I am considering whether or not I should have a swap done to my 97 civic. I want to be able to pass emmissions, but also be able to run a b series engine with some mods. Could someone give me some helpful suggestions as to how to have this done?

with a b-series engine... yes you will be able to pass emmisions... even with some mods! you sould go ahead and put a GSR engine. that what everybody puts now days! if u wanna be a little more ahead... u could put a b20 engine and change the GSR head! your move! depends on the money u got!

if i were to go with a gsr, or maybe a b16, would i need a new wiring harness for the car?

yes... you would need basicly everything!
Engine, tranny, axles, ECU, wiring harness, motor mounts, some sensors, and other random stuff! it`s really a pain in the ass to go from d-series to b-series! but after u do it... u will be happy :D lol

As far as B-series gom GSR if youve got the money, B16 if you have a liiiittle bit less and dont mind 111lbs of torque. There are alot of options though... many swear by B18Bs, B20s, and LS/VTEC.
oh, and your swap wont HAVE to come from an OBD2 donor, but it will be ALOT easier, trust me. its always a good rule of thumb to swap OBD1s to OBD1s and OBD2s to OBD2s.
