View Full Version : Diesel fuel in my Yaris...
Went to fill up yesterday morning and some jack@ss had crossed the 87 octane pump and the diesel pump. Being in a hurry, I didn't even check to see where the hoses were running and thus, pumped about a gallon and a half of diesel in my car before realizing what I was doing. Yeah, I feel dumb so don't start.
So here's my dilemma. My gastank holds a little over 10 gallons. After pumping in a gallon and half of diesel, I quickly swapped over and proceeded to fill the rest of the tank with 93 octane premium fuel. Will this dilute(sp?) the fuel enough so that it doesn't cause any serious problems? The car has already stuttered a bit on the road and when taking off in first gear. No smoke yet, so I'm hoping that's a good thing. Anyone got any advice other than changing the fuel filter here in a little bit? I'm already going to do that. Thanks.

I would drain the tank, a few dollars of fuel is not worth damaging anything on that car

IT will be alright but I would run it out! but you would be in trouble if it was the other way around gas in a diesel FTL

Say goodbye to your cat and possibly your O2 sensors.
How do you not notice that you are grabbing a diesel pump?

In America the diesel filler nozzle won't fit in a gasoline hole...

x3. That's what I thought.
Are you sure it was diesel?

Are you sure it was diesel?Kerosene FTW!!! Guaranteed to have the cleanest fuel line in Atlanta, hahaha.
j/k, those are normally completely seperate pumps
why did u start the car and continue driving? i wouldnt risk running diesel in my car.I had to be somewhere important. I called some other car buddies and they said to dilute it as much as possible. It's running okay right now, just a little hesistant. Hopefully it'll run itself through for a bit and then I'll swap the fuel filter.

i would run some fuel injector cleaner too

Why risk anything happening? Drain it. Get a 2 gallon tank fuel of fuel to put in it afterwards, and then fill it up.
It seems reasonable to me. But I may be overlooking something, so that may not be a good idea.

at most gas stations diesel pump is bigger in diameter and wont actually fit in a regular car, sometimes it hardly fits in our diesel you have to hold it there

But the fuel nozzle itself is usually green! Stupid!

My dad did this same thing at the chevron years ago. the diesel pump was built in next to the regular stuff and he filled the whole tank full of it. The dealer charged 400+ to clean the entire fuel system.

isnt fuel injector cleaner almost deisel ..smells like it.....
But the fuel nozzle itself is usually green! Stupid!Yeah...I know this now.
Anywho, the car seems to be running fine now. A little sluggish as expected, but no engine codes or sputtering. I'll keep putting premium in for the next couple of tanks just to be sure.

just put some water in there to rinse out the diesel...

i heard sugar will help with that also...:goodjob:
Actually, I just threw a penny in there. I hear the copper counteracts the effects of diesel.

ummmm, good chance of killing O2 sensors and converter. But it shouldnt mess anything else up, maybe foul the plugs. With that little diesel in there, i'd let it get to like 1/2 talk and fill it back up. The worst thing you could have done is put 93 in there. Octane rating has NOTHING i repeat NOTHING to do with "diluting" diesel. If anything, you just made it worse.
See, you have to understand how fuel works, which Nate, apparently you don't, so here's your crash course.:
Octane rating refers to how quickly the fuel ignites- the lower the rating, the faster it ignites. A higher octane means it takes more direct heat (ie- spark) to ignite the fuel. That's why you use 93 in high compression and boosted cars, because the heat of the intake and compression CAN pre-ignite the fuel (ping, knock etc...) Now, since diesel engines don't have spark plugs, the diesel doesn't use a ignition source. The diesel basically works off detonation. They have very high compression ratios that compress so much, the diesel self ignites and makes combustion. Now mixing a substance that takes a LOT of heat to ignite and mixing it with a gasoline that has a higher threshold before ignition is going to be your problem. If you would have filled up with 87, you'd pretty much not have anything to worry about. But with that 93 you are going to feel the car running like ass.

He speaks the truth. I would change the plugs and the fuel filter. But I think you may have took a few miles off the life of that engine. It may have gummed up the valves in it a little. I am also pretty sure that diesel has some sort of solvent in it in the u.s. Like a soap kind of sort of that keeps the fuel system clean. I would just do what I said then pray for the best. thats my 2cents.

Yeah, I already planned on swapping the plugs and fuel filter. I'll run a few bottles of cleaner through it later on too.
Jeez Ran you are sucha noob. You still moving to Japan? If so can you overnight me parts?
1) Yes, still going to Japan.
2) You drive a VW. Why do you need parts from Japan? :lmao:
3) Car is running fine right now. :)

Seriously, it's running about the same as it used too right now. The Yaris can pretty much run on horse piss so I guess that helps.
