View Full Version : Does the M44B19 have any potential

I'm looking at getting a 1995 318is and I guess this is the engine in it. So my question is will this engine perform being an I4 and all? Is there any aftermarket parts available for this engine? If I was to swap it later on what would be a good engine? I was thinking the M52 but I'm not sure. The car has 151,822 miles and a manual transmission.

All input is appreciated.

to be honest, what ever you do to that motor short of F.I., it will be a complete dog! if you do a swap, do an S50/S52 swap

What would be the best setup for forced induction?

Na, they don't really have a lot of potential. You'd have to go with a supercharger or turbo to get any power out of it, and the power you'll be making will be about the same as a lightly modded 325/328. 150k on that motor is nothing, so it still has a lot of life. My recommendation is to either hold out for a 325/328 with a manual, or if you do buy the 318, definitely do a motor swap. You could swap to an M50/M52, or if you wanted a bit more power, swap to an S50/S52.

I don't want a 4cyl.

I appreciate all of your replies and they help me decide to look for a 325is or 328is. Lastly which 3 series BMW is the closest to the M3?

Ive got a 328i, love every bit of it. The tranny is the same as the M3 :boobies: from the factory. But yeah a modded 328 can take a stock M. I blew my 328 motor before i got that chance. Now i can nearly stick with a E46 M.

Like 328ijunkie already said, a 328 is the closest you're gonna get to an M3. A modded one can come damn close to to an M3.

so that 214 HP e30 M3 that was made in the early 90s was a peice of junk?

you could find a M42 and use its forged rods and crank, and get a set of pistons and then put boost to it.

there's a supercharger kit for the 318 that gets pretty good reviews

Someone needs to research his BMW history. What Honda 4 banger has made 240 crank hp from the factory and had a reputation to last for 300k + track beating miles and have enough grunt to run a 2800lbs E30 to 160mph?

Downing Atlanta makes a good supercharger for the 1.8's and 9's. Hah I should know.. I work there. It should bring you to about 215 crank hp and I will let you know that the tuning Downing did on their blowers was crap. With a different pully, alcohol injection and a good tune you could expect more like 200-220whp. The kits are 3200 + another 500 for tuning, pulley etc. A tad bit less then a good S52 and tranny....

better yet

the 2002's m10 engine, 4cyl production USED! blocks that made 1500 + Hp and were used in F1 cars

they used production blocks that had street miles on them already, they wanted conditioned engines

YES! I originally mentioned the M10 in my original post but cut it out because I didn't want to blab on and on and sound like a prick. The M10's are simply amazing. Theirs a guy running stock internals on his E30 M10 turbo running low 11's in the 1/4 mile on bimmerforums

That I would have to disagree with you on. I have driven 1 and ridden in another downing atlanta car. One was a z3 and the other was a 318. Both feeled slower than a stock e36 328.

Bolt on DASC's suck without some modification...you're right.

.... I looked into it some and my numbers were off slightly, more like 180-210 whp on stock interals my bad.

Anyway to O.P...they have some potential a Bf.c member has a nicely tuned Z3 1.9 with pully, tune, alcohol etc. and it was really light and relatively quick. My advice is buy an S52 unless you want to be different.

Here's a BF.C member making about 240whp on a stock M44.

Buy it and swap in an SR20 with a big turbo. Has anybody ever done an LS1 swap in a 3-series chassis? They would each cost barely more than any of those BMW motor swaps and have much more potential.

The most common LSx swap into a euro car would def. be an E36 or E30. There's so many done that there are kits and places to buy everything you need for the conversion. I've thought about it myself considering it keeps the weight distribution, but I can make much more power and cheaper by just going turbo. Check the engine conversion section of bimmerforums.com if your interested. There's a few on there and I know there
s a stroked 6.6L LS2 swap in one of them with video's. Or just type in LS whatever BMW in youtube.
