Ok before anyone wants to jump down my throat for this post, please read and re-read what i post.

Ok whats your thoughts on Black History Month?

Personally I feel that it should be done away with, there shouldnt be one. Ok Ok here me out on this. I feel that Black History=White History=Asian History=Hispanic History=Indian History=etc... so why the color barrier on remembering a certain races history? I feel that it does no good, only makes the color barrier bigger. I mean there is no other history months for people of other races.

History is history, it is color blind. So why only recognize one race for their history?

I feel this only puts civil rights at a further disadvantage for success

i agree

I think its better to learn from the past but not live in it, its only seperating whites from blacks even more and acknowledging it.

if there's gonna be a month for something it should be world history month, as cheesy as that sounds. but something that acknowledges us together as one people's history rather then segregating like we did 40 years ago.

thats my 2 cents

History is history, it is color blind.

Our history (U.S. and world) is littered with religious and racially motivated actions. How can it be color blind? You have to understand the entire scope of history.

We learn bits and pieces of what our public school systems require. Those "educators" tend to omit minorities from American history. We didn't just appear after the the Civil War.

maybe in kindergarten when you learn about pilgrims and native americans sitting down being one big peaceful family lol

any more advanced class gives you a multi faceted perception

It's tangible history if the information is made available to us. Are you telling me that you learned about Asian and Latino influences on American history when you were in grades k-12? The information is limited and needs to be supplemented. One of the reasons I stand behind a college education.

*Note: Yes, I know the topic is about BHM, but it should encompass all minorities, including women. BTW, BHM is also intended for young Black Americans who have forgotten where they've come from and where they are going.

you're twisting my whole purpose around buddy

i dont mean HISTORY that we are taught i mean THE ACTUAL HISTORY (aka what happened in the past) you obviously have some gripe with the state school system, thats neither here nor there in this thread.

if you want to vent about that then make a thread. this is about how there should/should not be seperate ethnic history months

*Note: Yes, I know the topic is about BHM, but it should encompass all minorities, including women. BTW, BHM is also intended for young Black Americans who have forgotten where they've come from and where they are going.
it basically does encompass all minority's hence the point of me making this thread.

You need to learn how to relay your question properly. This is not the first time we've had this problem.

You propose that BHM be eliminated, but that is irresponsible when the current K-12 curriculum creates a distorted view of American history. How hard is that to understand?

if you think its irresponsible to eliminate it then where's every other ethnic history month?

It's what they are NOT learning in school. I suspect that is one of the reasons BHM exists.

You're asking the wrong person. Part of my learning process came from my parents. During my undergrad years I took filler history classes and researched as much as I could.

BHM is a necessary evil to force-feed Americans. Is it fair to other minority groups? Of course not. Just remember the post I made about the median income based on race. :lmfao: Hope it all makes sense.

if we had to make a month for every ethnic group, there would not be enough months in the year so its always gonna be unfair.

and secondly, i'm in AP US History right now and we're actually learning right now about immigration to the United States from East And Southern Europe in the late 19th Century and about failed African American movements by Debois and Washington

what were you saying about schools not teaching it :???:

Black history month was started back when blacks were treated less than human. Carter G. Woodson started Black history month in 1926, and he did it to show Blacks/Whites (mainly Black youths) what accomplishments blacks had made here in America. For many years it was only celebrated by blacks, it has only become widely celebrated in the last 20-30 years. The month doesn't preach hate for another race and it doesn’t show the supremacy of one race.

I honestly don't see the problem with the month. The month affects no one and everybody I know that actually pays attention to the month; usually learn something new (including me). I would like to know more about other races too and I don't see a problem with Asian, Spanish, White history month. Its just that you white ppl take shit too far when it involves race. If you guys could do without the cross burning and going on coon hunts, I don't see a problem with a month showing the accomplishment of whites. If you don't like Black history month, then go into a comma during Black history month

point being in a high school class i am learning about exactly what someone earlier was griping about kids didn't know, meaning we needed a black history month to educate people.

I am the one crying??? My god I find it hilarious how people get so concerned over small matters that doesn’t even affect that person. I do think schools and some business take it too far sometimes when it comes to recognizing black history month. Please tell me how exactly how it affects you directly and promotes inequality? The most I hear from people who don’t agree on BHm, is that they just have a problem with the name of the month. Which is also the same reason why ppl get pissed about BET and when fubu was popular (finally once ppl caught on to the name).

theres not a holiday for every presidents birthday, presidents day is on Washingtons birthday (i believe) my assumption as to that would be because he is the first presidnt of the US. so they deicded to remember all presidents on his bday.

