they bring to the table. And I say this as a musician with 15 years of experience playing brass instruments, 5 fucking around on guitars. Some guys are good at making ridiculously composed songs, like Tool and Rush, while others could improv for 4 hours straight without repeating a lick.

Bob Stinson from the Replacements was mentioned early on, he could have been great if he hadnt died so young. There's a legend that Paul Westerberg recruited him to the band after hearing him nail Texas Flood note for note when the guys were only in high school. Chalk up another loss to drugs/alcohol and the rock and roll lifestyle.

Chris Cheney from the Living End hasnt been mentioned, though he is the best guitar player in Australia. They actually have a competition once a year and he's won it 3 times in the last 5 years. He's one of those guys that doesnt play 100% on the records because your average listener doesnt want to hear nonstop guitar wankery.

Alexi Laiho owns at metal
BB King is probably the most influential blues guitar player ever
Clapton rocked at turning blues into modern rock
John Mayer is carrying this legacy on

Tom Morello shouldnt even be on the list since we're talking about guitar players, not distortion pedal players. He's good at innovating new sounds and techniques but not too technical of a player :screwy:

And to the guys who credit Pennywise's guitar players, have yall heard Strung Out? Much tighter guitars.

But my vote for the best ever would be Jeff Beck. This man continues to push the limits on what is capable with an electric guitar and rock music in general. Who needs guitar picks, Beck sure doesnt.

MachNU
12-31-2009, 09:06 PM
Still living my vote goes to Steve Vai. He is one fucking hell of a quitariest and its music you can sit and listen to. But the best of all time, was Jimi. Granted he was not able to stay around long enough to clinche that title, but I believe had he not died he would have produced some of the greatest rifts ever.

MachNU
12-31-2009, 09:10 PM
But what also makes this a question that could never be answered is the fact that you have the greatest from each genre, and then you have those who are pickers, sliders, etc.