And exactly how the fuck does black history month split balcks and whites more?
i believe the month was created to bring awareness about black history, right? but as i said in my first post black=white=asian=hispanic=etc.. history.

i think that cialis made a good point in this thread that the school curriculum needs a major overhaul to bring more minority history into the classroom

This country is still very racist, including the blacks. Blacks get away with the majority of the racial problems this country faces. Black history month is one of those things not to mention BET(Black Entertainment Television). Both of which if any other race had an equavalent they would be considered racist by the masses.

Blacks also fight for the supposedly "politically correct" alternative to 'blacks' : "african-americans". This so-called politically correct term is racist in nature, im white, and the majority of whites are ok with being called white. Personally, when i look in the mirror, on the most simplist terms of colors my skin is white. Blacks on the other hand get uneasy when refered to as blacks. Why? I have no idea, all i know is there are plenty of people that fight for this "politically correct" term. I have a little bit of irish in my bloodline, but am i called an Irish-American, nope; neither do i want to be called that. There is only one type of american in my opinion and thats the good ol fashioned plain "american" NOT: irish-american, african-american, turkish-american, or any other word you could make up. I just dont understand why a race that is supposedly anti-segregation chooses to segregate themselfs with "politically correct" termanology.

We also have blatantly racist people in atlanta, that have influence over the population, two of which is the mayor of atlanta, and jesse jackson. yet they continue to do so with great support. You dont see the KKK on FOX News at night, but you see Jesse Jackson on there saying Katrina was a racist act on the goverments behalf.

All in all, this country needs to get over race, and worry about things that truly matter. And back on topic, yes : Black history month should be done away with asap.

Be in their shoes and talk that dumb shit. My parents were born in the early 40s ad they went through some of the stuff my grandparents went through but not all the way to the same level, but it was close. Tell them that they are racsit for what happened to them, and you might not see another day. Black history is to show what struggles some blacks have been trough an what they have accomplished, So its not a national hoilday. Its something to give people inspiration for accomplishments.

Sounds like you have a problem with the word black. If there was no upn or Bet u wouldn't never see Black person on TV except for sports. I call that racist that there are few shows on network tv that appeal to other races other than white. The real sad thing is that the few blacks shows that are on tv play into the Black stereotype.

you see Jesse Jackson on there saying Katrina was a racist act on the goverments behalf.
I do agree that Jesse Jackson cries woof to many times, but I do see (also a lot of black) where he is coming from to a certain degree on the Katrina matter. Katrina just showed the entire country how blacks still don't trust white ppl and the gov't. Katrina was a disaster, that I feel that would still turn out shitty if it where white ppl that were stuck in New Orleans. But I still have that feeling that more heads would have rolled if majority of those people where white that were stuck in New Orleans. I have that kind of thought process, b/c as a kid I heard the true stories of what blacks and also what family members had to endure in this country. I am not talking about the 50’s; I am talking about as early as the med 90’s

All in all, this country needs to get over race, and worry about things that truly matter. And back on topic, yes : Black history month should be done away with asap.
As a country we still have a long way to go

First, to answer the question. I think the month should be abolished. Just as I think Hallmark created a ton of bogus reasons for us to celebrate all the worthless holidays they have tried to invent. History cannot be changed although there are many people of many races and religions that are probably embarassed for actions of all sorts from previous generations. Yes, I have white skin but how many folks realize that history in Rome suggests that most of the people (which happened to have white skin) were homosexuals. All of us might have heritage that puts our family tree square in the middle of dick suckers of the world during that time. Who knows. Rome fell. Did it fall because of skin color? Did it fall because of all the dick suckers? Who cares. It takes all kinds of people to co-exist in today's world. Yes, I'm a little older than a lot of folks on IA but I respect everyone as to their right to be a human being. It's very easy to generalize about things when a common identifying characteristic exist. The whole black/white or male/female arguments are a big waste of time. Everyday I depend on good people of many different backgrounds as most everyone else does too. The sooner we all decide to quit rehashing history and begin to plan the future, the better we all will be. Personally, I always felt that history in school was a big waste of time. Would it not have been better to spend the time on something that would prepare us to make a living rather than sleeping through a history course. Think about this, if history wasn't offerred as a course in school, what would history teachers do to earn a living? Answer: They would starve since they offer nothing of importance to any of us. Just my two cents. However, if we have to hate on something, couldn't we all agree that Hondas suck? Thank you.

Wouldn't it make more sense to judge people based on their character as opposed to their sex, race, or religion?

o really, ..... accomplishments.

trust me man. This country is racist. White people included. If i came across as blacks being racist, and them alone I appoligize.

Where is native-american history month? can you answer that, cause the whites basically slaughtered them, yet they dont get a month.

I just think we focus a little too much on our history, to the point that it hurts us. In no way, shape, or form should we forget about what has happened in the past. But in no way do we need a month about a race, its just not fair to other races, PERIOD. Now where do you draw the line in determining which races get a month? That would be a racist decision wouldnt it?

Danny

Sounds like you have a problem with the word black. If there was no upn or Bet u wouldn't never see Black person on TV except for sports. I call that racist that there are few shows on network tv that appeal to other races other than white. The real sad thing is that the few blacks shows that are on tv play into the Black stereotype.

I expected this response. But your missing the point, the racist action is in the NAME. It suggests that only Blacks can watch. You arguing that other channels consist mostly of whites, is true, but an invalided argument, and has nothing to do with my argument. Feel free to start a network with the majority of the on air talent being black, that’s fine. But the second you call it BLACK Entertainment, that’s racist. This would pertain to any race.

I do agree that Jesse Jackson cries woof to many times, but I do see (also a lot of black) where he is coming from to a certain degree on the Katrina matter. Maybe your right. But that accusation needs proof, people of this country cant call a disaster like that to be a racial matter with out significant proof. Personally i dont think it was a racial matter in regards to the delayed response.

As a country we still have a long way to go

a very long way to go. I would love if we could all drop the racial issues, but its just not going to happen.

Look yall have holidays all year long, I could give a fuck less about a presidents birthday. All so if their had been a black president I doubt their would be a hoilday for that. And exactly how the fuck does black history month split balcks and whites more?

the ignorance just reaks from your post
since when was it a specific presidents holiday. its just PRESIDENTS DAY not gwb day or clinton presidents day, so if there ever was a black president it would still be his holiday.... the issue with BHM is that its a specific holiday for a specific race....

I can't believe I just sat here and read all of this, but here's my question...

What is it that bothers white people about BHM? Does it take something away from you? Does it offend you? Do you not feel included? I read the replies, that I don't agree with, about it further dividing the races but I just don't understand why threads like this are needed. Can we [Blacks] not have something to ourselves for just 28 days out of the year? I mean come on, what changes? A few more commercials here and there, maybe a few more signs and billboards? Where's the harm in that?

Someone please explain it to me because I have failed to see the harm.

Btw, I love BET. :D

first question is, wasnt bhm started to raise awareness about black cultures and equality?

well how equal is it to have your own month? (personally i dont give a flying fuck about a WHM) my whole point is that BHM is segregating Blacks from everyone else. i feel (call my crazy i guess) that history is not restricted to one race, we are all humans first, races second. so why do we need to classify things based on race?

i agree

its not racist to not give you your own month. it only seperates black people even further, we should just treat eachother equally and make awareness for slavery and issues of black civil rights in the past, but a month is not necessary for that.

some black people will say that its the least we could do for enslaving them over a hundred years ago. WHICH WAS COMPLETELY UNETHICAL AND BEYOND IMMORAL AND WRONG... but they fail to see that even if you can argue that your present conditions are because of slavery and you want reperations... that was caused by people long dead.

racism still goes on, on both sides of the fence. but we should just get on with things and treat eachother equally, make sure people are aware of the past so they don't make the same mistakes, but don't make a whole seperate month to only divide us into different groups even more so

P.S. - i could care less about a WHM as well, i wouldn't want one either

Kamikaze

It's not like we bought the rights to the month of February. We don't own it so it doesn't really belong to us. It's just a designated time that is used to celebrate our culture.

I don't know if I agree with you completely there. For example, some inventions or ideas were first created or developed by a particular race. To be able to say, "Hey we did this first." is kind of a way to be proud of your heritage. You know what I'm sayin?

You misinterpreted what I was saying. Of course a race can't invent something as there are people being born into it constantly. But when something great is discovered or created that has an immense impact on human history, is the origin of the creator not attached to it?

And I don't know why race matters. I don't make the rules.

Discuss

Exactly, SOME poeple only want you to be color blind when it suits their purpose
